Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam has invited the seven Indian migrant workers who saved a woman driver from a sinkhole. They have been invited to the Istana presidential palace on August 3.
The Indian workers who have been invited to the presidential palace are: Pitchai Udaiyappan Subbiah, 47, and his co-workers Velmurugan Muthusamy, 27, Poomalai Saravanan, 28, Ganesan Veerasekar, 32, Bose Ajithkumar, 26, Narayanasamy Mayakrishnan, 25, and Sathapillai Rajendran, 56.
Pitchai Udaiyappan Subbiah is a site foreman whose quick thinking saved the woman.
Pitchai Udaiyappan Subbiah and his colleagues were working at a PUB worksite near the One Amber condominium when the incident happened. The migrant workers heard a loud sound and rushed out of the site to see a massive sinkhole on Tanjong Katong Road South.
They also saw a black car which had fallen into the sinkhole and a woman trying to come out of it. A concrete component in the shaft "failed" at around 5.50 pm last Saturday, according to the national water agency. Around the same time, a sinkhole formed on the adjacent road, causing a car to fall in.
Subbiah then instructed three of his colleagues to throw a nylon rope to the woman and pull her out. One of them offered to go in and help her climb, but Subbiah opted for the rope, reasoning that the rescuer might not be able to get out either.
The woman was out of the sinkhole in three-five minutes.
Meanwhile, 1,639 donors have contributed SGD72,241 for the seven heroes, according to a Facebook page of the ItsRainingRaincoats (IRR), a Singapore charity. Also Read | Sinkhole swallows whole PMC truck in Pune's Budwar Peth, netizens react: 'Space technology'
The President's Office said, 'There will be opportunities for interaction between the guests - including the migrant workers – and the president during the Istana open house.'
The workers have been commended by the Ministry of Manpower's (MOM) Assurance, Care and Engagement (ACE) Group, a division that aims to support migrant workers' well-being.
The ACE Coin, given to each of the workers, is a "token of appreciation" presented to migrant worker volunteers and partners who have made meaningful contributions towards supporting and caring for the migrant worker community.

THIS state is known as UPSC factory, produced highest number of IAS officers, Bihar is at No 2; not Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, the name is…

(File) Highest IAS officers: Millions of aspirants from across the length and breadth of India sit in the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE)– one of the toughest recruitment exams in the country– each year in hopes of fulfilling their dream of joining civil services by becoming IAS, IFS, or IPS officers. But have you ever wondered which Indian state churns out the highest number of IAS officers? Let us find out. Which Indian state has most IAS officers? Interestingly, southern states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, known for their high literacy rate, do not produce the maximum number of IAS officers, but the northern state of Uttar Pradesh earns this distinction, followed by neighboring Bihar and Rajasthan. A major reason why Uttar Pradesh has essentially become a UPSC factory is its massive population and the presence of reputed coaching institutes in Lucknow, Prayagraj, Varanasi, and other major UP cities, that offer UPSC coaching to aspirants at a reasonable price. Why UP, Bihar produce more IAS officers? Additionally, the youth of northern states like UP and Bihar, both in urban as well as rural regions, are more inclined towards joining administrative services, while their counterparts in the south gravitate more towards tech jobs and corporate sector. Similarly, Bihar, which shares a lot of cultural similarities with Uttar Pradesh, also has a long legacy of producing IAS officers. Akin to UP, joining civil services is considered prestigious in Bihar, and the state has a strong network of UPSC coaching centers in capital Patna, and other major cities. What are the top IAS states? As per data, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar churn out the highest number of IAS officers, followed by Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, and Punjab. Here is the percentage-wise breakdown: Uttar Pradesh: 20-25% Bihar: 15-18% Rajasthan: 5-8% Tamil Nadu: 5-7% Andhra Pradesh and Telangana: 5-6% Maharashtra: 4-5% Punjab: 3-5%

Ancient relics believed to be Lord Buddha's bones traced to US family, returned to India after 127 years

JAIPUR: A family based in the United States was allegedly preparing to sell ancient remains believed to be the bones of Lord Buddha through a major international auction house, Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat revealed on Saturday. The announcement was made during a public hearing at his residence in Jodhpur. The relics, once taken out of the country during British rule, were recently traced to a family in the United States that was allegedly preparing to sell them through an international auction house. Speaking at a public hearing at his residence in Jodhpur, Shekhawat said that the relics had appeared in a Sotheby's catalogue earlier this year, triggering swift intervention by the Indian government. 'We stopped the auction and informed them that the Government of India wanted to claim and officially receive the relics,' he said. The sacred remains were originally discovered in 1898 during British-led excavations at Piprahwa in the Kapilvastu region, present-day Uttar Pradesh. They were found inside a stone casket believed to belong to the Shakya clan—Lord Buddha's own family. The casket contained a crystal container with ashes said to be of Buddha, along with belongings of his nephew and other kin. British officer William Peppe, who led the excavation, took possession of a large portion of the relics, some of which later made their way overseas.
