Three terrorists killed in J&K gunfight
Srinagar: Three terrorists were killed on Tuesday in a gunfight with the joint forces in Keller area of Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district.
V. K. Birdi, IGP (Kashmir), told reporters that three terrorists have been killed.
"Terrorists are yet to be identified, and a search operation is still going on there," he said.
Joint forces had launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in the Shukroo Keller area of Shopian district after intelligence inputs said that a group of terrorists was hiding there.
When challenged, the terrorists fired, after which an encounter started during which three terrorists were killed. The operation is continuing in the area, police said.
As per sources, two to three terrorists were believed to be trapped in the area.
The Indian Army, in a statement, said that based on specific intelligence about the presence of terrorists in Shoekal Keller, a search and destroy Operation was launched.
During the operation, terrorists opened heavy fire, and fierce firefight ensued, which resulted in the elimination of three hardcore terrorists, it added.
"Operation is in progress," the Indian Army said.
This is the second terrorist act in Jammu and Kashmir after the ceasefire understanding between Indian and Pakistan on May 11.
On the same evening, suspected terrorists fired at and injured a guard at the gate of the Army's Nagrota Corps headquarters.
One soldier was injured in the terrorist firing, after which the terrorists escaped.
Security forces continue to remain on alert across Jammu and Kashmir as the Pakistan Army had violated the ceasefire understanding on Saturday, even after the two countries announced cessation of all hostilities on land, air and sea.
Police have advised hundreds of residents of border areas along the LoC and the IB not to hurry back home for now, till the situation is fully calm.

London, Jun 14 (PTI) The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations concluded with India places the UK at a 'genuine" competitive advantage in the manufacturing sector, the House of Commons was told this week. During a debate on the bilateral FTA agreed last month, UK Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds fielded a series of questions on the advantages of the deal which has been pegged to increase bilateral trade by GBP 25.5 billion annually in the long term. Reynolds reiterated that the pact marked a huge economic win for the UK as the 'best deal that India has ever offered". 'On advanced manufacturing… a set of advantageous positions has been agreed, putting this country at a genuine competitive advantage, particularly in relation to sectors such as automotive and machinery," said Reynolds, in response to a question by British Sikh Labour MP for Smethwick, West Midlands, Gurinder Singh Josan. 'India is traditionally a very protectionist economy, and it is the world's fastest growing big economy. Whether it is for goods or services… or the West Midlands as a whole, there is so much good stuff here to celebrate," added the minister. The debate this week comes ahead of UK-India Week, which begins next week as part of the annual India Global Forum (IGF) summit in London. The India-UK FTA is set to dominate the agenda, with Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal among the speakers expected to address the forum. It will also mark the launch of the 2025 edition of the 'India Meets Britain Tracker', which analyses the investment flows by Indian companies into the UK. Baby calls for detoxification of society from fascist ideals propagated by RSS
Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] general secretary M.A. Baby has observed that while politically defeating the fascist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)-controlled Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is important, even more important is defeating their fake cultural nationalism project through which they are invading people's minds. He was speaking after releasing the Malayalam translation of the book, Being Muslim in Hindu India written by Ziya Us Salam, Associate Editor of The Hindu, here on Saturday (June 14, 2025). 'What is needed parallel to a political fight is a cultural fight by democratic and secular forces to detoxify people's minds of fascist ideals. Otherwise, even if the BJP is electorally defeated in the future, the RSS will continue to work in Indian society,' Mr. Baby said. 'The electoral setback suffered by the BJP in last year's general elections is a lesson that attempts by the Modi-led neo-fascist, majoritarian forces to set up a Hindu State with the backing of the corporate and the neo-rich can be effectively resisted by democratic and secular forces, if they so desire.
