Around 37,000 farmers adopt natural farming in Himachals Una and Hamirpur
Over 20,000 farmers in Hamirpur district and 16,853 farmers in Una have adopted natural farming, officials said. Deputy Commissioner of Hamirpur Amarjeet Singh said around 96 quintals of wheat and 9 quintals of turmeric prepared through natural farming have been purchased in the district in the Rabi season, while 53 quintals of maize were purchased in the last Kharif season.
Project Director of Aatma Project, Hamirpur, Nitin Sharma said that to promote natural farming, farmers are given a subsidy of Rs 25,000 for the purchase of indigenous cows.
Apart from this, a transport subsidy of Rs 5,000 and payment of animal market fee up to Rs 2,000 are also provided under the project.
A subsidy of Rs 8,000 is given for paving the floor of the cowshed and setting up systems for collecting cow urine. Additionally, a subsidy of up to Rs 2,250 is available for preparing materials required for natural farming, such as drums and other equipment.
Shakuntala Devi and Sushma Devi of Gram Panchayat Amlahad, who have adopted natural farming, have found new hope. Not only has it significantly reduced their farming costs, but their crops are also fetching better prices, and their food is now free from harmful chemicals, Sharma added.
The ATMA Project Director Virender Bagga claims 41.66 metric tonnes of natural wheat and 11.15 metric tonnes of natural maize were purchased by farmers in Una district.

Gurgaon: Haryana, the state with lowest forest cover in India, sanctioned Rs 1,000 crore for compensatory afforestation, but utilised just 55% of the amount in the five years between 2019 and 2024. That leaves Rs 450 crore – money that was meant to carry out plantation drives – unused. This discrepancy was reported by the Haryana forest department in a July 11 submission to the central empowered committee (CEC) of the Supreme Court, which is scrutinising the efficacy of compensatory afforestation (CA) drives and the use of CA funds across all states and Union territories. A study of satellite imagery by the Forest Survey of India (FSI) shows that forest cover in the state increased 28sqm, or 2,800 hectares, between 2019 and 2023. "Haryana's forest cover is merely 3.5% of the state's geographical area. At such a time, when the state has critically low forest cover, nearly Rs 450 crore remains unutilised under CAMPA," said Gaurav Bansal, a Supreme Court advocate who frequently takes up cases related to violations of environmental laws. Vaishali Rana, an environmentalist, said, "The data points to a fundamental disconnect between plantation targets and actual forest growth. Without ecological planning, site selection, and post-plantation care, you can spend crores and still not get a forest."Rana added that the state govt should form a committee to audit compensatory afforestation drives. Principal chief conservator of forests (PCCF) Vineet Kumar Garg told TOI that the recent FSI figures don't fully reflect Haryana's plantation efforts. "First, FSI uses satellite imagery that isn't high-resolution. As a result, plantations carried out last year or this year may not show up in the data. The latest FSI report is based on satellite images from Oct 2022 — so, it misses most recent plantations. Moreover, even current plantations need three to four years to grow enough to register as canopy cover," Garg said. On funds, he said data submitted to CEC highlights "fund allocation, not actual spending". "For example, in 2024–25, the annual plan of operation (APO) proposed Rs 250 crore. Of this, only Rs 110 crore was approved, and that too after the monsoon, which delayed plantation work. Actual expenditure was just Rs 79 crore. This was not included in the data submitted to CEC," the PCCF said.

73 unsafe school buldings to be razed in Noida, but wait for classrooms continues till scrap auctioned
Noida: Seventy-three dilapidated govt primary school buildings—49 of them in Noida and 24 in Ghaziabad—are set to be razed under a statewide drive to identify and rebuild unsafe school buildings. A letter, issued by the education department last month, said no school will allow students to sit in dilapidated buildings or classrooms. The directive comes on the heels of the July 25 Rajasthan school building collapse that left seven children dead and 27 injured, some of them critically. A TOI report on July 12 also flagged how 1,200 students of standards 6 to 8 at a govt-run composite school in Noida's Chhijarsi had to attend classes in open corridors due to space crunch. Principal of a primary school in Malakpur, which is on the list of dilapidated buildings drawn up by the education department, said of its three classrooms, one was in a poor state. "Ceiling plaster is peeling off and might fall on anyone at any time. So, classes are now being conducted in two rooms. Greater Noida Authority assured that a new building would be constructed, but since last year, no work has started," the principal said. "Recently, the basic education department has set the building up for auction. Once the building is razed, classes will shift to a nearby marriage hall." At Balla Ke Madya primary school, where at least three classrooms require urgent repair, the wait is on for a bidder who is willing to pay Rs 1.5 lakh for the scraps and debris—a rate fixed by PWD after a visit. Principal Rakesh Gautam said there have been three rounds of auction already, the last one held three months ago when a villager offered Rs 66,000. "The price is so high that no one agrees to pay. Luckily, in 2024, a private company built two classrooms with CSR funds. But we have 121 students, and two rooms are not enough. Several classes are held under a tin shade now," Gautam said. The school, he said, needs at least three more classrooms to accommodate all students.
