RTD seizes 270 luxury cars in nationwide crackdown
Published on: Saturday, August 16, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 16, 2025 By: Malay Mail Text Size: Some of the seized cars. - Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department's (RTD) 'Ops Luxury 3.0' has hit the streets hard, seizing 270 high-end rides nationwide over the past two weeks. According to The Star, Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Rolls-Royces were among the flashy machines caught being driven without valid road tax or insurance. JPJ director-general, Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli, said the sweep snared celebrities, influencers and entrepreneurs, with some owing up to RM29,000 in back taxes. 'The seized cars include Ferrari, Lamborghini and Rolls-Royce, with some of them still driven without road tax for about three years. 'In Johor alone, we detained 11 vehicles, including a car with an annual road tax of RM12,000. 'In Kuala Lumpur, the highest road tax arrears recorded was RM29,000,' he reportedly said at a press conference yesterday, as cited by The Star. Owners can only reclaim their luxury rides once all outstanding road tax, insurance, and summonses are cleared. 'Driving without a valid road tax and insurance puts not only other road users at risk, but also the driver themselves in the event of accidents,' Aedy Fadly warned. He added that the crackdown will soon expand to Sabah and Sarawak, promising more high-octane surprises in the months ahead. - Malay Mail * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Over 500 entrepreneurs benefit from social enterprise programme
Published on: Saturday, August 16, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 16, 2025 By: Patimang Abdul Ghani Text Size: Kamal presents a certificate to one of the seminar participants. KOTA MARUDU: The Madani Entrepreneur Seminar: Social Enterprise (Sum:SE) has been highlighted as an important platform to expose entrepreneurs to the potential of social entrepreneurship in driving community development, particularly in Sabah. Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Kamal Adli Abd Halim said a total of 516 entrepreneurs have benefited from the implementation of six seminars held across the state so far. He noted that providing support, training, and guidance to rural entrepreneurs in areas such as Kota Marudu, Pitas, and Beluran could create significant impact on the local economy and community wellbeing. Kamal added that Sabah has strong potential to nurture social entrepreneurs who can create job opportunities for marginalised groups, improve community livelihoods, and apply sustainable practices such as recycling. The seminar, organised by the National Institute of Entrepreneurship (Insken) and attended by over 100 entrepreneurs from northern districts, also featured collaboration with local organisations including Scenic, Sosea, Sata, and the DIDR. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Warisan rep disputes the RM1 billion bond repayment
Published on: Saturday, August 16, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 16, 2025 Text Size: 'This shortfall was due to weak fiscal discipline before Warisan formed the government,' said Sarifuddin, accusing the minister of 'cherry-picking' records. Kota Kinabalu: Former Sabah assistant finance minister Sarifuddin Hata disputed State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun's version of the repayment of a RM1 billion State bond. He claimed that when Warisan took over in 2018, a year before the bond matured, the Bond Repayment Fund contained only about RM400 million or RM600 million short of what should have been saved under the previous RM200 million-a-year plan. 'This shortfall was due to weak fiscal discipline before Warisan formed the government,' said Sarifuddin, accusing the minister of 'cherry-picking' records. The Warisan Merotai Assemblyman said budget tabling did not mean allocations were actually deposited, and official records, undisclosed to the public, confirmed the 2018 balance was far below the target. He argued that if repayment was 'fully guaranteed' as claimed, there would have been no need for Warisan to urgently top up the fund. 'Warisan raised the amount to RM1 billion in under 12 months, while also covering interest that pushed the total repayment above RM1 billion , without taking new loans, cutting development, or burdening the public. 'This was not a routine matter but an effort to save Sabah's finances, protect its credit rating and credibility,' he said. Sarifuddin also claimed that Warisan implemented the sales tax on petroleum products in April 2020, gazetted under its administration. 'GRS was only able to claim the revenue because the first payment was received after they took over. The policy, groundwork and legal framework were entirely Warisan's,' he claimed and demanded transparency on how the bond proceeds were spent. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
