General Motors, Hyundai to develop five vehicles amid rising competition
General Motors and Hyundai Motor on Wednesday outlined plans to develop five vehicles as they seek to lower costs amid growing competition from nimble Chinese rivals. Four of the vehicles — a compact SUV/car/ pickup, and a mid-size pickup — are targeted at Central and South American markets and will support both internal combustion and hybrid powertrains. At full production scale, the companies expect to roll out at least 800,000 vehicles annually. The partnership will help GM compete against rising Chinese players in the Latin American market, where the Detroit automaker has had a strong presence for decades. The two global automakers will also co-develop an electric commercial van for the North American market. Reuters in March reported that the two companies were nearing a deal to share two commercial electric vans. Global automakers face stiff competition from Chinese EV makers and a trade war impacting imports of crucial parts, including rare earth materials, which has pushed production costs higher. This is the first major partnership for vehicle development for Hyundai Motor. The deal would give GM access to hybrid technology it lacks, while enabling Hyundai to enter into new segments such as vans in North America and mid-sized pickups, Kim Sung-rae, an analyst at Hanwha Investment & Securities, said. The two companies did not say where the models will be produced. Hyundai, which has a factory in Alabama, said it will expand the production capacity of its new factory in Georgia. The company also has a factory in Brazil. GM's budding partnership with Hyundai follows an unwinding of several projects the Detroit automaker had pursued with Honda over the past decade. Notably, GM and Honda in 2023 scrapped a $5 billion plan to jointly develop affordable electric vehicles. Chinese automakers have released several high-tech, low-cost models, putting pressure on legacy automakers such as GM to slash expenses and streamline manufacturing processes. To compete with these rivals, many automakers have explored partnerships as a way to share development costs, especially for battery-powered models. Cutting costs is even more pressing as tariffs have added billions of dollars in expenses for automakers around the globe. The Hyundai-GM announcement comes after the United States and South Korea last week reached a trade agreement to charge a 15% tariff on imports from South Korea, including autos. This is among several deals between a South Korean company and a U.S. firm announced in recent weeks, following Samsung Electronics' chip deal with Tesla TSLA.O and Apple AAPL.O, and LG Energy Solution's battery deal with Tesla.

ParkOhio Announces Second Quarter 2025 Results
CLEVELAND--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Park-Ohio Holdings Corp. (NASDAQ: PKOH) today announced its results for the second quarter of 2025. 'We entered the second half of 2025 with momentum across ParkOhio. We have delivered two straight quarters of margin expansion and earnings growth, even amid modest revenue headwinds—proof that our operational discipline is working. We are also starting to see leading indicators of increased activity and backlog, especially in our engineered products segment. ParkOhio is in the late innings of a portfolio transformation that we plan to exit as a higher quality, more profitable, de-leveraged business. The decline reflects lower volumes in fuel rail and rubber products, delays in new OEM platform launches, and the expiration of favorable pricing on legacy programs. Demand in this segment is closely linked to OEM launch schedules, overall vehicle production, and customer consolidation of the supply base. We continue to win new business across all product lines, with over $50 million of incremental business launching in the second half of 2025 and throughout 2026. ('Industries'), a subsidiary of Park-Ohio Holdings Corp., completed its offering of $350.0 million aggregate principal amount of senior secured notes due 2030 (the "Notes") in a private offering. The Notes were priced at 99.50% of par and bear an interest rate of 8.50% per annum. The Notes are senior obligations of Industries and guaranteed, with certain exceptions, by Industries' existing and future domestic subsidiaries on a senior secured basis. The Company used the net proceeds from the offering of the Notes, along with cash on hand, to redeem all $350.0 million aggregate principal amount of its outstanding 6.625% Senior Notes due 2027 (the "2027 Senior Notes") and pay related fees and expenses. Claire's files second bankruptcy petition in 7 years
Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Officials for retailer Claire's filed for bankruptcy protection on Wednesday as its operating costs rise while demand for its goods declines among its youthful customers. A combination of tariffs on the mostly Chinese-produced goods sold by Claire's and inflation has cooled demand among its mostly youthful customers, according to NPR. So has its distribution system of brick-and-mortar storefronts inside malls at a time when its traditionally youthful shoppers prefer buying goods online. Illinois-based Claire's has a $500 million loan due for payment next year, but its declining revenues and profits endanger its stores in the United States and Canada. "Increased competition, consumer spending trends and the ongoing shift away from brick-and-mortar retail, in combination with our current debt obligations and macroeconomic factors, necessitate this course of action for Claire's and its stakeholders," Claire's Chief Executive Officer Chris Cramer said in a prepared statement. Claire's counterpart in Canada likely will file for bankruptcy protection there, but the retailer's North American stores will remain open. "We remain in active discussions with potential strategic and financial partners and are committed to completing our review of strategic alternatives," Cramer said. Claire's filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for Delaware. The retailer is noted for its low-cost fashion accessories, jewelry and piercing services. In 2018, the company filed for bankruptcy protection. Elliott Management Corp. and Monarch Alternative Capital now control Claire's, which wiped out $1.9 billion in debt and kept its retail outlets open after securing a $575 million loan, according to CNBC. The retailer cited between $1 billion and $10 billion in assets and liabilities alike in Wednesday's bankruptcy filing. Tariffs on Chinese-made goods could affect Claire's supply chain, and increased competition from ear-piercing service providers is affecting Claire's business among its younger customers. "Competition has ... become sharper and more intense over recent years," GlobalData managing director Neil Saunders recently said. "Retailers like Lovisa [are] offering younger shoppers a more sophisticated assortment at value prices," Saunders said. "This is more attuned to what younger consumers want and has left Claire's looking somewhat out of step with modern demand," he added.
