Contract workers' strike at Visakhapatnam Steel Plant: Human Rights Forum condemns privatization push, demands immediate reinstatement
VISAKHAPATNAM: The Human Rights Forum (HRF) stands in solidarity with the ongoing agitation by contract workers of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. Contract workers at the VSP have been on an indefinite strike for the past 10 days to realise their legitimate rights in the face of sustained threats by the management.

The HRF, led by KV Jagannadha Rao, HRF AP State President, and VS Krishna, HRF AP and TG Coordination Committee member, demands that the 3,000 contract workers who were recently terminated under the govt's retrograde privatisation policies be reinstated immediately. The management must abandon attempts to terminate a further 1,800 contract workers.
We condemn the management's use of police to intimidate workers instead of engaging in dialogue and seeking a democratic resolution of issues raised by them.
Resorting to fear tactics instead of negotiation, particularly when production at the plant is being affected, is unacceptable.
Contract workers are the backbone of daily operations at the plant, but they continue to be denied basic rights, job security, and dignity at the workplace. Their persistent demands for regularisation and fair wages are met not with dialogue, but with intimidation and removal.
It is common knowledge that the central govt is orchestrating a systematic conspiracy to privatise the steel plant by sanitising its financials—issuing an Rs 11,440 crore package, waiving GST and other dues, and making the plant attractive for private players.
We condemn this attempt to hand over a precious industrial asset—built on the sacrifice of 32 lives and the voluntary land donation by people of 69 villages—to corporate interests on a platter.
In the 40-year history of the VSP, we have not witnessed such intimidation tactics and huge police deployment. The suspension of protesting workers and the issuance of show-cause notices, we believe, are in direct violation of the Industrial Disputes Act of 1948. These actions are nothing but the implementation of the regressive new labour codes that the govt is actively pushing.
HRF calls for the immediate stoppage of punitive actions by the management and a democratic and peaceful resolution of grievances of employees and contract workers at the VSP. All attempts to privatise the steel plant must be halted.

Pakistan responded with cross-border shelling in Jammu and Kashmir and a series of drone attacks targeting military establishments and civilian areas, a majority of which were thwarted by Indian air defence systems. India also struck Pakistani airbases, including the Nur Khan airbase in Islamabad. Hostilities lasted till May 10, when the two countries declared a ceasefire. During his address on May 12, PM Narendra Modi drew a 'new red line' while articulating India's redefined doctrine against cross-border terrorism. He said acts of terror will be met with a befitting response, adding that India will not distinguish between terrorists and state-sponsors of terror. Currently, India has sent seven multi-party delegations — three of which are led by opposition leaders, including Congress's Shashi Tharoor — to rally global support for India's war against terror.

Kerala: PV Anvar to contest Nilambur bypolls as TMC candidate
Malappuram (Kerala) [India], June 1 (ANI): All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) has fielded their Kerala state coordinator, PV Anvar, as their candidate for the upcoming Nilambur bypolls, set to be held on June 19. Anvar had raised corruption allegations against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's officials and claimed that he would not be contesting the bypolls, supporting the Congress candidate instead. The byelections were necessitated after Anvar submitted his resignation on January 13 to Assembly Speaker AN Shamseer, days after holding talks with TMC leaders, including Abhishek Banerjee and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee. Talking about their candidate, a post by TMC read, 'Under the inspiration and guidance of Hon'ble Chairperson Smt. Mamata Banerjee, we are pleased to announce the All India Trinamool Congress candidate for the impending Kerala Legislative Bye-election scheduled for 19th June, 2025.' A few months ago, Anvar had accused CM Vijayan's political secretary P Sasi, and ADGP M R Ajith Kumar, claiming they were involved in phone tapping of ministers and journalists and also accused the ADGP and IPS officer Sujith Das of misappropriated seized gold. Anvar had claimed that there was RSS influence in the home department and Muslim youths were being framed in false cases. Following the accusations, Anvar, then an independent MLA but aligned with the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the state, vowed to work for ending the Pinarayi Vijayan-led government. 'I will not contest the Nilambur by-election. I will give full support to the Congress candidate to end the Pinarayi government. The Congress should field a candidate from Nilambur. Malappuram DCC president Joy is the suitable candidate,' Anvar had told mediapersons on January 13. The byelection has political significance as it is a precursor to next year's state assembly election and will test the popularity of the current government led by CM Vijayan. Anvar has also raised the issue of human-animal conflict in the state, and also apologised to Congress MLA VD Satheesan for raising corruption allegations against him, saying that CM Vijayan's political secretary had asked him to raise those allegations. 'CM's political secretary asked me to raise corruption allegation against opposition leader VD Satheesan in the assembly. He has prepared the matter to present in the assembly. The allegation that VD Satheesan received Rs 150 crore was raised in the assembly with the permission of the Speaker. I don't know whether there was a conspiracy. I apologise to opposition leader V D Satheesan and the public for this,' he told reporters. Anvar has been the Nilambur MLA since 2016, backed by the LDF in both the 2016 and 2021 assembly elections. Notably, LDF has announced M Swaraj as their candidate, meanwhile Bharatiya Janata Party is fielding Mohan George and the United Democratic Front (UDF) announced Aryadan Shoukath. (ANI)

Meanwhile, Sarma today said that with two more arrests, 81 'anti-nationals' are now behind bars in the Assam for sympathising with Pakistan on social media posts. The latest arrests were from Kamrup and Sonitpur districts. Sonitpur Police arrested Md Dilbar Hussain, and Kamrup Police arrested Hafizur Rahman for allegedly sympathising with Pakistan with their posts on social media. The Chief Minister said that authorities are tracking 'anti-national' social media posts and taking action. '81 Anti-Nationals are now behind bars for sympathising with Pak | #Update | 1 June,' Sarma said in a post on X. '@SonitpurPolice arrested Md Dilbar Hussain. @KamrupPolice arrested Hafizur Rahman. Our systems are constantly tracking anti-national posts on social media and taking actions,' he said. Meanwhile, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday conducted a massive search operation at 15 locations in eight states, including Assam, in a Pakistan-linked espionage case. Searches were conducted at the premises of suspects linked with Pakistan Intelligence Operatives (PIOs) in the states of Delhi, Maharashtra (Mumbai), Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Assam and West Bengal. NIA teams have seized several electronic gadgets and sensitive financial documents, along with other incriminating materials, during the searches. These are being extensively examined for clues to the espionage racket being run by Pakistan-based operatives as part of an anti-India terror conspiracy. As per NIA investigations, the suspects targeted in the searches had connections with Pakistani operatives and acted as financial conduits for carrying out espionage activities in India. NIA had registered the case on 20th May following the arrest of an accused person who had been sharing sensitive information with PIOs since 2023 and had received funds through various conduits in India in lieu of leaking classified information related to national security. The anti-terror agency is continuing with its investigation in the case, registered under sections 61(2), 147, 148 of BNS 2023, sections 3 & 5 of the Official Secrets Act 1923 and section 18 of UA(P) Act 1967.
