Gen Z's blank stare is the internet's latest obsession
TikTokers say there's a name for that — the 'Gen Z stare.'
Users on the platform say it refers to the vacant stare young people might give in response to small talk, simple customer service questions or workplace inquiries. Hypothetical skits on the platform mocking Gen Z responses are going viral.
It's sparking a broader conversation about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, chronic technology use, and if Gen Z (the cohort born between 1997 and 2012) lacks communication skills in the workplace and social settings.
What is the Gen Z stare?
The Gen Z stare is a term used to refer to the blank, expressionless look some say is characteristic of young people's interactions. It might manifest as an awkward encounter with a barista or a lack of verbal response from a coworker.
Most of the viral skits portray the stare in customer service interactions, where a Gen Z cashier or customer responds with a blank, wordless stare where small talk would usually fill the void, sometimes as a result of a senseless questions.
"It's literally just exhausted teenagers working part time trying to put up with school while paying bills,' one person commented under a skit with 2.3 million views from TikToker Mark Gaetano, known on the platform as Snarky Marky. 'The Gen Z stare is usually just us being in complete disbelief of what we're witnessing,' says another.
But commenters from other generations argued back that the stare goes beyond the typical customer service blank face.
'We're talking about the stare when anyone tries to have just a normal human interaction with you, like in the flesh, and you guys freeze,' one TikToker posted, "I can't even count to you how many times I've tried to say hi to neighbors walking by that are like in their teens and they just look at you like they just saw a ghost."

Social skills shaped by 24/7 technology and the pandemic
The videos have sparked intergenerational discourse. Some Gen Zers defended the stare as a response to illogical questions from customers, while others acknowledged it as a reflection of anxiety in social interactions.
And it's possible the stare is the result of Gen Z's social development being hindered during the pandemic. Online school and social distancing during lockdowns influenced how people of all ages navigated in-person interactions and awkward social situations.
Plus, nearly half of teens say they're online constantly, according to 2024 data from the Pew Research Center.
Gen Z, nicknamed 'the anxious generation' by social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, is more anxious and isolated than older generations. Former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek H. Murthy sounded the alarm on loneliness during his term, explaining in a report that young adults are almost twice as likely to report feeling lonely than those older than 65.
There are jokes about every generation's communication skills, from jabs about the millennial pause to boomers' struggles to understand emojis. Whether it's rooted in pandemic-induced social anxiety or changing workplace norms, it's a sign of how young people are engaging with the world around them.

Rev. John MacArthur, influential evangelical pastor of Grace Community Church, dies at 86
The Rev. John MacArthur, among the country's most influential evangelical pastors with a prolific media reach — and whose San Fernando Valley megachurch became the face of religious resistance to California's COVID-19 public health orders — died Monday. He was 86. MacArthur's death was announced on the website of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley. He had recently contacted pneumonia, according to the church. Franklin Graham, president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Assn., paid tribute to MacArthur on social media, calling him one of 'America's great Bible teachers.' 'He could get more out of a Bible verse than anyone I've ever known,' wrote Graham on X. 'His voice will be greatly missed.' Though based in Los Angeles — where his faithful filled a 3,500-seat auditorium twice every Sunday for his sermons — MacArthur reached millions of people internationally through his radio and television programs and books, and guided the lives of countless young theologians as president of the Master's University and adjoining seminary in Santa Clarita. He was known for his fundamentalist biblical standards, strictly focusing on the writings of the Scriptures and eschewing sermons that touched on more modern themes. Grace Community Church said in a statement on its website this week that his 'ministry was an unwavering commitment to declare God's truth, and Pastor John preached the Word in season and out of season. Even in recent years, though beset with health challenges, he persisted in teaching, leading, and investing in the ministries the Lord had entrusted to him.' From a family with a long line of pastors, MacArthur said he was always religious and described how a car accident in Alabama that left him in excruciating pain helped push him to the pulpit. As a freshman college student in South Carolina, he was sent for treatment to California, where doctors had to remove road asphalt from his severally damaged back. 'I had to lie in my bed on my stomach for about three months and let that all heal, at the end of which I really was ready to do whatever God wanted me to do,' he said in a 2004 interview posted by his media company. 'And I knew by then I was going to preach and teach.' MacArthur was born at St. Vincent's Hospital in Los Angeles. His father, Jack, was a pastor of a Baptist church in South L.A. and would would soon branch into evangelism, which would take the family to Chicago and Philadelphia. He attended Bob Jones University in Greenville, S.C., and then transferred to Los Angeles Pacific College. When he took the pulpit of Grace Community Church in 1969, Sunday attendance averaged about 700 people in the northern San Fernando Valley neighborhood. His influence expanded as thousands of radio listeners tuned into 'Grace to You,' his syndicated half-hour show, and he would later launch an extensive media outlet that broadcast his teachings to dozens of countries. He became president of the Master's College in 1985, which later changed its name to the Master's University, and presided over unprecedented growth at the fundamentalist institution, The Times wrote in 1990. He helped oversee a seminary next door. In 1997, The Times described how McArthur refused to use a typewriter or computer and painstakingly handwrote his Bible studies. 'I don't have time for the learning curve,' he said. He wrote more than 400 books and study guides, including the'The MacArthur Study Bible,' and appealed to ultraconservative churchgoers by adhering to fundamentalist biblical standards that focused on teaching an 'inerrant' Bible — a dogma that sees the Bible as devoid of mistakes. At the same time, he rejected the user-friendly sermons, rock music and community outreach that defined some evangelical churches in the 1980s and 1990s and took aim those who he said used gimmicks to attract people to church. The church 'is not a pub for the neighborhood,' he wrote in his 1993 book, 'Ashamed of the Gospel: When the Church Becomes Like the World.' 'It is not a community center where parties are held. It is not a country club for the masses.' The Times covered his attacks on fellow clergy, writing in 1991 that MacArthur turned into the 'enfant terrible of conservative Protestantism.' Over the span of his career, he called Catholicism a 'false religion,' criticized popular religious figures including Joel Osteen and Beth Moore, and called Black Lives Matter 'an organization that is the enemy of God' because of its support of LGBTQ+ equality. In recent years, at least two media outlets that cover religion — Christianity Today and the Roys Report — reported on allegations that women who sought biblical counseling over abusive marriages were advised by church elders to stay with their husbands and feared church discipline over the matter. The church did not respond to the allegations in the stories. After the 2020 pandemic left religious institutions reliant on livestreams and outdoor gatherings, Grace Community Church continued to hold indoor services, with MacArthur questioning the existence of the coronavirus and challenging whether the government could restrict prayer practices. County health inspectors who tried to enter the church where blocked by security guards. 'There is no pandemic,' MacArthur told his followers in August 2020, though later he would acknowledge the virus. Los Angeles County sued the church but ultimately settled in the face of Supreme Court rulings that sided with religious institutions. In a 2021 letter to supporters, MacArthur announced the church's legal fees would be paid. The church later received $800,000 from the state and county for the fees. 'We know that there is no circumstance that can cause the church to close,' he wrote in the letter. 'The church is not only a building but is the bride of Christ and exists to proclaim the truth.' MacArthur is survived by his wife, Patricia; four children; fifteen grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

