Yahoo5 days ago
The Lakers are back in Summer League action on Monday night. With a late finish before their game, tip-off was pushed back to 11:20 p.m. ET. While other young stars have already been shut down for the Summer League, Bronny James got the starting nod on Monday.
Los Angeles had a cross-town battle against the Clippers in their second-to-last game of the summer. James was overshadowed in his rookie season by all the drama surrounding his mere presence in L.A., and now he's hoping for a more "normal" Year 2.
Despite all of the early critiques, James has looked like he has improved over the past year. Heading into this game against the Clippers, James has averaged 8.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, and an assist over the four games he has played in. This could be his last Summer League action if Los Angeles chooses to sit him in the finale Thursday against the Celtics.

Lakers jersey history No. 0 — Orlando Woolridge

Through the 2024-25 season, the Los Angeles Lakers have had a total of 506 players suit up for them, going back to their days in Minneapolis. Some were forgettable, some were serviceable, some were good and a select few were flat-out legendary. As the Lakers approach their 80th season of existence (they were founded back in 1946 as the Detroit Gems in the National Basketball League), LeBron Wire is taking a look at each player who has worn their jersey, whether it has been a purple and gold one or the ones they donned back in the Midwest during their early years. Here, we take a look at Orlando Woolridge, a forward who played two seasons with the Lakers. He was the No. 6 pick in the 1981 NBA Draft after a relatively quiet four-year tenure at the University of Notre Dame. His one or two pro seasons were also relatively quiet, but by the 1983-84 campaign, he emerged as a legitimate scoring option. That year, he averaged 19.3 points a game, and the following season, he put up 22.9 points a game as a member of Michael Jordan's first supporting cast. But while the 6-foot-9 forward was an exciting and very athletic player who threw down show-stopping dunks, he didn't exactly have a positive reputation. He was regarded as someone who was more concerned with putting up big scoring games than helping his team win games. Even worse, he had a well-documented cocaine habit off the court. The Lakers brought him in as a free agent in the summer of 1988 after winning their fifth NBA championship of the decade. With fan favorite Kurt Rambis departing and big man Mychal Thompson starting to age, they needed a little more depth in the frontcourt. In two seasons with L.A., Woolridge registered 11.1 points in 21.4 minutes a game and shot 51.4% from the floor. The team reached the NBA Finals in 1989 after going undefeated through the first three rounds of the playoffs, only to be swept there by the Detroit Pistons after Byron Scott and Magic Johnson injured their hamstrings. The following year, they fell in the second round of the playoffs to the Phoenix Suns. In the summer of 1990, the Lakers traded Woolridge to the Denver Nuggets for two conditional second-round draft picks. He played four more seasons in the NBA with four different teams before finishing his basketball career in Italy.

Celtics waive G League MVP JD Davison to get back under NBA's second apron

JD Davison had a heck of a season in the G League and the Boston Celtics picked up his team option for next season in June. But on Thursday, the Celtics announced the team had waived the 22-year-old guard. With the move, Boston has dipped back under the NBA's second apron for the 2025-26 season. Davison was drafted by the Celtics out of Alabama with the 53rd pick in the second round of the 2022 NBA Draft. The 6-foot-1 guard played in just 36 NBA games over his three seasons in the Celtics organization, including a career-high 16 games last season. In his NBA action, Davison averaged just 1.9 points off 35 percent shooting and 0.9 assists per game. He did earn a championship ring with the Celtics in 2024, having played in eight games with the team during the regular season. Davison was much more productive in the G League for the Maine Celtics. Last season, he averaged 25.1 points, 7.6 assists, and 5.6 rebounds to earn G League MVP honors. In April, Boston converted his two-way contract into a standard two-year deal. Ahead of this summer, there wasn't much of a path for Davison on the Celtics. But he wasn't able to carve out a role or prove he could earn minutes in the NBA. when he played in Boston. Getting under the second apron and away from future restrictions has been an objective of Brad Stevens' this summer, especially with the Celtics likely without Jayson Tatum next season. Waiving Davison puts the Celtics at roughly $2 million under the $207.8 million second apron, according to Spotrac. While the Celtics have an open roster spot after waiving Davison, signing anyone would likely put Boston right back into the second apron. More roster tinkering could be on the way from Stevens this summer, with newcomers Anfernee Simons and Georges Niang potential trade candidates the rest of the offseason.
