Lincoln Crown Court told alleged victim made up kidnap plot

BBC News17-07-2025
A man accused of attempting to kidnap the husband of his girlfriend told a jury he believed the alleged victim had made it up.Daniel Algar, 41, from Spalding, is on trial at Lincoln Crown Court alongside Lucy Leggate, 35, from Fishtoft, near Boston. They both deny attempting to kidnap Mrs Leggate's husband, Gary Leggate, on 22 September 2022. Prosecutors claimed a masked Mr Algar tried to hijack Mr Leggate after hiding in his car as he left work. Mrs Leggate, a mother-of-four, chose not to enter the witness box when it was her turn to give evidence.
The jury previously heard Mr Leggate was driving home when a "masked man" appeared in the back seat of his vehicle.A witness described how the car stopped suddenly on the wrong side of the road before Mr Leggate and a man wearing a mask both got out of the vehicle. The man "appeared to run after" Mr Leggate before changing direction, the court was told.Giving evidence, Mr Algar claimed Mr Leggate plotted a "vendetta" against him because of the affair he was having with his wife. When asked if he believed Mr Leggate had made the kidnapping up and that nothing had happened, Mr Algar replied: "Yes, I believe so."But after being shown CCTV footage from the car park at Mr Leggate's workplace, Mr Algar accepted it did appear to show another person getting into his vehicle. He also conceded the boots worn by the hooded figure in the car park appeared to be similar to his work boots. But Mr Algar insisted the person shown in the footage had different facial features to him. When asked if Mr Leggate had done a good job in finding someone to look like him, Mr Algar replied: "It would appear so."The prosecution allege Mrs Leggate helped Mr Algar by providing a spare key fob to her husband's car and disclosing the time he left work. The trial continues.

Former Irish sports figure accused of historical sexual abuse offences sent forward for trial

A former Irish sports figure, accused of historical sex abuse offences, was on Tuesday served with a book of evidence and sent forward for trial to the Central Criminal Court. The man, who cannot be named due to the nature of the charges, is in his 70s and faces 79 allegations relating to the sexual abuse of four girls in Ireland during the 1970s and 1980s. Advertisement Judge Michele Finan at Dublin District Court granted a return for trial order at the request of State solicitor Rory Staines. He told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) consented to being sent forward on indictment on the 79 charges in the book of evidence served by Garda Sergeant Amy Kelly. They include 78 counts of indecent assault and one count of attempted rape. The offences allegedly occurred at various locations in Co Dublin, including Dún Laoghaire, Killiney, and Blackrock, between 1971 and 1981. Advertisement At the time, the girls were minors aged between eight and 15. The man was extradited from the US last week. Judge Finan notified the man that he must inform the prosecution within 14 days if he intends to use an alibi in his trial. She also ordered investigating gardaí to provide copies of interview videos to the defence and told the accused that his lawyer would explain it to him later. Advertisement The man, who has not yet entered a plea, was remanded in continuing custody pending trial with no bail application made. Legal aid has been granted, with the defence stating that he is not working and has no assets. The judge noted that there was no Garda objection, and she agreed to a request by his solicitor, Tracy Horan, that it would include senior and junior counsel representation. The date for his next hearing before the Central Criminal Court has yet to be set but will be held the next legal term, commencing in October. Advertisement Dressed in a grey tracksuit and black runners, the man sat silently in a wheelchair and spoke only to consult with his solicitor, who asked that he get dental attention in custody, because he still had no dentures and "is not able to eat solid foods". Following extradition proceedings at the request of the Irish authorities, he was arrested at Terminal 2, Dublin Airport on the morning of July 22nd. Gardaí charged him at the instruction of the DPP. He faces 41 counts of indecent assault and one for attempted rape of one of the complainants, 34 counts of indecent assault of another female, two counts of indecent assault of another complainant, and one charge of indecent assault of the fourth. Advertisement The offences are contrary to Common Law. At his first hearing, a few hours after his arrest, the defence solicitor had informed the judge that her client required medical assistance in custody because he had no dentures or hearing aid, as they had not been brought over from the United States. The judge had noted this information and agreed to add that he should urgently get dentures and a hearing aid in custody. When the proceedings resumed yesterday/today, she heard that the man still had no dentures and recommended that he get the appropriate treatment.

