Invest in the basics
An essential in my kitchen at home is a thick wooden chopping board which lives on my counter.
You don't want to be using an awful glass one or plastic, which risks getting microplastics into your food.
It doesn't have to be wildly expensive, just get yourself down to TK Maxx, you'll likely find one for less than £15.
Another thing you should be thinking about is having at least one good-quality knife in your drawer. I like the Victorinox brand, which is quite easy to find and really versatile. You can use them for anything from veg to meat and fish.
I can cook with any sort of pot or pan in any kitchen, that doesn't bother me. It's the basic utensils for cutting and prepping that make a difference.
Set yourself up with a good board and knife, and you're pretty much good to go.
Spice it up
Quite often, when I go to visit older friends and family and take a look through their spice rack, I'll find jars that are at least 10 to 20 years old. They sit there looking nice, but no one actually touches them.
One of the most valuable things you can do to improve your cooking is to learn a little more about the spices you're using and how to get more out of them.
Smoked paprika in particular is a favourite of mine. I use it on almost everything.
Have a quick Google and find out how to put together spice mixes. Then, when you next stock up on spices, spend a quick five minutes weighing them out and combining them in a jar to sit next to your stove.
Moroccan spice, Chinese spice or jerk seasoning are all good ones to start with.
It encourages you to get more creative with your cooking. I really enjoy a wee dash of Moroccan spice on my eggs in the morning to spice things up, for example.
Keep these dairy products in the fridge
I like to keep a bit of natural yoghurt or creme fraiche in my fridge, not for eating on its own, but for using alongside my pre-prepared spices.
Rub a few spoonfuls onto chicken, lamb or beef and then the spices will stick to it much better before pan frying or roasting. Little things like that add so much flavour.
Never skip this important step
This might sound like a really obvious one, but it is so important to preheat your oven.
A lot of people will skip that step and whack their food in straight away. Even if you're cooking a cheap supermarket pizza, it will taste so much better if the oven has been allowed to get super hot first.

Fresh is best
I know it seems a lot easier to pick up a plastic bottle of pre-made salad dressing or vinaigrette from the shop as we head into BBQ season, but I promise you, making your own will make such a huge difference.
Vinaigrettes, in particular, are really easy to make. Just one part vinegar, three parts oil and then whatever your favourite herbs or seasonings are. A squeeze of mustard, some honey, whatever you like. Just stick it all into a jar and give it a shake.
Build a collection of kitchen staples
It probably sounds like it will be really expensive to invest in all of these new ingredients, but it's something you can build up slowly.
When you do your weekly shop, consider buying something new, like a nice apple cider vinegar or a new spice to experiment with.
A homemade fajita mix ends up costing about a tenth of the price and can be made exactly how you like it when you have all the right bits in. You don't have to rely on pre-made packets!

Clean as you go
Another thing I think makes me far more productive in my home kitchen is making sure to clean as I go.
Once you're done with that lovely wooden chopping board, give it a wipe and get it back on the counter.
Finished with that bowl? Get it in the dishwasher straight away.
Especially when you're cooking for other people, a messy kitchen soon becomes really stressful.
Keep things clean and clear, stick some music on and make sure you're actually enjoying what you're doing.
Get yourself this nifty piece of kit
One of my absolute kitchen essentials is a julienne peeler, which you'll find for around £3 on Amazon.
It peels veggies on one side, and the other slices them into really thin strips that are perfect for things like coleslaw.
Cabbage, carrot, onion, courgette, it's all so much easier to prep with this wee thing.
It's also far more budget-friendly than the electric processors or chopping gadgets you see advertised on TV.
Think ahead with yellow sticker buys
Even though my wife and I like to plan ahead for a week of cooking, we're a sucker for yellow sticker deals.
If you see something in the reduced section that you think you can stretch a few meals out of, just go ahead and pick it up.
Get the slow cooker out at home and turn it into a stew that can be frozen for a rainy day.

