Three terrorists killed in J&K gunfight
Srinagar: Three terrorists were killed on Tuesday in a gunfight with the joint forces in Keller area of Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district.
V. K. Birdi, IGP (Kashmir), told reporters that three terrorists have been killed.
"Terrorists are yet to be identified, and a search operation is still going on there," he said.
Joint forces had launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in the Shukroo Keller area of Shopian district after intelligence inputs said that a group of terrorists was hiding there.
When challenged, the terrorists fired, after which an encounter started during which three terrorists were killed. The operation is continuing in the area, police said.
As per sources, two to three terrorists were believed to be trapped in the area.
The Indian Army, in a statement, said that based on specific intelligence about the presence of terrorists in Shoekal Keller, a search and destroy Operation was launched.
During the operation, terrorists opened heavy fire, and fierce firefight ensued, which resulted in the elimination of three hardcore terrorists, it added.
"Operation is in progress," the Indian Army said.
This is the second terrorist act in Jammu and Kashmir after the ceasefire understanding between Indian and Pakistan on May 11.
On the same evening, suspected terrorists fired at and injured a guard at the gate of the Army's Nagrota Corps headquarters.
One soldier was injured in the terrorist firing, after which the terrorists escaped.
Security forces continue to remain on alert across Jammu and Kashmir as the Pakistan Army had violated the ceasefire understanding on Saturday, even after the two countries announced cessation of all hostilities on land, air and sea.
Police have advised hundreds of residents of border areas along the LoC and the IB not to hurry back home for now, till the situation is fully calm.

FTA with India brings ‘genuine' competitive advantage, UK Parliament told
London, Jun 14 (PTI) The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations concluded with India places the UK at a 'genuine" competitive advantage in the manufacturing sector, the House of Commons was told this week. During a debate on the bilateral FTA agreed last month, UK Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds fielded a series of questions on the advantages of the deal which has been pegged to increase bilateral trade by GBP 25.5 billion annually in the long term. Reynolds reiterated that the pact marked a huge economic win for the UK as the 'best deal that India has ever offered". 'On advanced manufacturing… a set of advantageous positions has been agreed, putting this country at a genuine competitive advantage, particularly in relation to sectors such as automotive and machinery," said Reynolds, in response to a question by British Sikh Labour MP for Smethwick, West Midlands, Gurinder Singh Josan. 'India is traditionally a very protectionist economy, and it is the world's fastest growing big economy. Whether it is for goods or services… or the West Midlands as a whole, there is so much good stuff here to celebrate," added the minister. The debate this week comes ahead of UK-India Week, which begins next week as part of the annual India Global Forum (IGF) summit in London. The India-UK FTA is set to dominate the agenda, with Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal among the speakers expected to address the forum. It will also mark the launch of the 2025 edition of the 'India Meets Britain Tracker', which analyses the investment flows by Indian companies into the UK. With the UK and India ranking as the sixth and fourth largest economies respectively, the Tracker offers insights into one of the world's most strategic investment corridors following last year's report setting a new record of 971 Indian-owned companies operating in the UK – a figure that has been consistently on an upward trajectory. 'Indian businesses are no longer just investing abroad – they are transforming global economies," said IGF founder Manoj Ladwa. According to the UK's Department for Business and Trade (DBT), the India-UK FTA slashes tariffs across the board and is set to increase UK GDP by GBP 4.8 billion and wages by GBP 2.2 billion each year over the next decade. Israel's Big Claims: Air Superiority From Western Iran To Tehran, Strikes On Nuclear Sites
Last Updated: The Israeli military said its military campaign in Iran had secured control of the airspace from Western Iran to Tehran as the two countries exchanged fire for a second day. The Israeli military said on Saturday that its military campaign in Iran had secured control of the airspace from Western Iran to Tehran, where 70 fighter jets carried out airstrikes overnight in one of the biggest direct attacks between the two sworn enemies. 'We have created aerial freedom of action from west Iran all the way to Tehran," said Israel Defence Forces (IDF) spokesperson Brigadier General Effie Defrin. 'Tehran is no longer immune, the capital is exposed to Israeli strikes," he added. Defrin said some 40 sites were targeted in Israel's offensive, including air defence systems and related assets. 'The dozens of aircraft are flying freely over Tehran, thanks to the opening blow that removed the threat of Iranian air defence systems," he added. The Israeli military launched a devastating offensive against Iran, targeting its nuclear and military infrastructure under Operation Rising Lion. The military killed most of Iran's military leadership and nuclear scientists involved in Tehran's controversial nuclear programme. The IDF said at least 20 top military Iranian commanders have been killed since Israel launched its operation against Iran on Friday, including Army Chief Mohammed Bagheri, who 'oversaw most of Iran's long-range surface-to-surface and cruise missile capabilities". The military also released a video of Israeli strikes, showing it dismantling some of Iran's most dangerous military assets, from nuclear sites to air defence systems. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israeli forces dealt 'serious damage" to Iran's nuclear programme and threatened to strike 'every target of the ayatollah regime" in Iran. He said the Israeli campaign delayed Iran's nuclear programme by several years. Iran-Israel Conflict Continues Meanwhile, Israel continued to strike several sites in Iran after Tehran launched hundreds of ballistic missiles at Tel Aviv overnight, leaving three people dead and 70 others injured. According to Iranian media, an Israeli strike on Saturday killed three members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in the country's northwest. A police chief and another officer were killed in a drone strike about 300 km from Tehran. (with agency inputs) First Published: June 14, 2025, 21:01 IST

Baby calls for detoxification of society from fascist ideals propagated by RSS
Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] general secretary M.A. Baby has observed that while politically defeating the fascist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)-controlled Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is important, even more important is defeating their fake cultural nationalism project through which they are invading people's minds. He was speaking after releasing the Malayalam translation of the book, Being Muslim in Hindu India written by Ziya Us Salam, Associate Editor of The Hindu, here on Saturday (June 14, 2025). 'What is needed parallel to a political fight is a cultural fight by democratic and secular forces to detoxify people's minds of fascist ideals. Otherwise, even if the BJP is electorally defeated in the future, the RSS will continue to work in Indian society,' Mr. Baby said. 'The electoral setback suffered by the BJP in last year's general elections is a lesson that attempts by the Modi-led neo-fascist, majoritarian forces to set up a Hindu State with the backing of the corporate and the neo-rich can be effectively resisted by democratic and secular forces, if they so desire. However, whether the political parties, which are supposed to learn lessons from that, are acting accordingly remains a question,' he said. Mr. Baby said that Modi, whose party lost its majority in the last general elections and now relies on two crutches — the Janata Dal (United) and the Telugu Desam Party — is trying to win back popular support by politically exploiting the post-Pahalgam scenario, just as he did before the 2019 general elections. He bemoaned the 'othering' based on religion and caste in the country, citing the denial of passage to Mr. Salam over a mere misspelling in his air ticket as an example. Mr. Salam was unable to attend the function. Senior journalist Siddharth Varadarajan and poet P.N. Gopikrishnan spoke at the seminar on 'In Defence of Secularism.' Trade union activist C.B. Venugopal translated the book, which was published by Samooh Books. Greater Cochin Development Authority Chairman K. Chandran Pillai presided. Critic M.K. Sanoo was present. Samooh president Joby John welcomed the gathering, and R. Minipriya, vice-president, delivered vote of thanks.
