Ledecky wins 800m freestyle, US set relay world record, more gold for China's divers
Ledecky had to give her all to secure a 23rd career world title as she was pushed to the limit by Australian Lani Pallister and Canadian star Summer McIntosh from start to finish.
Ledecky edged Pallister by a mere 0.32 of a second as she clocked a championship record of eight minutes 5.62 seconds, missing her world record by just 1.5 seconds.
McIntosh, who briefly led with 100m to go, earned bronze in her first major 800m duel with Ledecky, 1.67 seconds back. McIntosh had won the 400m freestyle, 200m medley and 200m butterfly gold in Singapore.
'It was incredibly fast; they pushed me all the way,' nine-time Olympic champion Ledecky said.

2025 World Games: Lau and Sham to carry Hong Kong flag at opening ceremony in Chengdu
This year's World Games in Chengdu are expected to open on Thursday with a dazzling display of fireworks, drones and featuring the pandas that give the city its name. And Alex Lau Tsz-kwan and Lydia Sham Hiu-yu, who compete in squash and wushu respectively, will serve as Hong Kong's flag bearers at the ceremony at the Tianfu International Convention Centre, an honour officials said marked their 'remarkable achievements in international competition'. Lau claimed the men's singles title at the 23rd Asian Squash Individual Championships held in Malaysia this June, becoming just the third Hong Kong athlete to win a gold in the event. 'It is an incredible honour to be the flag bearer,' he said. 'This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, I will do my best to showcase the spirit of the team.' Sham, meanwhile, is carrying her city's flag for the second time, having previously done so at the Covid-delayed World University Games in Chengdu in 2023. Lydia Sham has already had the honour of being a flag bearer. Shohei Ohtani the third Japanese-born player to reach 1,000 hits in MLB
Shohei Ohtani notched the 1,000th hit of his Major League Baseball career in impressive style on Wednesday, with a two-run homer as part of an impressive two-day display that could not get the Los Angeles Dodgers past St. Louis. In his starting pitcher's role, Ohtani struck out eight and allowed just two infield singles in four dominant innings. And at the plate he notched his milestone homer in the third inning, a two-run blast that put Los Angeles up 2-1. It was his 39th home run of the season, one behind National League leader Kyle Schwarber and three behind MLB leader Cal Raleigh. The Dodgers could not hold on to their early lead, however, as the Cardinals rallied for a 5-3 victory at Dodger Stadium. But Ohtani joined newly minted Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki and Hideki Matsui as the only Japanese-born players to reach 1,000 hits in the major leagues. Ichiro finished his career with 3,089 and Matsui with 1,253.
