Image: SA Rugby Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus was impressed by the enthusiasm and willingness of the three Junior Springboks who trained with the national team for the past two weeks in Johannesburg. The world champions wrapped up their conditioning camp on Thursday as they continue to lay the foundation for the Rugby Championship starting next weekend against Australia at Ellis Park. Loose forward Bathobele Hlekani, winger Cheswill Jooste and Haashim Pead experienced a Bok setup for the first time after being invited by Erasmus to train with the Boks after their exploits at the World Rugby U20 Championship, where they won the title for the first time in 13 years. Rassie Erasmus on the three #JuniorBoks that trained with the #Springboks: 'It was impressive to see their enthusiasm and the way they grabbed the opportunity with both hands' 💚💛#ForeverGreenForeverGold — Springboks (@Springboks) August 7, 2025 Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ 'We were very pleased with the way they slotted into the training sessions and used the time to interact with the Springbok players and learn from them, even though we made it clear that there was no pressure on them to grasp all our structures and systems,' Erasmus said after the camp. 'It was rather an opportunity for them to experience how we operate in the team and to expose them to what is required to perform at this level, and they certainly embraced the opportunity. It was good to see how they took the time to understand our structures and how they used this chance to engage with the players on a one-on-one basis. 'They all have bright futures, and we hope the experience they gained and the lessons learned will set them in good standing, as they look to further develop their careers and strive to reach this level in the coming years.' Listen to Felix getting involved 😤🔊 Getting the ball off Bathobele Hlekani is no simple task 😂👇#SSRugby — SuperSport Rugby (@SSRugby) July 31, 2025 Pead grabbed the eye at the U20 with his explosive performances behind the pack. Jooste impressed with his silky side-stepping and the pace with which he beat multiple defenders. Hlekani's physical presence gave the Baby Boks impetus on the defence and when the forwards carried the ball up into contact. In a clip from the recent Bok camp training, he showed his power by fighting off multiple World Cup winners and his junior colleagues when they tried to take the ball from him in a simulated contact session. Jooste, who played SA U18 last year, described it as an incredible experience. 'It was particularly memorable for me to be inspired and motivated by the players I look up to and who are already where I'd like to be. They didn't only share their knowledge, but also their energy and spirit of unity.'

Soweto Marathon shifts to late November under new organisation

The 30th edition of the Soweto Marathon is shifting to late November, a spokesperson for the event said on Thursday, contradicting claims by Soweto Marathon Trust (SMT) representatives that the country's biggest one-day road race had been cancelled. Jabu Mbuli said nine of 11 Soweto running clubs had agreed to administer the race through an NPO. This came after allegations against the previous two bodies that staged the race — the SMT and then a private company that stepped in to organise the past two races in 2023 and 2024. 'We believe this [NPO] option will assist in ensuring good and proper governance and sound financial accountability,' Mbuli said. 'The appointed non-executive board of directors will comprise largely of qualified professionals and will include chartered accountants and attorneys. The athletics clubs of Soweto own this race and they will focus on the race organising committee to run this race by the people, for the people.' SMT representatives recently claimed there would be no race this year, but Mbuli said the 2025 race would be launched this month and would take place at the end of November.

Back in Proteas, Brevis savours dream of playing Australia after silencing the noise

Last summer saw a new Brevis, seemingly relaxed and comfortable in his own skin, enjoying a number of stunning innings for the Titans, MI Cape Town and the Chennai Super Kings, who signed him as a late replacement. The flow of runs ensured his return to the Proteas and he made his Test debut in Zimbabwe in June, lashing a 41-ball half-century, then playing in the T20 tri-series with New Zealand. On the eve of his departure with the Proteas to Australia for six white-ball internationals, the 22-year-old said his slump occurred when he started to listen to too many advisers. 'The biggest change over the past year has been that I now know who I trust with my game and I've gone back to being the original Dewald Brevis,' he said. 'I was blessed with a talent and my natural self is who I want to be. That went away a bit because I tried to be too clever and I listened to so many different people. My only focus now is playing with a smile. 'It's very special to be back in the Proteas squad. When you first play, that environment is so amazing, but then when you go out of it, it feels like you've been removed from the inner circle and it's very tough.
