Daredevil tourists have been warned to stop cliff-diving after the death of a man at an Italian beauty spot. Francesco Aronica, 23, hit his head on the rocks after jumping off a cliff in the southern coastal town of Polignano a Mare on Sunday afternoon. His death sparked an angry reaction from residents who are calling for more patrols and surveillance to stop thrill-seekers attempting the jump – many inspired by professionals who compete in Red Bull's Cliff Diving World Series, held in the town in June. Aronica was visiting the region of Puglia with friends from his home town of Catania, in Sicily, when he dived from a 20-foot-high ledge on the Lama Monachile cliff. He reportedly struck his head on rocks on the side of the cliff and lost consciousness when he entered the water. Medics were unable to revive him and he was transferred to a hospital in the nearby town of Monopoli, where he later died. Anna De Donato, the president of Polignano a Mare's town council, said residents were in shock but that it was impossible to stop people leaping from the cliff. 'It is a different thing when the professionals do it, they have the equipment, the support,' Ms De Donato told The Telegraph. 'The tourists need to pay attention and avoid being reckless. I am a mother with a son of the same age and I know they don't listen to their parents' advice.' Vito Carrieri, the town's mayor, said the prompt emergency response was 'not enough to prevent the tragedy'. But residents insist more should be done to prevent any further accidents and one said lifeguards should be employed to monitor the area. 'Please do something to prevent these things from happening,' one said. Another wrote: 'We need more controls if it is not possible to close the beaches.' The death of the young diver came as Italy reported a surge in summer drownings this year. According to the latest statistics, there has been a fatality every two days in lakes and rivers. In Lombardy, the region surrounding Milan, there were five drownings over the weekend, with a total of 44 deaths recorded since the beginning of June. Many were young foreigners who ignored or did not understand the signs warning of danger, according to media reports. Aronica was a talented athlete and played American football for the Elephants gridiron team in his home town. Paying tribute, Renato Gargiulo, the team coach, wrote: 'You became one of the strongest receivers of the Elephants Catania, amazing me with your unusual athletic skills and great technique. With tears in my eyes, I embrace you with great affection.'

A 17-year-old boy who filmed a 'hero' grandfather as he lay dying on the street before sharing the video on social media has avoided jail. The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, recorded Paul Lawrence, 51, after he was killed in the early hours of January 28 last year. Others could be heard laughing and joking in the background of the video that ended up capturing the tragic last moment's of Mr Lawrence's life. The boy pleaded guilty to sending a grossly offensive, indecent or menacing message at Worthing Youth Court, West Sussex, yesterday. He also admitted possessing cannabis and was given a 12-month Youth Referral Order following the incident on Gladonian Road in Littlehampton, West Sussex. It comes as police slammed the 17-year-old's 'inexcusable' behaviour that 'compounded' the grief felt by Mr Lawrence's family. Detective Chief Inspector Alex Campbell from Sussex Police said: 'In the video, voices could be heard laughing and joking during what would prove to be the tragic last moment's of Paul's life. 'The video was then circulated by the defendant to other people on social media. 'This sort of behaviour is inexcusable and has compounded the grief felt by Paul's family at this most distressing of times.' Another 17-year-old boy, from Bognor Regis, has been charged with manslaughter. He is scheduled to appear in court again on October 6 for a pre-trial preparation hearing. Paying tribute, Mr Lawrence's siblings, John and Shelley, said: 'Paul was the kindest man that would help anyone. 'He would light up the darkest of rooms with his smile and cheeky laugh. 'Our hearts are not only broken but they're totally ripped apart.' His daughters, Louise and Josephine, also released a statement through Sussex Police describing their father as 'full of happiness' and 'loved by all who knew him'. They said: 'He was a family man who devoted his life to his children and grandchildren, and he was immensely proud of everything they achieved. 'Paul was a true representation of what every man should be or should aspire to be. Kind, generous, and always laughing or smiling with the most reassuring smiley eyes. Devoted mum killed by falling tree branch after ‘pushing daughter, 5, out of way' on walk with husband & son is pictured
A HERO mum who was killed in front of her two young children when a tree branch fell on her has been pictured for the first time. Madia Kauser, who was named locally today, is said to have pushed her five-year-old daughter out of the way of the falling branch. 5 Madia was sadly killed while taking her daughter and son for an evening stroll near Witton Country Park in Blackburn, Lancashire on Monday. The little girl was reportedly in a push chair that the brave mother managed to shove out of the way before being crushed by the falling branch. Madia's young daughter thankfully survived unharmed because of her mum's noble actions. Former mayor and local councillor Zamir Khan MBE, an uncle in the family, told the Daily Mail that her body was still with the coroner. He added: "Her little girl told me her mother pushed her out of the way as the branch fell. "The older boy was walking with his father in front and could not believe what happened. "It is very hard for the children. I do not think they will ever walk in that park again." Madia's husband was said to be just a few feet away with the couple's son when the tragedy unfolded. He rushed to offer aid to his wife but nothing could be done to save the woman. She was sadly pronounced dead at the scene after paramedics battled to save her. The remainder of the tree has since been removed by Blackburn with Darwen council, the local authority has also trimmed back nearby tree branches. Tributes have begun to pour in for the hero mother who "would do anything for her children." Social media tributes have described the heroic mum as a "lovely person" with the local Muslim community coming together to remember her. A gathering was held at Blackburn's Madina mosque on Wednesday where condolences were offered for the tragic mum and her family. Family members from across the country travelled to attend the gathering. A local social media group hosted a message for the mum, reading: "Please keep this mother and her young children in your prayers. "May Allah give them Sabrun Jameel. Condolences can be paid to the family at Madina Masjid on Oak St from 11am." The local authority said: "Blackburn with Darwen borough council is deeply saddened to confirm that a member of the public has tragically died following an incident in Witton Park, when a large tree branch fell.' 5 5
