Pete Samu absence provides extra motivation, claims coach of Lions' opponents
The composite team replaced the Melbourne Rebels in the Lions' touring schedule after they entered administration and the terms of agreement for the game state only those currently attached to Super Rugby franchises can be selected.
Australia number eight Samu, who has spent the last two seasons at French club Bordeaux, was able to play for the AUNZ Invitational XV that faced the Lions in Adelaide last Saturday because that match operated under different terms.
The Lions say they did not object to Samu's selection for Tuesday's showdown at Marvel Stadium but Rugby Australia are understood to dispute this.
On the eve of the first Test in Brisbane, First Nations and Pasifika head coach Toutai Kefu said the row would provide his players with ammunition to cause a famous upset.
'I'm absolutely gutted, I still can't believe that they would do it, complain about it, I suppose it is what it is, but it's extra motivation for our boys,' Kefu said.
'We're a team that's just been put together, we're facing a massive challenge as it is, so he (Samu) would have definitely strengthened us, there's no doubt about that.
'They must have been worried we were going to win. I don't know why they would do it.'
RA is disappointed that Samu will not be in action in the fixture that takes place between the first and second Tests.
'Pete Samu is a valued member of the Waratahs and has added greatly to the First Nations & Pasifika squad since entering camp. We had naturally hoped he would be playing in this fixture,' an RA spokesperson said.

Christopher Nkunku approves transfer to new club as Chelsea make two demands
Christopher Nkunku has approved a move to Bayern Munich but the Bundesliga champions still face a battle to reach a transfer agreement with Chelsea. Chelsea have put Nkunku up for sale this summer after another underwhelming season for the French forward at Stamford Bridge. Nkunku could blame injuries for his poor first season in the Premier League but that was not a reasonable excuse last term as he scored just three league goals. Much was expected of Nkunku following his £52m move from RB Leipzig in 2023 given he was the top goalscorer in the Bundesliga during his final season in Germany. Nkunku was also named the Bundesliga player of the season earlier in his Leipzig career, but that form has been non-existent in two disappointing years at Stamford Bridge. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – sign up, it's an open goal. A number of domestic and foreign clubs have expressed interest in signing Nkunku and Chelsea offered the France international back to RB Leipzig during transfer talks for Xavi Simons. But Nkunku rejected a return to his former club due to their absence from this season's Champions League, while Leipzig even had reservations themselves given his inflated salary in west London. Nkunku has no such concerns about a move to Bayern Munich, however, and has indicated he is open and willing to move to the Allianz Arena this summer. The 27-year-old's desire to join Bayern comes as no surprise given their status as one of the biggest clubs in the world. Nkunku agreed to join the German giants back in January but Bayern Munich were unable to reach an agreement with Chelsea over a fee. The Blues were optimistically holding out for £70m at the start of the year but have halved their asking price this summer. Bayern sporting director Max Eberl is said to 'love' Nkunku's versatility but it remains to be seen whether they are willing to meet Chelsea's valuation. Another potential stumbling block is Chelsea's insistence that Nkunku leave on a permanent transfer. RB Leipzig, for example, were keen on a loan deal. Bayern have revived their interest in Nkunku as Kingsley Coman closes in on a lucrative move to Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr. Vincent Kompany's side have already spent £65.5m to sign Luis Diaz from Liverpool but rejected the chance to sign Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund. More Trending Hojlund has been offered to a number of clubs after United signed Benjamin Sesko as Ruben Amorim's new first-choice striker. The sale of Nkunku will likely clear Chelsea to complete a deal for Netherlands playmaker Simons, who is valued at around £60m by RB Leipzig. Chelsea are also open to offers for Nicolas Jackson following the summer additions of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap. Enzo Maresca's side, who won the Club World Cup in the off-season, face London rivals Crystal Palace in their Premier League opener on Sunday. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Gianluigi Donnarumma's stance on Man Utd transfer as PSG exit confirmed
