Bruins mock draft: One educated guess as to how GM Don Sweeney will use Boston's seven selections

Boston Globe26-06-2025
'It's such a big jump for a lot of these kids. Some of them aren't physically or mentally ready to handle the grind and the pressure of playing in the National Hockey League. And while in each draft there tends to be sometimes one, two, or three players that we feel could make that jump, we're certainly more focused on where they're going to be in 3, 5, 7, 10 years.'

Nadeau said 'it's a little wide open' at the top of the draft, and added, 'There's a lot of good players, and I think we're going to be excited with the player that we're going to be looking at when we get up to pick at 7, if in fact that's the pick we make.'

For the purposes of this exercise, we'll assume Sweeney, Nadeau & Co. make all their selections.

First round (No. 7 overall): Porter Martone, RW, Brampton (Ontario Hockey League)
It might be a bit of stretch to think the 6-foot-3-inch, 208-pound Martone could slip to seventh, but there is an abundance of talented centers in this class, allowing a winger to drop a bit.
Martone plays a mature, physical game. After a 98-point season, he had a well-documented spin with Team Canada at the World Championship. That's a nice introduction to the big time.
Second round (No. 51): Vojtech Cihar, LW, HC Energie Karlovy Vary (Czechia)
Cihar's numbers won't blow you away (4 goals, 9 points in 43 games), but it's important to note the 18-year-old played against pros.
He's a speedy and relentless forechecker who will staple himself to opponents' hips. In other words, a real pest. Cihar (6 feet, 181 pounds) has energy for days.
Second round (No. 61): Carter Klippenstein, C, Brandon (Western Hockey League)
The Bruins land their center here. A highly energetic player with good vision and awareness, the 6-3, 181-pounder has room to grow his body and his game.
Klippenstein pays attention to the details and could develop into a solid, responsible 200-foot center.
Third round (No. 69): Peyton Kettles, D, Swift Current (WHL)
Kettles is a big body (6-5, 190) who plays with the expected physicality and snarl that comes with being a shutdown defenseman.
He skates really well for a large man and rarely loses one-on-one battles. Kettles would benefit from some tutorials with Zdeno Chara and Nikita Zadorov.
Fourth round (No. 100): Artyom Gonchar, D, Stalnye Lisy Magnitogorsk (Russia)
A highly confident puck-mover who makes up for his comparative lack of size (6 feet, 154 pounds) with speed, skill, and savvy. His uncle, Sergei, had a 20-year NHL career that included a brief stay in Boston (2004).

Fifth round (No. 133): Filip Ekberg, LW, Ottawa (OHL)
Seemingly possessing X-ray vision, Ekberg has an uncanny knack for delivering catchable passes to his teammates and putting them in position to be successful. Ekberg (5-10, 168) shined at the World Juniors, collecting 10 goals and 18 points in seven games.
Sixth round (No. 165): Noah Laberge, D, Acadie-Bathurst (Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League)
Another slick puck mover, the 6-1, 181-pound Laberge is a strong skater who can generate offense (12 goals, 35 points in 63 games for Patrice Bergeron's old junior club). He is solid defensively and won't leave his partner — or goalie — out to dry.

Chris Russo rants how Yankees messed up not hiring Terry Francona in Aaron Boone takedown

