Woman, 25, killed and two people injured as car hit pedestrians
A 25-year-old woman has been killed and two other members of her family are seriously injured after a car hit pedestrians outside a leisure centre.
The incident outside Crawley Leisure Park in West Sussex involved a grey BMW 3 Series and it occurred at about 8.36pm on Saturday, Sussex Police said.
The deceased woman's 12-year-old sister and their cousin, a 19-year-old woman, were taken to hospital and are being treated for their injuries.
All of the pedestrians are from the local area.
A 33-year-old man from Crawley was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drugs, and remains in police custody.
Chief Inspector James Davidson said: 'Our thoughts are with the victims' family at this difficult time and we ask that the public respect their right to privacy.
'I'd like to reassure the community that we swiftly arrested a suspect in connection with this tragic incident, and our inquiries are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances.
'The collision occurred in London Road, Crawley, immediately outside the leisure park.
'This is a well populated area and we are urging anyone who saw what happened or captured any relevant mobile, dashcam or CCTV footage to please come forward.'

The woman reported waking up in a car, which she thought was a taxi, to find a man sexually assaulting her. She had gotten into the car earlier that night, to travel from Brighton to Hove. The victim escaped at around 3am and called 999 to report being assaulted by a man in latex gloves and a Covid mask. Head was also found guilty of assaulting a 19-year-old woman he picked up near Hove Park. She was pulled into bushes where the predator attempted to rape her, after the victim initially took a lift from him. The two attacks took place in the early hours of August 19 and November 18, 2022. Detective Constable Elliott Lander from the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team said: 'Graham Head has twice tried to evade justice for his despicable crimes, and now twice been convicted by separate juries. 'His refusal to accept responsibility for his offending has forced his victims to relive the traumatic attacks carried out by him. The impact on them and their families cannot be overstated, and I commend all involved for their strength and courage in such challenging circumstances. 'Head will remain in prison, as he has throughout this process, as we await resentencing.' One of Head's victims, a 25-year-old woman, tragically passed away last year. Her heartbroken mum released the following emotional statement: "Regardless of the outcome of this trial and independently of the jury's verdicts on each of the charges that Graham Head has just faced, I want to say a few words on behalf of my daughter. "My (only) daughter tragically died in late 2024 – a couple days after being informed by the CPS that Graham Head had been successful in appealing his conviction for kidnap of my daughter and for causing serious sexual harm to her and to another even younger female victim. "I feel strongly that I need to protect the anonymity of my own and my daughter's friends and the families and friends of Graham Head's victims. "However, I want to recognise and say my own deep thanks for the strong and compassionate support that my daughter, myself, and our family have received from the Police, the CPS, the witness service, and the Courts over the past two years. "This retrial process has been tremendously difficult and a huge strain for all of us; we're glad it is now over. "I'm especially grateful for the attuned support of the Sexual Offences Investigation Team (SOIT) and the Independent Sexual Violence Advocacy (ISVA) service who supported my daughter every step of the way through the challenges of bringing this man to justice on both trials. "Looking to my family's future following my daughter's death, my biggest hope is that other families can now hopefully feel much safer knowing that this dangerous man is no longer able to predate and attack any other vulnerable young local woman thanks to his deserved (re)conviction for these appalling offences. Bognor councillor calls for police action over Swastika vandalism
A town councillor has called on Sussex Police to "take more action" after Swastikas were drawn on and carved into more than 50 pieces of furniture in a Wells, of Bognor Regis Town Council, said the vandalism in Hotham Park was "horrendous", and claimed it was the latest in a spate of incidents in the added that the town faced a "downward spiral" unless there was a crackdown on Police said it had increased patrols and engagement in the area, and was working to gather evidence, catch offenders and address the underlying issues. "We have our problems in Bognor, but this is more of a general society issue," Mr Wells told BBC Radio said the town council had set up the new Town Action Group, which will work with partners including Sussex Police to tackle some of the Mr Wells added: "We want Sussex Police to take more action. We know their finances and resources are tight, but we've got to start addressing this problem otherwise we're on a downward spiral."Ch Insp Will Keating-Jones said: "We understand the impact crime and anti-social behaviour has on Bognor's residents and businesses, and have introduced a range of new measures with our partners."He said that as well as working with the action group, police would be introducing a specialist mobile vehicle at areas of increased crime or anti-social behaviour, "a method that has had proven success across the county", he with information about the vandalism in Hotham Park is urged to contact police.

Father and son jailed after inventing story over crash which seriously injured woman
A father and son have both been jailed after inventing a story over a crash which left a woman seriously injured in Buckley-Barber, 19, was driving at high speeds and 'showing off' when he overturned his car into a watery ditch in Pevensey in April 2023. A female passenger in the car suffered serious injuries. Instead of calling the emergency services, the then 17-year-old called his father, Jason Barber. Barber, 46, drove his son home first before taking the woman to hospital. While in the car, the woman could hear the father and son inventing a story, claiming the car had been forced off the road to avoid hitting an animal. After the woman was brought into A&E at Eastbourne District General Hospital, staff reported the crash to police. Officers later went to Barber's address, but he told officers he didn't know where his son was. At the scene of the crash, beer cans were recovered from around the Ford Escort, and Buckley-Barber had been with friends at a party earlier in the night. The teenager was not found that night, and only called police 12 hours later where he repeated the made-up story. Phones were seized from the father and son, and revealed that Barber sent a text message to a friend, claiming he 'hid' his son from police on the night they were looking for him. Mobile phone footage also showed Buckley-Barber's "reckless" driving shortly before the crash. Inspector Vicki Rees, Sussex Police Luic Buckley-Barber, 19, of Maresfield Drive, Pevensey, pleaded guilty to causing serious injuries by dangerous driving and was sentenced to one year and four months in prison, and was disqualified from driving for three years. Jason Barber, 46, of the same address, pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice and was sentenced to two years and three months in prison. Speaking after the case, PC Jessica Crump from the Roads Policing Unit said: 'The father and son showed no regard for the victim's welfare that night, and only looked out for their own interests. 'Dangerous driving is one of the fatal five offences that cause deaths and injuries on our roads. 'Luic decided to drive dangerously behind the wheel, with another person's life in his hands. He had not maintained his vehicle in a good state of repair, and was extremely lucky he did not cause a fatality that night."
