UAE Central Bank suspends bank's Islamic window from onboarding new customers for six months
The UAE Central Bank has suspended the Islamic window of a bank operating in the country from onboarding new customers for six months and also fined it more than Dh3.5 million ($953,632) for non-compliance with Sharia governance rules.
The sanctions were imposed following the banking regulator's Sharia supervision examination, which found breaches by the bank, the Central Bank said on Wednesday. The name of the lender was not disclosed.
'The Central Bank, through its supervisory and regulatory mandates, endeavours to ensure that all banks and their staff, abide by the UAE laws, regulations and standards … to maintain transparency and integrity of the banking sector and safeguard the UAE financial system,' it said.
The banking regulator has been cracking down heavily on regulatory non-compliance in recent weeks.
On Tuesday, it imposed a Dh2 million fine on an exchange house for failing to comply with the country's anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing (AML/CFT) policies and procedures.
Last month, it also imposed a Dh100 million fine on an exchange house for 'significant failures' in its AML/CFT framework and related regulations.
It also fined an exchange house Dh200 million for the same offence in May. A Dh500,000 fine was also imposed on a branch manager, who was banned from working in any licensed financial institutions in the UAE.
Earlier this month, the European Commission, the EU's main executive body, removed the UAE from its list of countries that pose a high risk for money laundering, amid growing efforts by the Emirates to boost its regulatory framework.
The commission said the list was updated after taking into account the work of the Financial Action Task Force.
The updated list will come into force after it receives 'no‑objection' from the European Parliament and the council within one month, which can be extended for another month.
The FATF, the global body that combats money laundering and terrorism financing, removed the UAE from its 'grey list' in February last year after significant progress on reforms. The Emirates was placed on the grey list in 2022.

Dubai traffic: New projects cut travel time, increase road capacity by 100% in Business Bay
A series of road improvement projects in Business Bay has eased traffic congestion in the area. A two-lane, two-way street parallel to Sheikh Zayed Road was converted into a one-way dual roadway, with updated signage and road markings. This increased the street's capacity by 100 per cent, and improved overall traffic flow. The project carried out by Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) involved expanding and upgrading several locations along the street, which connects directly to Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road, aiming to enhance traffic flow and road safety in the Business Bay area. These will support smoother traffic flow, increased safety, and reduced travel times, thus improving the overall experience for road users, especially in high-density areas. A district that hosts a diverse mix of residential, commercial, and service facilities, Business Bay is also popular among tourists for its proximity to Downtown Dubai and views of the Dubai Canal. Earlier, some of those living and working in Business Bay had shared how during peak rush hour, they waited more than 30 minutes just to exit their building parking. Other improvements A 100-metre-long storage lane was added at the intersection of Al Mustaqbal Street with Al Khaleej Al Tejari 1 Street to increase right-turn capacity towards First Al Khail Street by up to 50 per cent. This reduced congestion, shortened waiting times, and boosted the intersection's capacity and level of service. Improvements were also carried out where the service road parallel to Al Mustaqbal Street was reorganised, and an additional lane was introduced to accommodate rising traffic volumes. This step increased road capacity by approximately 50 per cent and reduced traffic conflicts, enhancing overall traffic movement. RTA also expanded the entry point to the bridge on Al Mustaqbal Street over the canal in the direction of First Al Khail Street from one lane to two, doubling its capacity. This measure eased traffic pressure during peak hours and improved vehicle flow along this critical corridor.

UAE: Fake rental, job ads among top online scams, say Ajman Police
A surge in fake advertisements and suspicious links to lure unsuspecting recipients with seemingly attractive offers has prompted a response from authorities. These fraudulent schemes range from bogus farm and resort rental ads, sales promotions boasting unrealistic prices, and text messages impersonating banks or government agencies to suspicious sales links that can lead directly to hacking or the theft of funds. To bolster community security and combat digital crimes, the Ajman Police, represented by the Criminal Investigations Department and the Media and Public Relations Department, has launched a comprehensive awareness campaign titled 'Your Security is in Your Awareness.' The initiative aims to significantly elevate public awareness regarding various methods of electronic fraud, with a particular focus on deceptive advertisements and online scams. Colonel Ahmed Al Nuaimi, Director of the Criminal Investigations Department at Ajman Police, underscored the campaign's critical objective. 'This campaign is designed to educate the public against electronic fraud aimed at stealing money and against deceptive advertisements and suspicious links that promise enticing offers,' he stated. He elaborated on the common tactics, including 'fake farm and resort rental advertisements, sales ads claiming attractive prices, text messages impersonating banks or government entities, and suspicious sales links that could lead to hacking or financial theft." Al Nuaimi further emphasised the importance of vigilance, noting that fraudsters continually innovate their methods. He warned against 'advertisements for buying, selling, and renting at attractive and unrealistic prices, as well as ads for recruiting domestic workers and job offers with tempting salaries,' among other ploys used to mislead and ensnare targets. The Ajman Police urged the public to exercise extreme caution and verify the authenticity of advertisements on social media platforms and the legitimacy of links before taking any action that could result in financial loss. In January, Dubai police arrested a gang involved in luring and scamming victims through fake links and pretending to be well-known organisations, including restaurants and delivery companies, and offering promotional deals. The cybercriminals operated by sending SMS messages, emails and online links that appeared to come from trusted companies. The community is encouraged to cooperate with the police by reporting any attempted fraud or suspicious advertisements through the 'Share with Security' service available on the Ajman Police smart application, or by contacting the dedicated number 067037309.