ILEARN scores rising in math for Indiana students, flat in English/language arts
Six Lake County and five Porter County school districts topped the state's ILEARN combined math and English/language arts 31.2% pass rate in results announced Wednesday. Schools administered the Indiana Learning Evaluation and Assessment Readiness Network (ILEARN) in the spring. and statewide scores showed improvement in math, while English/language arts remained flat, officials said. 'While we continue to see students growing in math proficiency, this year's results remind us all of the need to continue our focus in both early and adolescent literacy,' said Gov. Mike Braun in a state release from the Department of Education. Statewide, 40.6% of Indiana's students are at or above proficiency standards in ELA, and 42.1% of students are at or above proficiency standards in math. It's up 0.1 and 5.2 percentage points, respectively, since 2021, ILEARN's baseline year with lowered scores blamed on the disruption from the COVID-19 pandemic. Since 2021, math pass rates have increased for all student populations. Still battling an achievement gap, Wednesday's report showed Black students had year-over-year increases in both ELA and math (0.9 and 2 percentage points, respectively) and had the highest percentage point increase of all students in ELA. Also, Black and Hispanic students had the highest year-over-year percentage point increases of all students in math (2 percentage points). Indiana students will take a redesigned ILEARN exam next year spaced over different periods in the school year. It was piloted in more than 1,000 schools last year. The redesigned exam will feature three 'checkpoints' and a shortened summative assessment at the end of the school year. Officials said the checkpoints will provide improved real-time student data to better support learning throughout the year, rather than waiting until the end of the year for results. 'While we are positively moving and improving in math, there is an urgent need to support middle school students in English/language arts,' said Secretary of Education Katie Jenner. Locally, students in the Duneland School Corp. in Chesterton fared the best with a combined pass rate of 53.6%, more than 20 points above the state pass rate. 'Our students, teachers and families continue to work together in the spirit of student achievement,' said Superintendent Chip Pettit. 'I'm excited to see their hard work paying off. We're also equally proud of the growth students are showing on a year-to-year basis.' Students in the School Town of Munster were close behind with a 53.3% pass rate. Nine Lake County districts improved their combined scores from last year, while three Porter County districts improved scores. Porter-based Discovery Charter School's 36.6% pass rate was the lone charter to eclipse the state pass rate. Four of the 10 local charters posted improved scores over last year. The private Diocese of Gary, with 20 schools, bested the state pass rate with a 40% mark. The state also released the 2025 SAT results, which represent the required high school assessment for federal accountability. Students take the SAT in 11th grade. The state passing score is the same as the national pass rate, per state law. Students who met the evidence-based reading and writing portion of the SAT improved 2.7% with 54.5% meeting the cut score of 480. In math, just 25.4% met the national cut score of 530.
