Tencent Games Joins the Playing for the Planet Alliance to Champion Green Gaming

HONG KONG, June 9, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Tencent Games, a leading global platform for game development, publishing and operations, today announced that it has joined Playing for the Planet as a member. Playing for the Planet is an Alliance of studios, publishers, and games organizations, supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and led by the industry to reduce the environmental impact of gaming and inspire climate action through play.
This collaboration reflects Tencent Games' commitment to sustainable innovation and environmental responsibility, aligning with Tencent's goal of achieving carbon neutrality across its operations and supply chain, by 2030. More importantly, it underscores Tencent's support of the gaming community and commitment to driving positive change in the industry.
'Tencent Games encompasses a diverse global ecosystem — from our homegrown studios to our global studio network — united by a shared commitment to building a sustainable video games business and future for all,' said Brent Irvin, Corporate Vice President of Tencent. 'Joining the Alliance underscores our belief that video games can be a force for good and a powerful platform for paving the way to a greener future. We look forward to close collaboration with partners across the industry to drive climate awareness and action through engaging, innovative gameplay experiences.'
Tencent Games, along with its network of global studios, has already been working closely with the Alliance on its flagship initiative, the Green Game Jam, in which game developers create in-game activations that encourage players to take actions for the planet.
As a committed advocate for sustainability in gaming, Tencent Games and its network studios will continue to champion green action through the Green Game Jam, while collaborating with industry partners and experts to explore new programs that inspire positive environmental awareness among younger players.
As part of the commitment, Tencent Games will support the Alliance and gaming industry in its sustainability endeavors by developing training programs that empower game developers to integrate sustainability principles in their development practices, from energy-efficient operations to eco-conscious game design. Tencent Games is also collaborating with the Alliance to explore the development of an environmental awareness initiative for university students.
'The video games industry has the ability to engage, inspire and captivate the imaginations of billions of people across the world. This makes them a really important partner in addressing the nature and climate emergencies,' said Sam Barratt, Chief of Youth, Education, and Advocacy at the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). 'We are delighted that Tencent Games is committing to take further action on this agenda. Working with the video games industry to strengthen a collaborative and collective approach to reduce carbon emissions and build a more sustainable world is a mission more urgent than ever.'
Tencent Games has been recognized for its sustainability initiatives. The company was awarded the Sustainability Award at Gamescom 2024, for its action-oriented commitments to operating its business sustainability.

Threads is finally getting DMs

Threads users will soon be able to send direct messages to each other without having to leave the platform. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on June 10th that Threads will start testing its own DM system this week, starting in Hong Kong, Thailand, and Argentina, with plans to expand to more locations 'soon.' The experiment will introduce a separate inbox for Threads DMs instead of connecting users to the inbox of their linked Instagram account. This was a possibility given that the two Meta platforms are closely integrated, requiring users to login with their Instagram credentials to create a Threads account and automatically following the same users if they're on Threads, too. The Threads inbox can be accessed by clicking the new envelope symbol on the taskbar, located at the bottom of the display on iPhone and Android mobile apps, or on the left on desktop. Meta has not mentioned when the feature will become widely available. Direct messaging was one of the most requested features from Threads users, who currently have no means to directly send private messages to other users. The closest solution was to jump over to Instagram. Having distinct inboxes for each platform will make it easier to manage messages — especially for business pages and content creators — and bring Threads closer to the X experience.

Bitcoin Pulls Back After Latest Push Toward Record Falls Short

Bitcoin retreated from the highs of the day after an earlier push toward the record price level set a little more than two weeks ago fell short. The original cryptocurrency has jumped around 16% so far this year with the crypto-friendly Trump administration seen bolstering demand for digital assets. Expectations that the US is moving closer to resolving trade conflicts with nations such as China has helped to increase overall demand for riskier assets.

Threads is finally getting a DM inbox

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said today that the company's social network Threads will finally begin testing a separate DM (direct message) inbox that's separate from users' Instagram DM Inboxes. This means Threads users won't have to use Instagram or switch apps to chat with someone on the platform. The company will initially test this feature in limited geographies, including Hong Kong, Thailand, and Argentina, with plans to roll it out in other locations soon. The chat feature is currently limited to one-on-one conversations, not group messages. This will likely be seen as a positive development for Meta's newest social network. As TechCrunch previously noted, many people have a different set of followers on Threads as compared with Instagram. Plus, there's a chance that some number of Threads users don't often use their Instagram accounts, if they use the app at all. Instagram has been thinking of how to approach Threads DMs for some time. Last year, the company was working on a prototype that allowed users to send a message to their Instagram inbox directly from the Threads app. In 2023, Instagram head Adam Mosseri also said that the social network hoped to make the Instagram inbox work for Threads. His thinking at the time was that people have similar followings on both social networks, which is not always true. When Threads debuted in July 2023, it was heavily dependent on Instagram's network effects, with features that immediately connected Instagram users with their friends and other creators. But after more than 20 months of existence, the company realized that people were forming different kinds of networks on Threads, due to its public nature and similarities with other short-form apps like X and Bluesky. Boston, MA | REGISTER NOW Meta said that it decided to create a separate DM inbox feature because Threads users were asking for a way to have one-on-one conversations without having to switch apps. While it's good that Threads finally made a DM inbox available, the company is late in rolling it out. Its rival social network Bluesky introduced DMs in May 2024. Meta's announcement also comes just a few days after Elon Musk-owned X released a new XChat feature with support for group messages, vanishing mode, and file sharing, to improve on DMs.
