Roar Sign Exciting Young Matildas Defender Amali Kinsella On Two-Year Deal

Scoop25-07-2025
Brisbane Roar are delighted to announce that young Queenslander Amali Kinsella has signed a two-year scholarship contract ahead of the 25/26 Ninja A-League season from the Football Queensland QAS program.
Kinsella, who was a short-term injury replacement at the backend of the 24/25 season, made her A-League debut against Sydney FC in Round 17 at Leichhardt Oval.
The Sunshine Coast local grew up playing at Caboolture FC in an all-boys' side, coached by her father before moving to Football Queensland's elite women's youth program where Kinsella continued to excel.
In 2024, Kinsella received the Sue Monteath Award (Player of the Year) as well as the Under 18 Players' Player Award, following a standout season that saw her establish herself as a regular Brisbane Roar women's train-on player.
The defender starred for Brisbane Roar in a pre-season match against the Queensland Women's State Team, securing a second-half brace.
Speaking on committing her future to the club, Kinsella said: 'It's a very big privilege for me to be a part of this team.
'I've been coming to these games for so long and I've always wanted to play for Brisbane Roar.
'Getting to make my debut last year was very special. I feel like I had been working very hard up to that moment.
'I want to get as much game time as I can to take my football to the next level, so I feel like this is the perfect place for me to be.'
Head Coach Alex Smith said: 'Amali has been patient and worked extremely hard to get here.
'She brings an aggressive attacking mindset to her position, which fits in perfectly with the way we want to play.
'She thoroughly deserved her debut last year, and I have no doubt she will build on that this season.
'Another young Queenslander we are expecting big things from, not only in our program but the national teams as well.'
25/26 Ninja A-League Women's Contracted Players: Chloe Lincoln, Emily Pringle, Ruby Cuthbert, Leia Varley, Momo Hayashi, Isabela Hoyos, Alicia Woods, Zara Kruger, Laini Freier, Amali Kinsella and Grace Kuilamu.

Palace lose appeal against Europa League demotion at CAS

Crystal Palace players celebrate their 2025 FA Cup win. Photo: AFP Crystal Palace's appeal against UEFA's decision to drop them from the Europa League to the third-tier Conference League has been dismissed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. UEFA demoted Palace while allowing Olympique Lyonnais to play in the Europa League as, at the time of assessment on 1 March, the Eagle Football Group were majority owners of Lyon while their chairman John Textor owned a controlling stake in Palace. Nottingham Forest, who finished seventh in the Premier League last season, will replace Palace in the Europa League. Palace qualified for the Europa League after winning the FA Cup last season but were punished by Uefa for breaching multi-club ownership rules. "After considering the evidence, the panel found that John Textor, founder of Eagle Football Holdings, had shares in CPFC and OL and was a board member with decisive influence over both clubs at the time of UEFA's assessment date," the CAS said in a statement on Monday (local time). "The panel also dismissed the argument by CPFC that they received unfair treatment in comparison to Nottingham Forest and OL." Palace did not respond to a request for comment. Club chairman Steve Parish told reporters on Sunday that if Palace lost the appeal, they would "have to look if there's any steps after that." The club appealed against UEFA's decision last month. The appeal came days before New York Jets co-owner Robert Wood "Woody" Johnson completed the purchase of Eagle Football Holdings' stake in Palace. Textor has also resigned from Lyon's board of directors with Michele Kang appointed chairwoman and president. As both Lyon and Palace had qualified for the Europa League, the French club were allowed to keep their place because they had finished higher in their respective league. Lyon finished sixth in Ligue 1 while Palace were 12th in the Premier League. "Olympique Lyonnais welcomes today's decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport confirming its participation in the Europa League," Lyon said in a statement. Palace, who won the Community Shield on Sunday beating Liverpool in a penalty shootout, are set to play in the Conference League's qualifying playoff round later this month. -Reuters

X-League golf finals unite Aussies & Kiwis with tech & team spirit

Nine teams from across Australia and New Zealand will compete in Melbourne this month for the title in X-Golf's X-League, described as Australasia's largest technology-powered golf competition. The event, now in its 14th year, brings together participants from cities including Christchurch, Darwin, Perth, Cairns, and several Victorian regions. Teams are comprised of self-described weekend hackers and more experienced golfers, each with their eyes set on the championship, which will be hosted at a facility in Clyde North, south-east of Melbourne. The X-League was created by Melbourne-based brothers Ben and Charles Styles in partnership with Korean developers. It serves as a platform that blends traditional golf with advanced simulator technologies, such as high-definition cameras, lasers, impact sensors, and infrared systems, to provide accurate shot tracking and realistic play. The competition runs across three 10-week seasons per year, with teams of three contesting nine-hole matches using handicap scoring. Over 1,000 players engage in the league annually through X-Golf's 32 venues spanning Australia and New Zealand. The reach of the X-League is evident in the diversity of its finalists, with teams hailing from Christchurch, Darwin, Perth, Cairns, and other cities. Contestants include workers from various backgrounds, such as tradespeople and office colleagues, reflecting the accessible nature of the competition. "The buzz is real," said Christchurch X-League finalist Justin Salter. "We went from hitting balls after work to preparing to fly to Australia for the Championship. It's certainly the most any of us have achieved in sport and we still can't believe it!" Participation continues to rise in line with broader trends reported by Golf Australia, which noted a 9% year-on-year increase in the sport's uptake. In tandem, the growth of Esports in Australia is notable, with recent market research estimating that the local Esports industry will generate over AUD $200 million in revenue during 2024. The X-League aims to provide an alternative to solitary golf by encouraging team play and competition through digital technology. According to Nick Treble from X-Golf, the league offers an experience that merges the camaraderie of team sports with the realism of advanced simulator technology. "You've got the mate ship of a local footy team, the buzz of Esports and the realism of the best tech currently on the global market," he said. "We're very proud to reimagine the traditional game of golf and to bring the opportunity to get involved to more interested players than ever before." Finalists from Darwin have also highlighted their surprise at progressing through the competition. Terry, a participant from the Northern Territory, commented on the surreal experience. "We're what you'd call the quintessential Aussie hackers," Darwin X-League finalist Terry laughed. "Every time we say it out loud, we still can't believe we won this thing and that we're heading off to represent the NT." This year's championship prizes are valued at AUD $20,000, with winners also set to receive a trip to the Barnbougle Dunes Golf Links in Tasmania. The championship event is scheduled for the last week of August, with venues located in various urban and regional areas, including Townsville, Toowoomba, Marion, Balcatta, and Launceston, as well as Christchurch and other locations in New Zealand. X-League's continued expansion suggests ongoing interest in combining traditional sports with modern digital experiences, and the league's organisers report strong engagement from both recreational and competitive golfers.
