'Nothing left to occupy': Palestinians react to Netanyahu's Gaza plan

The Guardiana day ago
Palestinians in Gaza expressed fear, frustration and exhaustion on Thursday after the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said he wants Israel to take military control of the entire Gaza Strip.
Those displaced by the fighting offered their opinions hours after Netanyahu told Fox News that Israel intended to take over the entire territory for security purposes but did not plan to govern it long-term. He said the aim would be to eventually hand over control to Arab forces, though he gave no specifics over what that could entail

Donald Trump ally criticises Keir Starmer's leadership

Mike Huckabee, the US ambassador to Israel, strongly criticised Sir Keir Starmer, suggesting the UK would be speaking German if he had been Prime Minister during the Second World War, following Starmer's criticism of Israel's Gaza plans. Huckabee's remarks were a direct response to Sir Keir's statement that Israel's decision to take control of Gaza City was "wrong" and would not help end the conflict or secure hostage release. JD Vance, a US vice-president, noted a "disagreement" between the US and UK on achieving Middle East objectives, stating there are no plans to recognise a Palestinian state. Israel's prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu 's office outlined new military principles for Gaza, including demilitarisation, Israeli security control, and an alternative civil administration. Sir Keir Starmer has pledged to recognise a Palestinian state by September unless Israel meets conditions, such as a ceasefire and no West Bank annexations, a stance also echoed by UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy and other allied foreign ministers who rejected Israel's plans.

Russia condemns Israel's plan to expand Gaza operation

MOSCOW, Aug 9 (Reuters) - Russia condemns and rejects Israel's plan to expand its military operation in the Gaza Strip, Russia's Foreign Ministry said on Saturday. "The implementation of such decisions and plans, which provoke condemnation and rejection, is fraught with the risk of exacerbating the already extremely dramatic situation in the Palestinian enclave, which has all the hallmarks of a humanitarian catastrophe," the ministry said in a statement.

Explosion kills six members of army in southern Lebanon

BEIRUT, Aug 9 (Reuters) - The Lebanese army said on Saturday that six soldiers were killed and others wounded in an explosion while they were inspecting a weapons depot and dismantling its contents in the southern city of Tyre. An investigation was underway to determine the cause of the blast, the army added in a statement. Security sources told Reuters that the explosion was caused by "remnants of the Israeli war" in the coastal city. Israel dealt major blows to Lebanon's militant group Hezbollah in an offensive last year - the climax of a conflict that began in October 2023 when the group opened fire at Israeli positions on the frontier in support of its Palestinian ally Hamas at the start of the Gaza war. A U.S.-brokered ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel in November ended that conflict, called on Lebanon to confiscate all "unauthorized" weapons across the country and said Israel would stop offensive operations against Lebanese targets.