Former West Ham star Dimitri Payet 'is set to go to trial in Brazil' after being accused of forcing ex-mistress to 'film bizarre sex acts' and 'drink her own urine'

Ex-Premier League star Dimitri Payet will reportedly be placed on trial in Brazil after being charged with 'psychological violence' against his former mistress Larissa Natalya Ferrari. The case against the former West Ham player, 38, was initially dismissed by prosecutors in Rio de Janeiro. Payet, however, was then indicted following an appeal last month. Brazilian newspaper Globo reported that the Rio de Janeiro Court last Friday accepted the Public Prosecutor's Office's complaint, with Payet now set to go on trial. Payet's defence lawyer Sheila Lustoza said reportedly said she disagrees with the decision, but respects it and stressed it was a natural part of the process. 'From this point onwards, however, the defence will be granted the right to present its version of the facts with all the evidence gathered so far,' a statement read. 'Therefore, we are confident that after analysing all the material and the numerous contradictions found, the accusatory version will be deconstructed.' Ferrari's lawyers said they welcomed the decision by the city's Domestic Violence Court in accepting the complaint. 'We received the recent decision with confidence in the institutions responsible for investigating the facts and holding the person under investigation accountable, recognising it as an important step forward in the search for the truth and reparation for the damages suffered by the victim. 'The Judiciary's position reaffirms the authorities' commitment to the seriousness of the events and their firm determination to curb practices that violate women's dignity, regardless of the social position or public visibility of the person under investigation. 'We reiterate our commitment to remain firm in the uncompromising defense of our client's rights, certain that justice will prevail.' Earlier this year, Ferrari alleged that she was forced to drink her own urine and lick the floor during a turbulent seven-month affair. Last month, Brazilian outlet G1 claimed to have obtained a document with details of the case in which the lawyer attested to suffering from borderline personality disorder, believing Payet - whose contract with Rio de Janeiro-based Vasco da Gama was terminated 10 days ago - took advantage of her condition. 'Dimitri knew about my passion and psychological problems, using this against me,' she is reported to have said by G1. 'Dimitri convinced me to put my head in the trash, in the toilet, made me drink my own urine and other sexual bizarre acts.' The Frenchman was reportedly heard at the Women's Assistance Police Station where he admitted to having a relationship with Ferrari but insisted every act during their union was consensual. Furthermore, Payet, who left his wife of almost 20 years Ludivine and their four children back in his homeland during his time in Brazil, was alleged to have admitted to the acts but maintained that they were consensual and proposed by Ferrari. G1's report mentioned an encounter when Ferrari 'requested slaps during sexual intercourse' and as a result, developed marks on her body. The Frenchman also reportedly claimed that the two used wooden chairs during sexual intercourse, and that, due to Ferrari's light skin, any pressure would lead to marks. It followed Ferrari's impassioned public plea for 'justice', in a statement in which she claimed to have been 'humiliated' by the 38-cap former Les Blues star. 'I want justice because he abused my psychological vulnerability to gain sexual advantage,' she told AFP. 'He demanded proof of love from me, which consisted of humiliation. 'I recorded videos in which I drank my urine, drank water from the toilet bowl, and licked the floor. I'm a lawyer, I would never have made such serious complaints lightly.' It was claimed that Payet refused Ferrari's desire to continue this relationship in France, on the condition he pay her expenses, as his time in the country approached its end. The 38-year-old star left his wife of almost 20 years (Ludivine) and their four kids back home According to the player, the lawyer's behaviour changed from then on, leading to her threatening to 'expose his secrets' if he did not respond within four hours of her birthday message. Payet's lawyer Lustoza told G1: 'It is regrettable that confidential records were leaked, but the case reveals with evidence something that is very clear: a woman exercising her freedom and will, as it should be, contrary to what has been publicly narrated up until now. The defense is confident that the truth that is proven by documents will demonstrate these facts.' Payet is widely regarded as one of West Ham's most talented players this century but left under a cloud to re-join Marseille after just 18 months in 2017. He stays at the Stade Velodrome for six-and-a-half years before moving to Brazil in 2023. In March, Larissa revealed that they had had a seven-month affair. She wrote in a lengthy statement: 'One thing I want to make clear is that it was never about money. There was no need for it. 'There's not much I can say because there's no explanation or anything to justify it. 'But one thing I want to make extremely clear is that it was never for money, not before, not now. In fact, the last time I went to Rio, I went by bus.' Larissa, who is a mother of two, also claimed that she only got physically involved with the midfielder following her divorce from her ex-husband.
