Peugeot's GTi revived, but as an ultra powerful electric 208

The Citizen13-06-2025
For the first time in its one-again, off-again 41 year history, the Peugeot GTi name now features on an EV.

Announced at the end of May as making a comeback five years after first rumours started emerging, Peugeot has officially revived the GTi nameplate for the 208, albeit solely with electric propulsion.
Showcased on the eve of this weekend's 24 Hours of Le Mans, the newly named E-208 GTi also becomes the most powerful GTi-badged hatchback the Lion brand has ever made.
Aggressive exterior
Building on the aesthetic revisions applied to the standard 208 and by extension, the E-208, two years ago, the E-208 GTi receives model specific bumpers and door sills, colour-coded wheel arch extensions, slotted 18-inch alloy wheels supposed to pay homage to the 205 1.9 GTi, a front lip spoiler underneath the bumper, and 208 letting on the C-pillar.

Not stopping there, Peugeot has dropped the GTi's ride height by 30 mm compared to the normal E-208, while also increasing the front and rear tracks by 56 mm and 27 mm respectively.
Claimed to be sporty but not overdone, the special applique concludes with an imitation gloss black rear diffuser, a black finish on the sealed grille, red detailing as a further nod to the 205 GTi, and black tinting for the LED fog lamps.
Changes underneath and inside
The work of Peugeot's Sport division, and reportedly with input of the 9X0 that will once again compete in the top-tier Hypercar class at Le Mans, the E-208 GTi's e-CMP platform has also undergone a series of changes from the standard E-208.

Besides the mentioned alloy wheels wrapped in specially designed Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, Peugeot has fitted uprated springs and shock absorbers, a new anti-roll bar at the rear, a limited slip differential and retuned electric power steering.
Along with the track width extensions, Peugeot has fitted bespoke Peugeot Sport brakes utilising red-painted brake calipers with four-pistons of a diameter of 355 mm at the front.
Sport seats feature red accents, 208 GTi embroidery work and the Peugeot Lion logo integrated into the headrests. Image: Peugeot
Inside, the tribute touches to the 205 GTi continue with red finishes on the floor mats, seatbelts, dashboard and doors, red accents plus a mesh pattern on the Alcantara sport seats, perforated leather and Alcantara with red detailing on the GTi-branded steering wheel, and seven ambient lighting colours.
Voltage turned up
Up front, the retention of the 54-kWh battery pack used in the regular E-208 has come with a considerable increase in power and torque from 115kW/260Nm to 206kW/345Nm.
The same unit used in the Abarth 600e and Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce, the E-208 GTi will get from 0-100 km/h in a claimed 5.7 seconds and hit a limited top speed of 180 km/h.
Exterior design pays extensive homage to the iconic 205 GTi. Image: Peugeot
The claimed all-electric range is 350 km and the waiting time using a DC fast charger up 100 kW less than 30 minutes from 20-80%.
A 7.4 kW charger, which will require four hours 40 min of charging from a wallbox, is however fitted as standard.
Not for us
On-sale in Europe before the end of the year, with pricing still to be announced, the E-208 GTi is not expected to be offered in South Africa at any stage within the next few years.

Dutch court rules Opel, Peugeot, Citroën, DS diesel models used emissions cheat software

A Dutch court on Wednesday said diesel cars sold by Opel, Peugeot, Citroën and DS in the Netherlands from 2009 contained software designed to cheat emissions tests. In its intermediary ruling in a class-action suit brought by three organisations against Stellantis, which now owns the targeted car companies, the court did not determine whether any compensation should be paid. Stellantis denied the accusations and said it was considering 'appropriate next steps' to defend its interests. 'Stellantis firmly believes that the vehicles comply with all applicable emission regulations and that the court has made incorrect interim considerations in this case,' it said. The car brands have been under investigation in Europe, along with several other carmakers, in the wake of Volkswagen's Dieselgate emissions scandal. The Dutch court said it was clear that diesel cars introduced by the four brands since 2014 were equipped with software that manipulated their emission control system, keeping nitrogen oxide emissions artificially low during official tests. It said this was also the case for Opel diesels introduced since 2009, while it suspected the same for the Peugeot, Citroën and DS diesels of this generation.

Jeep owner Stellantis says has turned corner

PARIS - Jeep owner Stellantis said it sees sales revenue and profitability rebounding in the second half of the year despite taking a 1.5-billion-euro ($1.7-billion) hit from US tariffs. The 15-brand group that also includes Peugeot, Citroen and Fiat, confirmed the preliminary announcement it made last week of a 2.3-billion-euro net loss in the first half of the year, as sales in North America continued to slump on an annual comparison. But Stellantis's new chief executive, Antonio Filosa, said the automaker is beginning to see "gradual improvement" in sales volumes and revenues on a sequential basis "despite intensifying external headwinds". Like some of its rivals, Stellantis had suspended financial guidance due to the uncertainty surrounding US tariffs and regulatory changes, but it said it now sees an increase in revenues in the second half of the year as well as operating profit margin in the low single digits. Under former chief executive Carlos Tavares the company had long targeted a double-digit margin, but it fell to just 0.7 percent. Stellantis also put a figure on the impact of the 25 percent US tariffs on auto imports: 1.5 billion euros for 2025 overall, of which 300 million euros was incurred in the first half of the year. Part of the turnaround was taking a 3.3-billion-euro charge, which Stellantis announced last week, which took into account the costs to adapting to new US regulations. Trump's massive tax and spending legislation, approved earlier this month, removed the penalties for not respecting the so-called CAFE fuel economy targets, meaning automakers can produce and sell more higher polluting cars in the United States. This is allowing Stellantis to bring back a number of models, including pickup trucks and muscle cars, that had been phased out because of their internal combustion engines to meet fuel efficiency targets and pollution limits. Stellantis said this and a "product wave" of 10 new models this year would support future performance. Company veteran Filosa took over as chief executive in June, half a year after Tavares left, in large part to haemorrhaging sales in North America. Filosa has shook up the company's management team and moved swiftly to jettison two billion euros of programmes considered as having poor prospects to quickly turn a profit, such as hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Stellantis shares slumped 3.7 percent in trading on the Paris stock exchange, which was up 0.5 percent overall. Stellantis shares have lost around 37 percent since the start of the year and 70 percent from their peak early last year.

Stellantis expects gradual recovery in second half and more ‘tough decisions'

Stellantis guided on Tuesday for increased net revenues and a low single-digit operating income margin in the second half despite increasing headwinds as the carmaker aims for a gradual recovery after a tough first half. The group also forecast an improved industrial free cash flow performance in the second half compared with the first six months of the year, when it burned cash for €3bn (R62.12bn ) . "Our new leadership team, while realistic about the challenges, will continue making the tough decisions needed to re-establish profitable growth and significantly improved results," said new CEO Antonio Filosa. Stellantis said its forecasts for the second half were based on tariff rules in place as of Tuesday and estimated an overall tariff impact for 2025 of about €1.5bn (R31.07bn ) , including €300m (R6.21bn ) incurred in the first half. For the first half, the maker of Jeep, Fiat and Peugeot cars broadly confirmed preliminary figures it released last week. They include: a 13% drop in net revenues to €74.3bn (R1.54-trillion ); an adjusted operating income margin of 0.7%; and a net loss of €2.3bn (R47.66bn ) .