Before cleaning your decking, make sure to remove all furniture, plant pots and accessories from your decking, and then give it a sweep to remove any loose debris. Then, mix half of white vinegar with one quarter of a cup of baking powder and three litres of water. Use a soft brush to rub the vinegar mixture into the patio, then make sure to rinse it thoroughly afterwards. Helen warned: "Vinegar is a natural and effective cleaner, but it contains acetic acid, which can stain your deck if left on the surface too long." Shayna's DIY Privacy Fence: Simple and Effective The expert revealed that to make sure your decking looks in good condition all year round, regular maintenance is essential. "Simple maintenance like brushing away fallen leaves, using pot feet for air circulation, placing covers over outdoor furniture and ensuring good drainage around the deck area can also help reduce long-term wear and weather damage", Helen said. The expert added that timber decking requires a little more upkeep than other types of decking so its a good idea to apply a sealant or decking oil once a year. And if your decking is covered in mould, social media users recently revealed another budget friendly hack to get it sparkling. How to clean green algae off decking Is your decking covered in green algae or moss? The experts at Ronseal have shared their guide to cleaning your decking after a wet and warm winter. You'll need: A wire brush Decking cleaner A pressure washer or hose Clear the decking Clear your decking and grab a broom - give it decking a good sweep to dislodge any dirt. Choose your cleaner Some cleaners are better at tackling certain jobs than others, so you need to consider what it is you want the cleaner to do. British couple try Chinese takeaway in America and spot one big difference

More info A British couple, James and Siana, recently tried Chinese takeaway in America for the first time and noticed a significant difference. In the UK, ordering 'a Chinese' is a beloved tradition, with favourites such as egg fried rice, chow mein, and sweet and sour chicken. Chinese takeaways are dotted all over the UK and are a popular choice for relaxed get-togethers with family or friends. For some families, getting a Chinese takeaway for dinner is a treat, while for others it's a convenient option when they don't feel like cooking. Americans also enjoy Chinese takeaways, and this British couple decided to document their experience of trying one in the US on TikTok. James mentioned that a Chinese takeaway "is normally very good in Britain", so they were "intrigued" to see how it compares in the US. Siana started by opening a "stunning" container of broccoli beef, noting that it "actually smells really good," reports the Mirror. Next up was orange chicken. James confessed that he had never tried this dish before in the UK, and Siana admitted she hadn't heard of it either but knew it's a "big thing" in the US. Upon opening the container, James took a whiff of the chicken and exclaimed: "Oh it smells amazing." Siana excitedly chimed in: "Ooh yum, that smells like sweet and sour chicken." Digging into the chicken fried rice, the pair were unanimous in their approval, with Siana commenting it was "just your typical fried rice" and akin to that served in the UK. To clear up confusion over egg rolls versus spring rolls, The Food Network has differentiated the two on its website, noting that egg rolls are an American invention, while spring rolls have their origins in China. Egg rolls are known for their thicker skin, utilising a "wonton or thick, yeast dough wrapper", in contrast to spring rolls which boast a "more delicate, thin skin and use a spring roll wrapper." When it comes to what's inside, egg rolls are usually packed with "typically contain cabbage and meat", whereas spring rolls tend to be "traditionally vegetarian or vegan", although there are versions that feature meat or seafood.

A cook has shared a simple trick that will tell you if a bottle of soy sauce is of good quality or not – and you don't even need to open it to find out Soy sauce is a staple in many of our kitchens. Its complex, umami-rich profile makes it a staple in various cuisines, especially in East and Southeast Asia. The food product comes in countless different varieties – so which one should you pick up next time you're at the supermarket. To assist, a cook named Paul has revealed his straightforward trick. On TikTok, he shared: "Quick hack to tell if soy sauce is actually good before you even buy it. I discovered this trick while researching how soy sauce is actually produced - and it's surprisingly simple. "Just shake the bottle. If bubbles form and linger, that's a positive sign. It indicates more soy beans and excellent fermentation. No foam, that usually means shortcuts." Paul also elaborated in the video's caption, writing: "Cheaper sauces usually watered down and rushed - seen by bubbles that disappear quickly. Good cooking starts with good ingredients." People were very appreciative of the advice and left their thoughts in the comments section. One wrote: "Love this. I've wondered about this for so long." Another shared their own tip, writing: "If you can't pronounce the name of the brand, or if the text on the package is written in more Chinese than English, it's going to be good." Absolutely no caramel colouring and no taste enhancers." More ways to check soy sauce quality 1. Check the ingredients High-quality soy sauce should contain minimal ingredients. These are typically water, soybeans (or soy concentrate), wheat, and salt. Lower quality products may include added sugars, artificial preservatives, flavour enhancers (like MSG), or caramel colour. Avoid soy sauce labeled as 'hydrolysed vegetable protein' or 'chemical soy sauce,' which is typically cheaper and made artificially. 2. Fermentation process High-quality soy sauce is made through traditional fermentation, often over several months to years. This process gives the sauce a deep, complex flavour. Low-quality soy sauces are chemically manufactured, which speeds up production at the cost of flavour. Look for the words naturally brewed or traditionally brewed on the label. 3.