Instead of hiring a 2003 ALCS hero as their manager, Chris 'Mad Dog' Russo believes the Yankees should have tapped into one of the key figures from the 2004 edition. Russo, the ex-WFAN host now on SiriusXM and ESPN, ranted on 'The Show' podcast with The Post's Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman how the Yankees should have hired Terry Francona this winter instead of extending Aaron Boone, who he barely sees as a top-10 manager. 'You're telling me that Boone is a better manager than Terry Francona? Are you freaking crazy? How did Francona end up with the Reds?' Russo said in the episode published Tuesday. 'Did the Yankees put a call in to see if Francona — 'Hey, Terry, we had a bad World Series, our manager killed us in Game 1.' He killed them in Game 1 guys, that was awful. And Francona ends up in Cincinnati. Everybody loves Boone and he's not a bad manager, but he's been there a long time with one World Series win and, in my opinion, seven or eight managers are better than he is. ' Russo's takes comes a time while the Yankees are scuffling and trying to hold on for dear life in the AL playoff race and many fans are pointing fingers at Boone and general manager Brian Cashman. This is Boone's eighth season on the job and the Yankees have won one pennant and one World Series game in that time, with their summer malaises becoming routine. Russo clearly believes the manager is part of the problem, and he listed seven skippers he believes are better than Boone: Francona, Boston's Alex Cora, Texas' Bruce Bochy, the Dodgers' Dave Roberts, Arizona's Tory Luvullo, Detroit's A.J. Hinch and the Cubs' Craig Counsell, although he said Boone is only 'probably not better' than him due to Counsell's 'spotty postseason.' 'How do the Yankees have a manager who's the eighth-best — and now, you guys might think he's higher than I, but I think there's eight managers in this sport better than freaking Boond,' Russo told Sherman and Heyman. 'I mean, I'm not going to give you (Brian) Snitker because he's old, but he won a World Championship too. Hinch, Francona, Bochy, Roberts, Luvullo, Cora, there's a lot of managers in this sport who are better than Boone. He is barely in the top 10. These are the New York Yankees.' 3 Aaron Boone is feeling the heat as the Yankee scuffle. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST 3 Terry Francona has the Reds closing in on the Mets in the NL playoff race. AP Francona, 66, led Boston to two championships in 2004 and 2007, and has the upstart Reds just two games back of the Mets in the NL playoffs race. He's generally considered one of the game's better managers, especially after a strong run with Cleveland despite limited payrolls. Access the Yankees beat like never before Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Greg Joyce about the inside buzz on the Yankees. Try it free One major issue, though, with Russo's idea is that the timeline and logistics for the Yankees to have hired Francona to replace Boone this offseason would have not lined up. Cincinnati hired Francona on Oct. 7, 2024, while the Yankees did not finish their season until their Game 5 World Series debacle against the Dodgers on Oct. 30. Boone still had one year left on his deal before the Yankees gave him a two-year extension in February through the 2027 season. Yankees' brass has talked highly of Boone — seemingly to the fans' chagrin — and even said he believes there would be a 'feeding frenzy' if he became a free agent. He also has the support of team captain Aaron Judge. 3 Chris Russo (c) with Joel Sherman (top left) and Jon Heyman (bottom left). @nypostsports/YouTube 'I think the No. 1 thing is the care and passion he has for everybody in this room,' Judge said after the extension. 'It doesn't matter if you're first year in here in big league camp or 15-year vet getting a chance to come over and play for the Yankees, he's going to make you feel like you're the most important person in the room. When you do that, it equals a lot of wins when you feel comfortable.' For all the good will Boone has accumulated with Cashman and owner Hal Steinbrenner, though, the calculus could change if the Yankees miss the playoffs for the second time in three years. The Bronx Bombers only lead the Guardians by one game for the final AL wild-card spot and poor fundamentals have plagued them as a huge AL East lead has swung into a six-game hole behind the Blue Jays. For a team with championship aspirations, not making the dance two times in three years when 40 percent of the league makes the playoffs is a tough look.

Is Texas becoming new Alabama? The Athletic says Longhorns becoming CFB's premier program

For over a decade, the Alabama Crimson Tide ruled college football. Coach Nick Saban seemingly got all the best players en route to an astounding six national championships. But the college football power structure always shifts eventually. Has Texas replaced Alabama on top of college football's highest perch? The Athletic says the Longhorns have. Texas' first year in the SEC was kind of a watershed moment for Texas coach Steve Sarkisian and the program he's building in Austin. Only Georgia prevented Texas from running through the league last year. A conference that was supposed to humble the Longhorns made them stronger. Now, armed with one of the best quarterback recruits of all time, Sark looks to complete the mission at UT and win the national championship ... either this year or next. But with a title or not, it appears to Ralph D. Russo of The Athletic that Texas is the new CFB super power. "Texas is becoming the new Alabama. No, that doesn't mean the Longhorns are going to rattle off a half-dozen titles in the next decade. But this is the season Texas puts its staying power on display. There is always another draft pick. There is always another All-American. The talent conveyor belt is fully operational — and well-funded. The days of stumbling as a 12-point favorite at home appear to be over. Much like Kirby Smart did when he left Saban and Alabama to take over at Georgia, Sarkisian implemented the Bama blueprint at a school with more resources and easier access to talent than Saban's old school, building a program to rival the Tide." - Ralph D. Russo of The Athletic After serving as Saban's offensive coordinator, Sark has brought the Saban way to Texas. No one could evolve with the changing climate in college football better than Saban for over a decade. Much of Texas' success can be attributed to how Texas implements NIL. It's just just having money. Texas leads the nation in managing NIL. The Texas One Fund has at least 20 sponsorship partners, including Texas-based Benchmark Bank. 'The area to differentiate any university is, how many outside — call it true NIL or whatever you want to call it — how many of those opportunities are out there for student-athletes? And having the best model not only is good for your university and you can recruit better and win, but it's also good for kids to get opportunities. So our plan is to continue on that whole for-profit space, to get as many opportunities as we can for our student-athletes in the for-profit brand space.' - Patrick 'Wheels' Smith, president of Texas One Fund The Saban way also turns players that might think they've "made it" by getting a scholarship and NIL funds to play at a program like Texas into players obsessed with winning that hate losing. 'Excellence is exhausting, but it's worth it. (The players) see the success of their peers, and they're like, I want that, you know? The Outland trophies, the Thorpe awards, the All-Americans, the first-round picks, the draft picks, the College Football Playoffs. The on-the-cusp-of-a-national-championship. I want that. So how do I get there? It's pretty simple. The only thing I just keep looking for is, is there a complacency? Because complacency is, that'll get you. And we're fortunate. We've got no room to be complacent, because we haven't won the thing yet, you know?' - Texas coach Steve Sarkisian To put the crown jewel on his achievement in Austin, Sark needs to win a title. Based on its first preseason No. 1 ranking in program history, it could happen this year. Follow us on X/Twitter at @LonghornsWire.
