'AI Didn't Take the Jobs. Irrelevance Did.' – Nikeelu Gunda on the TCS Layoffs and the Future of Work

Hans India31-07-2025
Tata Consultancy Services' (TCS) decision to lay off over 12,000 employees has sent a ripple of unease across the Indian IT ecosystem. But beyond the headlines and panic, industry experts see this as a long-overdue shift in how talent is valued in the age of automation and agility.
AI strategist and educator Nikeelu Gunda, who has trained over 50,000 professionals and leads an initiative Digipreneur AI, believes the TCS layoffs are not caused by AI, but by stagnation. 'AI didn't take the jobs. Irrelevance did,' he states. According to him, this isn't a tech apocalypse—it's a skills revolution.
From Bench to Breakdown
For decades, the "bench culture" in IT firms offered a sense of comfort—a place where employees waited for deployment while still drawing a salary. But that model is no longer compatible with today's business demands. Companies now require outcome-driven, deployment-ready professionals who can think beyond code.
'Being on the bench was once a buffer. Now, it's a blind spot,' says Gunda. 'In a world where AI delivers faster than humans can react, waiting is not a strategy—it's a signal of redundancy.'
This breakdown of the traditional model highlights the growing gap between formal employment and actual utility. As organizations embrace agile methods and product-led delivery, the emphasis is no longer on how many people are hired—but how many people are useful, relevant, and forward-moving.
What Should Professionals Do?
Nikeelu Gunda believes this moment is a wake-up call for every IT and non-IT professional in the country. He shares a three-step mindset shift that can future-proof any career:
1. Build, Don't Just Know
'Knowing ChatGPT exists won't save your job. Knowing how to build with it might.'
Professionals must move from surface-level knowledge to deep, application-oriented understanding. Learn how to use AI to solve real problems in your industry, not just for curiosity.
2. Shift from Execution to Innovation
'The market doesn't reward task-doers anymore. It rewards problem-solvers.'
Train yourself in critical thinking, design thinking, and decision-making. Learn to identify inefficiencies in your workflow and optimize them using tools like automation, no-code AI platforms, or data insights.
3. Communicate Value, Not Just Experience
'Years of experience mean little if you can't explain your impact in a sentence.'
Whether you're a developer, designer, or analyst—learn to present your skills in terms of business value. Build a personal brand. Share your learnings. Be discoverable and visible in a digital-first economy.
A National Reset Moment
I see this not as an isolated event at TCS, but as a preview of what's coming across industries. 'Healthcare, education, retail, media—AI is not knocking at the door. It's already inside. The question is: are you evolving with it or ignoring it?'
His organization has already launched bootcamps and training in regional languages like Telugu to help bridge the AI awareness gap among students, entrepreneurs, and mid-career professionals.
'We are not in an era of job scarcity. We are in an era of skill scarcity. Those who learn fast, adapt smart, and build with AI are not just safe—they're unstoppable.'
As layoffs shake the old system, voices like Nikeelu Gunda's are setting the tone for what's next—not fear, but future-readiness. Not job loss, but job transformation.
The message is loud and clear: 'The bench is gone. It's time to build.'

Best of BS Opinion: India's choices in a world of shifting alliances

Sometimes, dawn surprises us. On some mornings, when the smog lifts a little late, the sky doesn't always glow orange or pink, it burns purple, evoking an emotion that is unusual, unsettling, but undeniably striking. A purple sunrise feels unfamiliar as it is neither night nor day, neither threat nor promise, but a reminder that the world can tilt without warning. Much like this strange dawn, today's writeups capture moments of uncertainty: alliances tested, policies shifting, and futures recast in unexpected shades. Let's dive in. In Washington, a purple sun casts long shadows on India-US trade. Peter Navarro defended a 25 per cent tariff on Indian exports in the Financial Times, linking it to discounted Russian oil purchases. Yet larger buyers like China and Turkiye face no such penalty, exposing selective logic in US trade policy. With India already reducing Russian imports, the imbalance remains, notes our first editorial, and the debate now is whether New Delhi should pre-emptively lower its own tariffs to turn the purple glare into long-term advantage. Closer home, the unusual light also falls on Beijing's sudden warmth. Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi's first visit in three years promised cooperation on fertilisers, minerals, and visas, while signalling readiness for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's expected trip for the SCO summit. Disengagements on the border and resumed pilgrimages suggest easing tensions, but history shows Beijing's hues can change overnight, highlights our second editorial. For India, reducing dependence while broadening regional partnerships may be the only way to guard against sudden eclipses. Meanwhile, Shyam Saran sees the same strange dawn in Europe's courtship of Donald Trump. Leaders, eager to brand him peacemaker, endorsed territorial concessions to Russia, a diplomatic win for Moscow disguised as compromise. For Russia, it was a quiet victory and for India, the lesson is clear: avoid pandering to volatile leaders, prepare for hostile tariffs that will not vanish, and guard against 'grand bargains' that may push New Delhi to the margins. Yet amid the global haze, Vinayak Chatterjee points to the glow of opportunity within. He writes that India's Rs 1 trillion Urban Challenge Fund could finally give cities the resources to become growth hubs, provided projects are designed to attract private capital and avoid the stumbles of past schemes. With urbanisation accelerating, this could be the purple glow of opportunity on the horizon. And finally, in Gunjan Singh's review of Joseph Torigian's biography of Xi Zhongxun, the father of Xi Jinping, the theme sharpens. Xi senior's life, marked by loyalty, purges, and resilience, shows how power bends people and systems alike. It is a reminder that a purple sun rises when history itself is in flux and we must learn to read the colours before they fade. Stay tuned!