Manchester United have been linked with a swoop for Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma with a decision from the French club adding to the noise Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has confirmed he will leave the club this summer. However, potential suitors Manchester United are steering themselves away from the Italian, who was never overly keen on joining them anyway. Donnarumma started for PSG as they won last season's Champions League and reached the final of the Club World Cup. His PSG career is now over though, with Lucas Chevalier joining from Lille and Donnarumma announcing his departure on Tuesday night. PSG have named their squad for the Super Cup against Tottenham Hotspur, who beat United in the Europa League final in May and Donnarumma isn't in it. Chevalier has been joined by Matvey Safonov and Renato Marin, with last season's first choice keeper nowhere to be seen. His absence has prompted increased talk of a Premier League switch, with United, Manchester City and Chelsea strongly linked with him, with City said the be front-runners according to reports in France. United, meanwhile, are distancing themselves from reports of their interest. Ruben Amorim's side have shown ambition by spending £200m on a flurry of attacking talent, but aren't in Europe this season, something which is a key requirement of Donnarummma's. Chelsea had also been linked with Donnarumma, but the Blues are believed to be happy with current keepers Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen. Belgian youngster Mike Penders is also highly regarded in West London, and is spending the current season on loan at Strasbourg. According to reports in Italy, Galatasaray and Bayern Munich are among the other clubs able to match the Italian's wage demands. Both clubs are involved in the Champions League, with Gala already flexing their muscles with big contracts for Victor Osimhen and Leroy Sane. If United did move for Donnarumma, it would likely mean an exit for one of Andre Onana or Altay Bayindir. Turkish keeper Bayindir has played regularly in pre-season as Onana works his way back to full fitness, but the Cameroon international may be ready to return against Arsenal on Sunday. "For us, it doesn't matter which team we will play," Bayindir told club media after helping United beat Fiorentina on penalties on Saturday. "Every game is important in the Premier League. This week, we will work for Arsenal, and then from the Arsenal game, step by step for the next game, we will prepare ourselves." United's opponents have added a new keeper themselves this summer, though he is unlikely to start on Sunday. Spanish international Kepa Arrizabalaga joined in a cut-price move from Chelsea, but remains second choice behind David Raya. The Sunday clash will also allow Viktor Gyokeres to face off against his former manager Ruben Amorim. A reunion for the ex-Sporting pair had looked possible early in the window, but Gyokeres instead moved to North London in a £64m deal.

Gianluigi Donnarumma confirms PSG exit as star takes pointed swipe at Luis Enrique
The Italy No.1 has been linked with moves to Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea this summer, and he has now confirmed that he will leave PSG Gianluigi Donnarumma has announced he is leaving Paris Saint-Germain as the Italian goalkeeper took aim at boss Luis Enrique. Donnarumma - a European champion with Italy in 2021 and a Champions League winner with PSG in May - has been involved in a contractual dispute with the French club over the past season, and with just one year left on his deal PSG will now seek to sell him to the Premier League. Chelsea and both Manchester clubs have been linked with a move for the 26-year-old, and on Tuesday night he announced he would be leaving the French capital in a fiery statement on Instagram. "To the special Paris fans, From the first day I arrived, I gave everything – on and off the pitch – to earn my place and defend the goal of Paris Saint-Germain. "Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team's success. "I am disappointed and disheartened. I hope to have the opportunity to look the fans at the Parc des Princes in the eyes one more time and say goodbye as it should be done. "If that doesn't happen, I want you to know that your support and affection mean the world to me, and I will never forget it. I will always carry with me the memory of all the emotions, the magical nights, and of you, who made me feel at home. "To my teammates – my second family – thank you for every battle, every laugh, every moment we shared. You will always be my brothers. Playing for this club and living in this city has been an immense honour. Thank you, Paris." Earlier Enrique had confirmed that he had left Donnarumma out of his squad for Wednesday night's European Super Cup clash with Tottenham in Udine. 'Donnarumma is out of the squad as it's my own decision. I am 100 per cent responsible," said Enrique. "I want a different kind of goalkeeper and I made this decision. Gigio is one of the best goalkeepers in the whole world. 'The life of a top-level footballer, and the same goes for us coaches, is this: it wasn't an easy decision but I take full responsibility for it. On the other hand, if these choices were easy, anyone could make them.'
