Why America plays a Russian tune on Independence Day
Why it matters: It's a staple for Fourth of July celebrations nationwide despite its roots in a major Russian military victory.
Driving the news: The Houston Symphony will round out Friday's free Star-Spangled Salute at Miller Outdoor Theatre with the overture before fireworks light up the skies over Hermann Park.
The intrigue: Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote the piece in 1880 to commemorate the nation's victory over the French during the Napoleonic invasion in 1812, which turned the tides of war.
Yes, but: American symphonies and orchestras nationwide play it on America's Independence Day, often during fireworks, timing larger displays with the score's crescendoes.
Flashback: The Boston Pops first paired the Russian overture with a fireworks show during its 1974 Independence Day concert, the New York Times reported in 1998.
The coupling was an effort to attract more people to the show by playing the piece — complete with real howitzer cannon fire written into the finale — and pop off fireworks at the same time.
Two years later, it became a staple when 400,000 people witnessed the performance and fireworks during the 1976 American Bicentennial celebration in Boston.

Dana White says UFC fight on the White House lawn is 'absolutely' happening
A UFC fight at the White House looks primed to take place on the Fourth of July next year. 'It's absolutely going to happen,' UFC CEO and President Dana White told The Associated Press in a story published Aug. 12. White's comments come on the heels of a billion-dollar deal to bring UFC to CBS that was announced on Monday, Aug. 11. The agreement will give CBS and streaming service Paramount+ exclusive rights to broadcast 30 UFC Fight Nights and 13 marquee events each year beginning 2026, which could include the Fourth of July brawl at the White House. 'Think about that, the 250th birthday of the United States of America, the UFC will be on the White House south lawn live on CBS," White told the AP. White is scheduled to travel to Washington, D.C. on Aug. 28 to meet with Trump and his daughter, Ivanka, to discuss plans for the fight, the AP reported. The deal between UFC and CBS was announced just days after the network and Skydance officially closed an $8 billion merger and doubles the annual value of UFC's current U.S. rights deal with ESPN+, according to reporting from Sportico. The deal also signals the end of the existing pay-per-view model currently utilized by the UFC. Trump floated idea of UFC fight at White House this past 4th of July Trump first floated the idea of having a UFC fight on White House grounds on this past Fourth of July. "Every one of our national park battlefields and historic sites are going to have special events in honor of America 250," Trump said. "And I even think we're going to have a UFC fight. We're going to have a UFC fight on the grounds of the White House." "Championship fight − full fight," he added. Trump, no stranger to the mixed martial arts scene, has attended multiple events in the past, including UFC 309 at Madison Square Garden after winning the 2024 presidential election. White also introduced Trump on the stage on the final night of the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. The first UFC fight held under the ownership of White and his partners was held at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. Trump "gave us our start when nobody would talk to us," White told Fox News in 2018. Trump's White House staff has ties to the mixed martial arts organization. After his campaign win in November 2024, Trump named Steven Cheung, a former UFC spokesperson, as the White House communications director. Where to find girl dinner in New Orleans
A small handful of New Orleans restaurants are now offering "girl dinner" specials, serving up price fixe meals in a nod to a delicious viral trend. Why it matters: The perfect restaurant order does exist. Catch up quick: The phenomenon may have always existed but it got a name when TikTok user Olivia Maher was — delightfully — on a self-described "hot girl walk" with a friend and thought up the title. Maher told the New York Times that the pair were extolling the virtues of a simple meal of bread and cheese. "It feels like such a girl dinner because we do it when our boyfriends aren't around and we don't have to have what's a 'typical dinner' — essentially, with a protein and a veggie and a starch," Ms. Maher said. The term caught on, and one of the most popular iterations of the meal is a salad, French fries and a cocktail or Diet Coke. Here's where to find girl dinner -inspired specials in New Orleans: 🍸 JusTini's offers " girl lunch" on weekdays from 11am to 3pm. The $25 deal includes a Caesar salad, truffle fries and a martini or lemon drop cocktail. 🍟 Junior's on Harrison offers $7 truffle fries, Caesar salads, martinis and frozen drinks on Thursdays.

Boston Symphony Orchestra choral director departing
Advertisement In an internal statement sent to BSO staff in late spring by vice president of artistic planning Anthony Fogg, which was recently shared with the Globe by the BSO, Burton said that he and the TFC had 'enjoyed countless musical adventures, performed many concerts and explored exciting special projects' together. 'It is the passionate dedication of our chorus members who make this possible, and I appreciate hugely their commitment to singing with the BSO and the Boston Pops,' he wrote. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up In the same statement, orchestra leaders praised Burton's contributions to the organization during his eight-year tenure. BSO music director Andris Nelsons said Burton's 'immense dedication and passion' had 'guided and led the chorus towards tremendous musical achievements.' BSO president and CEO Chad Smith said that the TFC 'has grown substantially under his leadership, achieving an impressive level of musical excellence,' and Boston Pops conductor Keith Lockhart said Burton has been a 'transformative presence' who 'elevated the standard for choral singing within our organization.' Advertisement Burton is only the second director in the history of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, having stepped into the newly created position of BSO choral director after the 2015 retirement of founding TFC director David Norris, who sang tenor in the TFC for 44 years before retiring last fall, said in a phone interview that Burton expected singers in the all-volunteer ensemble to be invested 'not only in [their] vocal health but [their] skills as a musician,' and he saw that 'reflected in the excellence from the chorus.' Norris said that under Oliver's leadership, re-auditions of existing members were conducted on an as-needed basis, but Burton implemented them as an annual routine, which made for a significant change. In June 2018, shortly after Burton arrived, several singers Globe they had been sent an unsigned form email informing them they'd been cut, while others chose to resign rather than re-audition. One singer who resigned called the situation a 'bloodbath' and 'really unconscionable.' Advertisement In a Norris, who was the chair of the chorus committee for part of Burton's tenure, said in a recent phone interview that every leader develops 'their own culture and community' with the chorus. Burton, he said, was all about continuous improvement. 'No matter what we did, what piece we were performing, whether it was an incredibly involved piece with the symphony or Holiday Pops – at every rehearsal he was striving to continue to tweak and improve our performance. James is somebody who never settled,' Norris said. In the internal statement, Fogg wrote that potential candidates for the choral director position would be invited to Boston during the 2025-26 season. 'This is an extraordinary time of renewal at the BSO, and I am certain we will have great candidates,' he wrote. A.Z. Madonna can be reached at
