Did You Know THIS Sholay Actor Once Sold Soap And Sifted Rat Sh*t to Eat Bread Crumbs!

News1823-07-2025
Sholay actor Jagdeep once lived on the streets, sold soap, and sifted rat droppings from bread crumbs to survive. His journey is truly inspiring.
Sholay is one of the most loved films in Bollywood to date. The action drama didn't just receive praise but is adored to such an extent that people remember each and every scene of the movie by heart. While Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, and Hema Malini's characters received high acclaim, the actors who played supporting roles, including Asrani and Jagdeep, also received immense love from the audience.
But did you know Jagdeep, whose character Soorma Bhopali is still remembered for his dialogue, 'Humara naam Soorma Bhopali aise hi nahi hai," had to fish out bread crumbs from a pool of rat faeces during his struggling days? His journey from a challenging childhood to becoming a well-known comedian is nothing short of inspirational.
Jagdeep was born in Gwalior during the pre-Partition days, and after his father's demise, his mother took him to Karachi. They later shifted to Mumbai. When one of his brothers abandoned them, and with no money in their pockets, they had to take shelter on the streets of the city.
'My father saw the bloodshed in the trains, the riots… When he came to Bombay, somehow there was no connect with his brothers. He lived on the streets with his mother," his son and actor Jaaved Jaaferi shared with Rediff a few years ago.
Jagdeep once lived under a bridge in Byculla, selling soaps and kites to earn whatever little he could. His mother worked as a cook at an orphanage, while he took up odd jobs to help make ends meet.
'When they did not have money, a bakery would sell the bread crumbs fallen on the floor for one paisa in a newspaper. But before eating, they had to take out the rat and cockroach sh*t from the crumbs," his son recalled.
Jagdeep got his first break in films when someone came looking for kids for B.R. Chopra's Afsana. He jumped at the chance after hearing he'd earn Rs 3 for the role. On set, he discovered that those who could speak Urdu would be paid Rs 6, so he seized the opportunity eagerly. Interestingly, up until that point, Jagdeep had never even seen a film.
Jagdeep rose to prominence for his role as Soorma Bhopali in Sholay. Sholay (1975) is a landmark Bollywood action-drama directed by Ramesh Sippy. Set in the fictional village of Ramgarh, it follows two ex-convicts, Jai and Veeru (played by Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra), who a retired police officer hires, Thakur Baldev Singh (Sanjeev Kumar), to capture the ruthless dacoit Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan).

Ramayana Actor Ravie Dubey Celebrates 'Queen' Sargun Mehta's 10 Years In Punjabi Cinema

Last Updated: Sargun Mehta marked 10 years in Punjabi cinema, transforming it with hits like Angrej and Qismat. Her husband Ravie Dubey called her the 'Queen' of Punjabi industry for her vision. Actor Sargun Mehta has completed 10 years in Punjabi cinema — a decade that has not only redefined success but also reshaped the very foundation of the regional industry. Marking the occasion, her husband and creative partner, actor Ravie Dubey, who plays Laxman in Ranbir Kapoor-led Ramayana, shared a deeply moving note on social media, calling her the 'Queen of Punjabi Industry" and crediting her vision for building a creative ecosystem in Punjab. 'The Queen Sargun Mehta completes 10 glorious years in Punjabi cinema. But she didn't stop at being an actor, she went far, far beyond that," Ravie wrote, expressing pride in her transformative contributions both on and off screen. Sargun's journey began after a successful stint in Hindi television with shows like 12/24 Karol Bagh and Balika Vadhu. In 2015, she took a bold leap into Punjabi cinema with Angrej, which went on to become a major box office success. Since then, her filmography has been marked by critically acclaimed and commercially successful projects including Qismat, Love Punjab, Lahoriye, Qismat 2, Jind Mahi, Saunkan Saunkne, and this year's blockbuster hits Saunkan Saunkanay 2 and Sarbala Ji. But Sargun's impact goes beyond her on-screen presence. In 2021, she co-founded Dreamiyata Entertainment with Ravie Dubey, becoming the first actress to produce Punjabi-language television content for a national channel. Their show Udaariyaan, aired on Colors TV, became a long-running success and set a precedent for regional storytelling on mainstream platforms. 'She has built an unprecedented ecosystem for the Indian television industry right here in Punjab," Ravie wrote. 'For the past five years, hundreds of people have been working, creating, thriving — because of one woman's vision, faith, and relentless prayers." View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ravie Dubey (@ravidubey2312) 'She has Maa Annapurna's blessings. Wherever Sargun steps, that place begins to prosper. My life included," Ravie added, concluding his post with a heartfelt message: 'I'm the luckiest man alive — to be her partner in life, both personally and professionally. May God bless you always, my darling. This is just the beginning." An overwhelmed Sargun wrote in the comment box, 'You celebrate me like no other… I am queen only because I am your queen my king." As Sarbala Ji continues its successful theatrical run and Saunkan Saunkanay 2 stands as the biggest Punjabi hit of the year, Sargun Mehta's legacy only grows stronger. view comments First Published: July 31, 2025, 21:39 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Jeremy Allen White, Mikey Madison To Team Up For The Social Network Sequel? What We Know

Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White may star in The Social Network II, written by Aaron Sorkin, focusing on Facebook's impact. Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White are reportedly being eyed for the long-rumoured sequel to The Social Network. Insiders close to the film's writer, Aaron Sorkin have told Deadline he has the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood star, 26, and The Bear actor, 34, in mind for the leading roles in The Social Network II. However, it's still early days and no formal offers have been made, as the team are still figuring out the budget and fine-tuning the script, per the outlet. The Academy Award winning filmmaker is said to have already written a screenplay for a sequel to his 2010 blockbuster, which starred Jesse Eisenberg as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and told the story of the social media platform's creation. As recently reported by Deadline, Sorkin is set to direct the follow-up, which comes 15 years after David Fincher was at the helm for the original. According to the outlet, sources say the upcoming movie will not be a straight sequel, but instead a 'follow-up to the original movie" which explored the platform's origins. It's said the screenplay delves into the story behind the Wall Street Journal's Facebook Files, which were a series of October 2021 articles by Jeff Horowitz. The pieces sought to expose Facebook's inner workings, and the harms caused by them. The focus won't all be on the suggestion that Facebook played a role in the January 6, 2020 attack on the US Capitol. It will also delve into the impact the site has on teenagers and preteens, as well as violence, and its wider effect on countries around the world. Back in 2021, Sorkin opened up on his plans for a sequel, insisting 'what has been going on with Facebook these last few years is a story very much worth telling." At the time, he suggested a sequel relied on Fincher agreeing to return to helm the follow-up. Last year, he insisted he 'blamed Facebook" for the US Capitol attack, but teased The Town podcast listeners that they would 'need to buy a movie ticket" to find out why. He did reveal that he'd started writing a sequel, and offered a hint about what direction that was taking. He said, 'Facebook has been, among other things, tuning its algorithm to promote the most divisive material possible. Because that is what will increase engagement. That is what will get you to — what they call inside the hallways of Facebook — 'the infinite scroll'… There's supposed to be a constant tension at Facebook between growth and integrity. There isn't. It's just growth." It's not yet known if Eisenberg will return as Zuckerberg. First Published: July 31, 2025, 21:12 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
