Eight men sentenced to lengthy jail terms for their part in biggest ever drug seizure in Ireland
for their part in Ireland's biggest ever drugs seizure.
The men were all arrested after a spectacular Garda, Revenue Customs and Defence Forces operation targeting the MV Matthew bulk carrier cargo ship and the Castlemore trawler off the east and south coasts in September 2023.

Previously Detective Superintendent Keith Halley, who led the investigation, outlined the facts. He had been the garda liaison with the Joint Task Force and worked closely with Revenue Customs.

He told the court that an intelligence led operation by gardaí and customs, the ARW along with the naval ship LÉ William Butler Yeats were deployed. They seized the ship which was running for the Atlantic and heading to the African country of Sierra Leone as their plan to smuggle 2.2 tonnes or €157m worth of cocaine fell apart.
The MV Matthew was bought by an organised crime group for the sole aim of smuggling the drugs to Ireland.
The accused were identified after a lengthy investigation which included the downloading a phones and chat groups they were using to communicate with crime gang handlers in Dubai.
The accused from the Matthew are: Iranian Saied Hassani (39), Filipino Harold Estoesta (31), Ukrainian Mykhailo Gavryk (32), Ukrainian Vitali Vlasoi (32), Iranian ship's captain Soheil Jelveh (51) and Dutch Cumali Ozgen (49).
The men on the Castlemore were Ukrainian Vitaliy Lapa (62) and UK Jamie Harbron (31).
They had pleaded guilty at the Special Criminal Court to offences specific to the commission of offences under drug trafficking act.

Louth student avoids prison sentence for storing and dealing drugs
Josh Cole, Townley Manor, Tullyallen, Drogheda, pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of drugs for sale or supply at his home address, charges which stemmed from a Garda search which yielded cannabis worth more than €30,000 and cocaine valued €299. Judge Dara Hayes sentenced him to two concurrent terms of three-and-a-half years and suspended both for three-and-a-half years. Last April, the court heard that the defendant is studying Music and Computer Science at Maynooth University. He had been struggling for money after failing first year and having to pay full fees. He was holding most of the drugs for someone else. He was given money and some drugs to sell himself as payment for storing them. He was aged 19 at the time. Gda Emma Kilroe testified that on July 25, 2023, gardaí searched Mr Cole's home at Townley Manor where he lived with his brother and sister. In an upstairs bedroom a sports bag was found. It contained 1.51kg of cannabis valued €30,228 and 4.27g of cocaine worth €299.32. Gardaí also discovered a weighing scale and bags. The accused was present at the search and following his arrest made admissions during interview at Drogheda Garda Station. He wouldn't name other people involved. There were no previous convictions, nor had he come to adverse attention since. It was submitted by counsel that the accused had been prevailed upon to hold these drugs for 'more sinister elements in the community'. The case had been put back to allow him complete exams. ADVERTISEMENT On the adjourned date the court had 11 urinalysis reports from January 9 last to July 3 and all were negative, as well as the defendant's exam results. Judge Hayes said that the Probation Service had assessed Mr Cole at low risk of reoffending. A report noted that he was the youngest of three children, worked part-time in a local shop and had strong ties to his church. The judge remarked that by any measure it was a substantial quantity of drugs. The defendant had been dealing to a small scale as well as storing drugs. He remained a very young man. Double rapist Simon McGinley back on the streets just days after prison release
This is notorious double rapist Simon McGinley out and about in a Co Louth town just days after he was released from prison. Evil McGinley, 52, walked free from the Midlands Prison on Wednesday after completing a sentence he received last year for breaching the conditions of the Sex Offenders Act. Our exclusive photos show the cowardly double rapist, dressed in a striped t-shirt, a grey zip-up jumper and black trousers and carrying a mobile phone and blue disposable vape, as The Irish Mirror tracked him down in Dundalk. The sicko sex fiend, who is now subject to Garda monitoring as he has been described as a dangerous individual, was in prison since August 2023 after he was sentenced at Dundalk Circuit Court for the breaches. As part of his release conditions, he is also under the supervision of the Probation Service for the next 12 years. He has also been placed on the Sex Offenders Register for the rest of his life. In October 2022, the sex beast was released from Arbour Hill Prison, having served 13 years behind bars of an overall 21-year sentence for the brutal and shocking rape of an 85-year-old woman in her Co Monaghan home in 2008. A drunken McGinley had broken into her home and raped her repeatedly during the night and put his hand over her mouth. The elderly woman had been unfit to give evidence during the trial due to worsening dementia. But, a statement she had given at a previous district court hearing was read to the jury. The evil rapist was previously sentenced to 12 years in 1998 after pleading guilty to raping a 13-year-old girl in August 1997 — in a controversy known as the 'C Case'. The young girl at the centre of the infamous 'C Case' against him was involved in a legal battle over whether she was allowed to travel to the UK to have an abortion. Speaking out in 2009, the victim told RTÉ Radio how the brutal attack left her pregnant and forced her into a succession of care homes and how she was caught at the centre of an infamous legal battle over her right to have an abortion. 'He ruined my life and I am still coming to terms with that. My life is destroyed,' said the woman. 'I never got schooling or anything like that. I don't know how many times I tried to kill myself but I have a little five-year-old son now so he keeps me going.' Dangerous rapist McGinley has also previously been compared to infamous beast Larry Murphy and is considered a highly volatile sexual predator. And he was once deemed a person of interest in the case of missing JoJo Dullard. During his trial in 2009 for the rape of the elderly woman, Mr Justice Birmingham said he could find no mitigating circumstance. 'Rape is always a serious offence but within the spectrum of rapes this, in my view, is at the top of the upper end. This case is just about as bad as it gets,' he said.
