Captain Shubman Gill regained his form after a hat-trick of low scores in the ongoing Test series against England, scoring a defiant half-century and forging a solid third-wicket partnership with opener KL Rahul to help India recover from a woeful start.
Gill was batting on 78 with Rahul on 87 as India reached 174/2 after 63 overs at close of play on Day 4 of the fourth Test at Manchester's Old Trafford, making a strong recovery after losing two wickets without opening their account.

Gill surpasses Kohli's 655 runs against England in 2016
Gill, in the process, added another feather to his cap in what has been a memorable maiden series as India Test captain. The 25-year-old broke the record for most runs by an Indian Test captain in a single series, which had belonged to batting legend Virat Kohli – his predecessor at the No 4 spot in the format – until Saturday.
Kohli's tally of 655 runs, which Gill surpassed on the penultimate day of the ongoing Test in Manchester, also came in a five-match Test series against England, albeit on home soil in late 2016. The 36-year-old had collected two centuries and four half-centuries in that series, which the Indians ended up winning by a dominant 4-0 margin.

Gill, on the other hand, has collected three centuries so far in the ongoing series – all of which were collected in the first two Tests – including a majestic 269 in the second Test at Edgbaston that played a key role in the dominant 336-run victory.
Gill's a long way off from the all-time record for most runs in a Test series – with the legendary Don Bradman having remained unchallenged since he amassed 974 runs in the 1930 Ashes in England.
The newly-appointed Test skipper, however, finds himself within touching distance of the record by an Indian batter, which remains in the possession of former captain Sunil Gavaskar for his 774 runs in four Tests in the his debut series – against West Indies in 1971.
At stumps on the penultimate day of the Manchester Test, Gill's tally in the ongoing series stood at 685, meaning he needs less than 100 runs – 90 to be precise – to surpass 'Sunny G'.

Ben Stokes ridicules ‘injury replacement' debate, Gautam Gambhir hits back: 'Imagine if we had to play with 10 people'
Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir and England captain Ben Stokes appear to be at opposite ends of the spectrum regarding the idea of allowing injury replacements in Test cricket. The topic became a hot topic after Rishabh Pant fractured his foot while batting on Day 1 of the Manchester Test and was in no position to keep the wickets. Dhruv Jurel was allowed to keep the wickets as cover for Pant, but the injured star had to come out to bat in pain as no substitution was allowed for injured players. Ben Stokes, Gautam Gambhir differ on injury replacement player debate.(Reuters and PRI Image) Stokes bluntly ridiculed the idea of injury replacement and suggested that if it came into effect, then the team would start exploring loopholes in it for their benefit. 'I think it is absolutely ridiculous there is a conversation around an injury replacement. There would be too many loopholes for a team to go through. You pick an 11 for the game, injuries are part of it. I think that conversation should be shut down,' said Stokes in the post-match press conference. 'I'm all for injury replacement': Gambhir On the other hand, Gambhir had a completely different take on this, suggesting there's no harm in permitting injury replacements—as long as the decision is made after a thorough evaluation by the umpires and match referee. 'Absolutely, I'm all for it, if the umpires and the match referee sees and feels that there's a major injury. It's very important to have this rule, where you can get a substitute. That is, if it's very visible, there's nothing wrong in doing that. Especially in a series like this, where it's been such a closely fought series, in the previous 3 Test matches," Gambhir said. 'Imagine if we would have had to play with 10 people, 10 men against 11. How unfortunate would this be for us," he added. A concussion substitute was introduced in the wake of Australian opener Phil Hughes' untimely death in 2014 after being hit on the head but there is no such provision in case of any other serious injury. Meanwhile, the differing perspectives of two prominent cricket personalities have sparked a renewed debate over the direction Test cricket should take—whether it must adapt to prioritise player safety or risk diluting the essence of the game's traditional format.

Watch: Washington Sundar Ignores Harry Brook's Handshake, Leaves England Star In Cold
The India vs England 4th Test in Manchester might have ended in a draw but the finish was still drama-filled. England's hopes of clinching the series by winning the Test were ruined by the pair of Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, both of whom got centuries on the final day, helping India secure a draw that keeps them alive in the 5-match series. However, as Jadeja and Sundar were nearing their respective tons, England captain Ben Stokes offered to end the match in a draw, but the proposal was rejected. Later, as Jadeja and Sundar reached their centuries while batting against part-timer Harry Brook, another drama-filled incident took place. In a video that has surfaced on social media, Brook looked to offer a handshake again after Jadeja reached his triple-digit score, thinking India would now accept the offer for an early draw. But both Jadeja and Sundar were busy with the celebrations, leaving Brook in the cold, with his hand extended. Moment of the match. Ravindra Jadeja scored 100 and Harry Brook intentionally came forward to call off the match. But Washington Sundar totally ignored him. Brook reaction after that. — Selfless (@SelflessCricket) July 27, 2025 England continued to use part-timers, Harry Brook and Joe Root, in the final few overs of the game. The match eventually ended when Sundar also reached his century. After the game, England captain Ben Stokes explained why he deployed his part-timers after India's refusal to end the game early. "Yeah, I think all the hard work was done by India. They both (Washi and Jadeja) played incredibly well and it got to that point where there was obviously only one result and there was absolutely no chance I was going to risk any of my big fast bowlers through injuries with one more game to go. Dawsy (Dawson) just bowled so many overs this game his body started to get a little bit tired and started to cramp up in the legs so I wasn't risking any of my frontline bowlers for that last half an hour," he said after the game.
