Cambodia's Information ministry appeals for public to cease social media attacks on foreign leaders
PHNOM PENH: The Ministry of Information has issued an urgent call for all content creators, social media users and members of the public to immediately cease any form of insult or defamation targeting foreign heads of state or leaders, even in the context of current border tensions.
The request was issued Tuesday (July 29), following a noticeable rise in edited images, inflammatory content and inappropriate commentary circulating online.
These actions have caused insults affecting the honour and dignity of individuals, including politicians and members of royalty.
The ministry urged all social media users to conduct themselves with integrity, responsibility and respect, and to adhere to ethical standards of public discourse.
It stressed that its goal is to maintain public order and uphold peaceful online environments, free from incitement, hate speech, racism or ethnically charged rhetoric.
The statement advised the public to avoid sharing or producing unverified information that could lead to confusion, anger, violence, hatred or racial discrimination.
It also called on journalists, content creators and the public to verify information with official sources — particularly on sensitive issues such as the Cambodia-Thailand border conflict — before sharing it.
Additionally, it asked people to refrain from posting doctored images or false content that could be viewed as defamatory, especially toward royal institutions.
The ministry concluded by praising responsible media professionals and users who have contributed positively to Cambodia's messaging, helping uphold accuracy and diplomacy in addressing the conflict.
It commended their ethical behaviour, respect for others' rights and commitment to a peaceful, law-based resolution in line with international law. - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN

About 30 DAP MPs visit Umno HQ for TVET briefing by Zahid
KUALA LUMPUR: Nearly 30 DAP members of parliament made a historic visit to the Umno headquarters at Menara Dato Onn earlier this week, signalling growing maturity and cooperation within the unity government. The MPs were attending a briefing on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), hosted by Deputy Prime Minister and Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who also chairs the national TVET Council. The rare show of unity comes amid a series of developments that have further defined the government's agenda in recent weeks. Among them was the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13) by Anwar, which sets out a strategic five-year blueprint to elevate Malaysia into a formidable middle power. The plan outlines long-term priorities in economic resilience, innovation and inclusive growth. Separately, Malaysia also secured a revision to a previously imposed 25 per cent US import tariff, bringing it down to 19 per cent. The move is expected to benefit local industries, especially rubber glove and furniture manufacturers, who can now compete on a more level playing field with Asean counterparts. Chan said these achievements demonstrated that the government's consistent, strategic approach was yielding results. Farmer charged with trafficking six Indonesians into country
JOHOR BARU: A farmer with permanent resident status has been charged at the Sessions Court here with smuggling six migrants into the country. The accused, Salim Ahmad, 61, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before Judge Siti Noraida Sulaiman on Friday (August 1). According to the charge sheet, Salim was said to have smuggled six Indonesians aged from 25 to 47 at Counter 04, Zone C at the vehicle exit control of the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex on June 14. The accused, who has permanent resident status, was charged under Section 26A of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years' jail, a fine or both. No bail was granted and the court set Aug 13 for next mention.

Cambodian PM says 19% US trade tariff ‘the best news'

(Bernama pic) PHNOM PENH : Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on Friday welcomed a 19% trade tariff imposed by US President Donald Trump, avoiding a threatened levy of 36%. 'This is the best news for the people and economy of Cambodia to continue to develop the country,' Hun Manet wrote on Facebook. Trump had originally threatened a swingeing 49% tariff on Cambodia as part of his 'Liberation Day' measures aimed at rebalancing world trade in America's favour, but cut it to 36% last month. Dozens of countries face steep levies under the tariff regime approved by Trump in Washington on Thursday, set to come into force in a week. Cambodia is a major manufacturer of low-cost clothing for Western brands, with garment products accounting for most of its US$10 billion in exports to the United States last year. Many factories in Cambodia are Chinese-owned and the White House has accused the kingdom of allowing Chinese goods to stop over on the way to US markets, thereby skirting steeper rates imposed on Beijing. The tariff announcement came days after Trump intervened to help broker a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia to end border clashes that left more than 40 people dead.