Regaal Resources IPO listing today. GMP, experts signal strong debut of shares in stock market today

Regaal Resources IPO Listing: The equity shares of maize specialty products manufacturer Regaal Resources Ltd are set to make their debut in the Indian stock market today after its initial public offering (IPO) received strong demand from investors. Regaal Resources IPO listing date is today, 20 August 2025. The mainboard IPO was open from August 12 to 14, and the IPO allotment was fixed on August 18. Regaal Resources IPO listing date is today, and the equity shares of the company will be listed on both the stock exchanges, BSE and NSE. 'Trading Members of the Exchange are hereby informed that effective from Wednesday, August 20, 2025, the equity shares of REGAAL RESOURCES LIMITED shall be listed and admitted to dealings on the Exchange in the list of 'B' Group of Securities,' a notice on the BSE said. Regaal Resources shares will be a part of Special Pre-open Session (SPOS) on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, it added, and the stock will be available for trading at 10:00 AM. Ahead of the Regaal Resources shares listing today, investors watch out for the trends in the grey market premium (GMP) to gauge the estimated listing price. Regaal Resources IPO GMP today and analysts indicate a strong debut of shares on Dalal Street. Here's what Regaal Resources IPO GMP today signals: Regaal Resources shares are trading at a strong grey market premium (GMP) today ahead of the listing. According to market experts, Regaal Resources IPO GMP today is ₹ 29 per share. Thai means that in the grey market, Regaal Resources shares are trading higher by ₹ 29 than their issue price. Regaal Resources IPO GMP today signals that the estimated listing price of the equity shares would be ₹ 131 apiece, which is at a premium of 28.5% to the IPO price of ₹ 102 per share. Bhavik Joshi Business Head, INVasset PMS said that the Regaal Resources IPO brings to market a business deeply anchored in the agricultural supply chain, with strategic proximity to India's maize heartland and export corridors to Nepal and Bangladesh. The firm's integrated ZLD (Zero Liquid Discharge) maize milling facility not only aligns with environmental compliance but also enhances operational efficiency and scalability — evident in the doubling of installed capacity to 750 MTPD in just two years. 'A deeper look at the pricing reveals limited headroom for valuation upside — at the upper band, the Regaal Resources IPO is valued at 21.98x FY25 earnings, which appears fair but leaves little room for error. The dividend discontinuity after FY23 also suggests that capital retention is currently prioritized over shareholder distributions,' said Joshi. For investors seeking exposure to India's agri-infra growth and supply chain formalization, this offering represents a niche play with operational tailwinds. However, given its full valuation and moderate return ratios, capital deployment may be more suited for those with a longer-term, sector-specific view, he added. The ₹ 306 crore worth Regaal Resources IPO was subscribed by a massive 159.88 times in total, NSE data showed. The Retail Individual Investors category was booked 57.75 times, while the Non Institutional Investors (NII) portion was subscribed 356.73 times. The Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIBs) segment received 190.97 times subscription. Pantomath Capital Advisors is the book running lead manager and MUFG Intime India is the Regaal Resources IPO registrar. Nixi plans to secure .Bharat, .India domains next year: CEO

Agencies The National Internet Exchange of India (Nixi), the nodal agency managing the country code top-level domains, aims to secure '.India' and '.Bharat' domains at the next new generic top-level domain (gTLD) round slated to open next year, its CEO said. A decision on applying for the new gTLDs during the post-first quarter of 2026 window by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) will be taken after due approval from with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Nixi chief executive Devesh Tyagi told ET. The new proposal will be for the .Bharat domain, spelled in the Latin script, he said. Nixi has already enabled .भारत domains, spelled out in all 22 official Indian languages, Tyagi said. Unlike .in, which is a country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for India, the .भारत domain is an internationalised domain name (IDN) that represents Indian official languages and early adoption was slow, Tyagi said adoption is now increasing among regional publishers, schools, and local businesses. The total number of registered .in domains has crossed 4.1 million. In comparison, registrations for .भारत and other Indian language domains are over 250,000, according to Nixi data. Nixi has also introduced third-level domain names such as . and . for the medical and travel sectors, Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) regulates the internet's protocol for domain names and numbers. Its upcoming gTLD application round is being held after 14 years. It will give Indian companies, businesses, cities, and organisations a rare chance to apply for their own domain name extensions, and 'define their own identities on the internet,' Tyagi said.'Whether it's a brand, a city, or a community, owning a gTLD gives long-term strategic value,' he international corporations like Google (.google), Microsoft (.microsoft), and Barclays (.barclays) already operate their own extensions, India's footprint in the last round was modest. Only a handful of Indian companies applied, and even fewer moved forward with active there are more than 1,200 gTLDs, the majority of which are in English, such as .com, .org, .biz, or . believes securing a custom domain can help local businesses establish global credibility, much like geographic TLDs such as .nyc and .rio have done for cities. Established in 2003 as a non-profit, Nixi plays a central role in managing India's internet domains and supporting a multilingual digital ecosystem in the country, and operates several internet exchange points (IXPs) to enable efficient domestic traffic routing. Local internet While currently there are 77 IXPs nationwide, Tyagi said this needs to be massively expanded to improve ground-level are crucial for keeping local internet traffic local.'This reduces latency cuts, transit costs, and improves speed,' Tyagi said. 'Beyond technical performance, our IXPs help democracy access by spreading infrastructure into tier-2 and tier-3 cities. We are reducing dependence on a few large hubs and making internet access more affordable in underserved areas,' he stressed.
