Visitors arrive in London uncertain if their Air Canada tickets will get them back home
Travellers arriving at London's airport ahead of a strike that would ground all Air Canada and Rouge flights are questioning whether their return trip will be as trouble free. The airline cancelled several dozen flights on Thursday and said 500 more would be grounded by Friday evening, affecting more than 100,000 customers. "I have to look for another way home," James Davidson, a passenger from Las Vegas said as he collected his bags before heading to visit family in Woodstock. "I've got a surgery scheduled for when I get back, and I'm also the primary care individual for my wife." "I've got everything set up for two weeks but after that even my medications will run out, as well," Davidson said. The Canadian Union for Public Employees (CUPE) represents more than 10,000 Air Canada flight attendants and is in a strike position after contract negotiations reached an "impasse" earlier this week. Air Canada subsequently issued a lock-out notice, saying approximately 130,000 customers per day could be affected by a labour disruption. The situation in London There are four Air Canada flights between London and Toronto running daily in each direction, but they're operated by Jazz, a partner airline to the main carrier. Airport C.E.O. Scott McFadzean said he's been assured it will be business as usual for those regional flights with none being grounded because of the strike. "I'm an optimist," McFadzean admitted, "I'm hoping they get through to a deal before the strike action actually takes effect, but we'll have to see what the next few days bring." He advises travellers leaving London to make connections to other destinations, to stay close to their ticket and the airline's website, in case alternative plans need to be made, Other travellers are in less dire situations, like Anne-Marie Mulhall, who flew from Prince Rupert, B.C. to look after a family member. If her return is delayed, she said she'll stay on the couch a while longer. "I'm in a good spot where I can do that. Not everybody can do that," Mulhall said.

Pātea school principal remembers six-year-old killed in boating accident
By Maisie Arnold-Brown Six-year-old Zane loved school and cared deeply for his friends and teachers, according to his principal at Pātea Area School, James Davidson. Photo: Supplied/Pātea Area School A six-year-old boy, who died in a boating accident in Pātea, is remembered as a "boy filled with aroha", according to his school principal. Two people died after a boat capsized off the coast of Taranaki on Sunday. Stuff has reported his stepmother also died, when the boat was swamped by a wave, and his father - the boat's skipper - was the sole survivor. Pātea Area School principal James Davidson said Zane Milham loved school. "Everyone who met Zane instantly fell in love with his cheeky grin and zest for life," Davidson said. "He cared deeply for his friends and those around him," he said. "He showed genuine affection for his teachers and support staff, always offering a cheerful wave or a friendly greeting. "His joy was truly infectious." He said Zane never missed a day of school, rain or shine, and was always eager and excited to learn. "On weekends and after school, he could often be seen riding his trike around the grounds, proudly knocking on windows to show off the skids he had been practising," Davidson said.
