Shimla: Himachal Pradesh has recorded 224 deaths so far this monsoon season, including 116 in rain-related incidents such as landslides, flash floods, cloudbursts, and drowning, and 108 in road accidents, according to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA).The SDMA's cumulative report for June 20 to August 10 said the state has suffered an estimated Rs 1,98,923.75 lakh in losses to public and private property, agriculture, horticulture, and infrastructure."Continuous rains have caused widespread damage to roads, power supply, water schemes, houses, and crops. Rescue, relief, and restoration works are in progress across all affected districts," an SDMA spokesperson said.Among districts, Mandi has reported the highest number of rain-related deaths at 23, followed by Kangra (25), Chamba (9), and Kullu (10). Road accident fatalities were highest in Mandi (21), followed by Chamba (17) and Shimla (15).The SDMA report shows damage to 896 houses (fully damaged), 36 shops/factories, 619 km of PWD roads, 926 km of Jal Shakti water schemes, and significant losses to agriculture and horticulture, with 2,045.05 hectares of crops affected.Authorities have appealed to the public to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in vulnerable areas, and to strictly follow advisories issued during heavy rainfall warnings.Due to the monsoons, 359 roads, including one national highway, blocked, 132 electricity distribution transformers (DTRs) down, and 520 water supply schemes disrupted in Himachal Pradesh.According to the SDMA's district-wise report, Mandi has reported the highest number of road blockages at 212, followed by Kullu with 91 and Kangra with 22. The blocked national highway, NH-305, is shut at Jhed (Khanag) in Kullu district due to a landslide.In terms of power disruptions, Kullu district reported 50 DTRs down, Mandi 77, and Kangra 2, while the largest number of water supply scheme failures was in Kullu (367 schemes), followed by Mandi (78 schemes) and Kangra (72 schemes).The SDMA has urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel in vulnerable areas and to follow official advisories during restoration operations.

The IMD will set up the wind profilers in 10 locations – Amritsar, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Patna, Varanasi, Lucknow, Mohanbari, Bhubaneswar, Calicut, and Thiruvananthapuram Building on its 'Mission Mausam' to sharpen weather forecasts, the IMD has floated a global tender to procure, install and commission 10 wind profiler systems at multiple sites across India. Wind profilers are like advanced doppler radars that provide the deepest coverage of the atmosphere, collecting data on wind speed, direction, and conditions at various levels above the ground. Each system is expected to last for at least 10 years. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has identified 10 locations for the installation – Amritsar, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Patna, Varanasi, Lucknow, Mohanbari (Assam), Bhubaneswar, Calicut, and Thiruvananthapuram spanning the length and breadth of the country. Once installed, these wind profilers will significantly boost India's atmospheric observation network, improving weather forecasting and climate monitoring capabilities nationwide. The data will also be useful for airline planning and detection of turbulence during flight. These typically work by transmitting electromagnetic waves along the device's antenna systems. In its pre-bid security requirements, the tender document – accessed by News18, mandates pre-dispatch inspections, adherence to technical specifications, and compliance with the Centre's 'Make in India' policy. While the deal is open to both Indian and foreign manufacturers, preference will be given to local suppliers, micro and small enterprises as well as startups. A pre-bid conference will be held at the IMD headquarters in New Delhi, with bid submissions to be made exclusively via the government's e-procurement portals. WHAT IS THE RS 2,000-CRORE 'MISSION MAUSAM'? Last September, the central government launched the Rs 2,000 crore 'Mission Mausam' to make India 'weather ready' and 'climate smart' in wake of increasing extreme events, which have made tropical weather far more erratic and harder to predict. As part of the project, the IMD also outlined plans to add vertical wind profiles and radiometers at 15 locations, as well as increase the number of radiosondes from the existing 54. These instruments provide day and night data for wind direction, temperature, and humidity up to an altitude of 12 km, every 15 minutes. According to IMD director-general Dr Mrityunjay Mohapatra, the mission will improve weather forecasting in cities and have better spatial resolution than the existing 12 km. 'This will also enable IMD to issue Nowcast warnings for rains an hour in advance – up from three hours at present," Mohapatra said. 1 2 3 4 5 6 Hyderabad: Crores of money invested by Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) in constructing rainwater holding structures in various locations in the city to mitigate urban flooding on major thoroughfares have proved to be ineffective in preventing water stagnation during heavy rainfall. In 2024, GHMC proposed to construct 50 rainwater holding structures near major water logging points in the city so that surplus water can be diverted to these tanks and the same can be re-pumped into the drain on any dry day. Currently, there are around 140 water logging points, including 30 critical ones. Among them, the civic body constructed 10 rainwater holding structures with a capacity of 2 to 10 lakh litres each, costing between Rs 50 lakh and 1 crore, including at Mercure Hyderabad KCP, Errum Manzil, Lake View Guest House, Raj Bhavan Road, Secretariat, and Ameerpet. However, despite these efforts, water continues to accumulate when heavy rains occur at these locations. These structures have RCC socket, spigot pipes along with all necessary items for diversion of water, injection borewells, fixing of iron grills for collection of stormwater, supply of high-density polyethylene material grade for inlet and outlets, and submersible pumps to pump the water into the nearest drain in a few hours. GHMC attributed the ongoing situation to cloudburst-like rains, which brought 10 cm of rainfall within one hour. "The existing rainwater holding structures are designed to manage up to 5 cm of rainfall. During the heavy downpour, water rapidly filled these structures within minutes. However, these structures enabled GHMC to pump it into nearby drains within 30 minutes, facilitating the smooth flow of traffic," said a senior official in the engineering wing, GHMC. Meanwhile, Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) decided to undertake new pipeline works at flood-prone stretches to alleviate water stagnation on the roads. The existing water outlets are insufficient to allow free flow of water during intense rainfall, leading to accumulation. "We proposed initiating civil works at several water logging areas, including Maitrivanam, Malkam Cheruvu, and Malkpet, on a pilot basis before expanding the project to additional locations. Our engineering wing will coordinate with relevant departments such as GHMC and traffic to execute these works," said AV Ranganath, commissioner, HYDRAA.
