The money-laundering case against Chhangur Baba alias Jalaluddin alias Karimulla Shah stems from a recent Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) FIR filed at a police station in Lucknow's Gomti Nagar under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, 2021.
Chhangur Baba, his son Mehboob and alleged associates Naveen Rohra alias Jamaluddin and Neetu alias Nasreen were arrested by the ATS. They are currently lodged in jail.
The ATS complaint alleges a "large-scale" conspiracy involving unlawful religious conversions, utilisation of foreign funds and activities posing a potential threat to national security.

"Chhangur Baba and his associates are alleged to have established an extensive network operating from the premises of the Chand Auliya Dargah in Balrampur, where he regularly organised large gatherings attended by both Indian and foreign nationals.
"He is accused of systematically inducing, coercing and manipulating individuals of other faiths, particularly Scheduled Castes and economically disadvantaged persons belonging to Hindu religion, into religious conversion," the ED said.
The agency said it has analysed 22 bank accounts related to Chhangur Baba and his associates and it was found that funds worth more than Rs 60 crore were received by him and his associates.
"It was also found that a large amount of funds has been received from foreign countries by Chhangur Baba and his associates," it said.
The searches also led to the seizure of a number of documents that show that "proceeds of crime" (illicit funds) were majorly transferred to different people for purchasing a number of immovable properties worth crores of rupees and carrying out construction activities in these properties.
All the immovable assets acquired by Chhangur Baba are in the names of his associates, Naveen Rohra and Neetu Rohra, to conceal his actual involvement in money laundering, the ED said.
Following the arrest of Chhangur Baba, alleged illegal constructions linked to him in Balrampur were razed by the district administration. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had described the actions of the accused as not only anti-social but also "anti-national".

HC orders state to pay Rs 1.5L ex gratia to kin of 2 workers killed in 2013 landslide
1 2 3 Cuttack: Orissa high court has ordered the state govt to pay Rs 1.5 lakh each as ex gratia along with interest to the families of two labourers who died in a landslide in Nayagarh in 2013, quashing the district administration's decision to deny the relief. Justice Aditya Kumar Mohapatra, while delivering the judgments on July 10, ruled in favour of the families of Taleswar Jani and Krushna Chandra Mallik, who were killed while working on a road construction project in Sirikibadi village under Banigochha police station limits on July 17, 2013. Both were buried alive in a sudden landslide during heavy rainfall. However, the Nayagarh collector rejected their families' applications for compensation on June 17, 2022, citing that rainfall on the day of the landslide was below the "standard threshold" prescribed under the Odisha Relief Code. Calling the rejection "highly arbitrary and unreasonable", the court observed, "Having such a condition as a yardstick to grant compensation is irrational. The state, being a welfare state, must act fairly and reasonably. Viewed from a constitutional perspective, the rejection cannot be justified as being in public interest." The petitions were filed by Jani's wife, Surama Jani, and son, Jayram Jani, and Mallik's wife, Rasana Mallik, and daughter, Ranjita Mallik. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Learn How To Write Faster for Work (Find Out Now) Grammarly Learn More Undo The court held that the cause of death — a landslide — was undisputed, and that compensation under the relief code was applicable. "The impugned orders rejecting the claim of the petitioners are hereby quashed," the order stated. The state has been directed to pay Rs 1.5 lakh to each family, along with interest calculated from the date of their application. The amount must be paid within two months of receiving a certified copy of the judgment. In case of delay, an interest of 12% per annum will be levied until full payment is made. Legal experts said the ruling underscores the need for humane and rational application of disaster relief policies and may have wider implications for similar cases pending across the state.

Thousands of mule accounts fueling cyber fraud in AP
Visakhapatnam: Investigating agencies probing financial cyber frauds reported in Vizag, Vijayawada, and other parts of Andhra Pradesh have found that mule bank accounts often become a dead end. By the time victims realise they've been defrauded and approach the police, a large portion of their money is already lost. These mule accounts are typically used only once, making it difficult to trace the criminals or recover the siphoned funds. Though Vizag city police have cracked a few rackets involved in opening mule bank accounts used by cybercrooks to park and operate their ill-gotten gains, they observed that thousands of such accounts are still active. Several gangs lure people — including unemployed youth — with promises of easy money, open fake companies and bank accounts in their names, and then sell them to cybercriminal networks. A senior police officer from the cybercrime wing said that these mule accounts, opened using fake IDs for limited one-time use, were detected during search operations. Investigations further revealed that Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka are among the principal states with notably high numbers of mule bank accounts. Andhraites are losing at least Rs 50 crore monthly due to various forms of cyber fraud — including investment scams, digital arrest schemes, and task-based cons — that originate mainly from Cambodia and other Southeast Asian nations. Despite rising cases, the recovery rate remains below 20 percent. AP police now face the daunting task of verifying more than 30,000 bank accounts (mostly mule accounts) in connection with financial cybercrimes reported from Vizag, Vijayawada, and other towns. Inspector of Cybercrime Police Station, Vizag, K Bhavani Prasad, stated that in most cases, mule accounts are opened in the name of individuals who are often unaware their accounts are being exploited for illegal transactions. These accounts are typically used only once: once the stolen money is received, it is quickly transferred to other accounts, and the original account is closed. This makes it extremely difficult to gauge the full scope of the fraud or recover the stolen funds. Explaining the modus operandi, Bhavani Prasad said that gangs target laborers and low-income individuals, borrow their documents to open bank accounts, collect their debit cards, and pay them Rs 5,000 in return. These gangs also create fake companies using the identities of unsuspecting individuals. Once the shell companies are registered, accounts are opened in their names and sold to cybercriminal networks.
