Umno respects political freedom, but Cabinet posts tied to party, says Azalina
KUALA LUMPUR, June 1 — UMNO respects the freedom of individuals to make their own political choices, said the party's Information Chief, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.
She stressed, however, that ministerial positions within the Cabinet are held based on the mandate of the party represented, and not in a personal capacity.
'Although the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) chairs the Unity Government Leadership Consultative Council, every appointed minister serves as the official representative of their respective party,' she said in a statement today.
Azalina, who is also Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), reaffirmed UMNO's commitment to continue serving the nation within the framework of the Unity Government and to uphold the trust of the people.
She also called on all party members and supporters to remain focused on national development.
'An individual's political stance may change, but the party's struggle for religion, race and country must remain steadfast,' Azalina said.
She added that UMNO's Legal Bureau has been tasked with reviewing the implications of the Anti-Party Hopping Act, including the status of a senator, to ensure that any further action complies with the legal framework.
Last Friday, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, who is also the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, announced his resignation as a member of the UMNO Supreme Council, chief of the Kota Raja Division and a party member, expressing his intention to join Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR). — Bernama

Man suspected of murdering wife remanded in Johor

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : An unemployed man suspected of killing his wife with a vegetable knife before setting several cars on fire at Taman Cahaya, Bukit Gambir in Johor, has been remanded for seven days. Berita Harian reported that magistrate Lee Kim Keat allowed the police's application today to remand the 33-year-old in an investigation under Sections 302 and 435 of the Penal Code for murder and mischief by fire. In the Monday evening incident, the man allegedly slashed his 34-year-old wife, who worked as a clerk, to death in a residential area in Bukit Gambir. He then fled to his in-laws' house in Kampung Durian Chondong where he set several vehicles on fire. The New Straits Times reported that he walked into the Bukit Gambir police station at around 7am yesterday and told the cops he had slashed his wife and committed arson. According to the report, police found the woman's body lying under a blanket with neck injuries and a blood-stained knife in the living room. The man, who was arrested at his home, tested negative for drugs.

Cops to summon organisers of LGBT event in PJ

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Police will summon the organisers of a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) programme here to record their statements. Bukit Aman criminal investigation department (CID) director Shuhaily Zain said the number of reports received over the event has risen from 21 to 188. 'We will be summoning the organisers to record their statements in the near future,' he was quoted by Berita Harian as saying. On Saturday, Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said his team had detected a post on social media, believed made by the youth wing of a political party, planning to organise the programme on June 21. Investigations are being conducted under Section 298A of the Penal Code (causing disharmony, hatred or ill will on the grounds of religion) and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (improper use of network facilities). Hussein reminded members of the public not to participate in the programme, which is seen as violating the country's laws that do not support any form of LGBT practices.

Man arrested, 70kg of ganja seized in Taman Melawati

(AFP pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Police have arrested a man suspected of being a drug dealer and seized 69.82kg ganja during a raid at a house in Taman Melawati last Thursday. Bukit Aman narcotics criminal investigation department (NCID) acting director Mat Zani@Salahuddin Che Ali said police discovered 66 compressed packages of ganja, worth RM216,457, in a Toyota Vellfire during the search of the house. He said the 44-year-old suspect is believed to have been active since November last year and has two prior records related to crime and drug offences. 'Further investigation revealed that the drugs were smuggled in from a neighbouring country through the Perlis border before being transported to the Klang Valley for distribution in the local market,' he said in a statement today. Mat Zani said his team had also taken action under the Dangerous Drugs (Forfeiture of Property) Act 1988 by seizing a Ducati motorcycle belonging to the suspect, valued at approximately RM29,500, bringing the total value of the seizure to RM245,957. 'The results of the initial screening test showed that the suspect tested negative for drugs. He has been remanded for seven days until June 5 to assist in investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952,' he added.
