Thailand seeks concert hub status
According to the Tourism and Sports Ministry, Thailand is in the process of developing itself as an entertainment hub, lining up new concerts.
If a contract is signed, Tomorrowland would debut in 2026, and stadium revamps are planned to attract high-spending tourists, lifting local income.
On July 29, the cabinet approved a feasibility study on hosting Tomorrowland in Thailand, as proposed by the Tourism and Sports Ministry and the Tourism Authority of Thailand. This move stirred public debate last week, with some expressing concern over the large budget.
According to the cabinet statement, over five years the festival is expected to generate 12 billion baht in revenue, attracting more than 922,500 visitors, with Pattaya set as the destination.
Thailand's inferior infrastructure is often listed as a persistent obstacle for events, but a more complete mass transit system in Bangkok is slated for the coming years, helping to ease traffic flow.
The Orange Line is scheduled to start operations in 2027, serving visitors headed to Rajamangala Stadium.
This year the Pink Line monorail was extended to Impact Muang Thong Thani, offering two stops at Thailand's largest indoor meeting space.
Despite being the most popular venue for large events, Rajamangala Stadium, the largest outdoor stadium in Thailand, has consistently faced criticism from concertgoers due to outdated facilities and inconvenience.
Gongsak Yodmanee, governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT), said while the agency prioritises football and sporting events at the stadium, it also uses the venue for concerts and shows to generate additional revenue.
The 50,000-seat stadium hosts roughly 10 concerts per year, generating millions of baht for the Ramkhamhaeng area, including local shops, restaurants and hotels, from at least 10,000 visitors per concert.
He said the venue was contacted by a promoter to host a Taylor Swift concert a few years ago, but due to scheduling conflicts between the singer and the venue, Singapore was ultimately chosen.
This year the SAT received an additional budget of around 100 million baht from the economic stimulus programme to renovate Rajamangala Stadium, including toilets and lighting systems, in preparation for the SEA Games in December.
For its long-term plan, the agency is continuing with a massive overhaul to modernise and improve functionality, seeking opportunities from private investors.
BOON FOR HOTELS
Piti Kuakiatngam, general manager of Alexander Hotel Bangkok, said attracting new events and festivals would lift tourism, as eventgoers not only pay for tickets but also buy other products and services during their trips.
Located near Rajamangala Stadium, the 307-room Alexander Hotel typically reaches full occupancy during concert nights, welcoming both local and foreign guests.
The average room rate during events is around 2,000 baht, which is not too expensive compared with neighbouring properties, said Mr Piti.
He said fewer guests seek hotel rooms for football matches compared with concerts, especially those featuring Korean artists, which tend to attract young guests looking for accommodation.
The hotel also markets itself for events at the Mall Bangkapi, another popular indoor venue in Ramkhamhaeng, offering free transport from the hotel and attracting group meetings to the property.
The hotel has nearly reached full occupancy for the NCT Dream concert on Aug 16-17, and recorded strong forward bookings for the Blackpink World Tour in October, said Mr Piti.
The Orange Line, with stations in front of both the hotel and the stadium, is expected to increase traffic and enhance the entertainment economy in the district, he said.
Paul Kanjanapas, chief executive of Bangkok Land, said concertgoers typically spend more than average tourists, viewing overnight hotel stays as part of their tourism experience.
Bangkok Land, the developer of Muang Thong Thani, also plans to build a new stadium with more than 45,000 seats on the site currently occupied by Thunder Dome and a football field.

Phuket seeks state support to improve infrastructure
As tourism in Phuket continues to grow, the Phuket Tourist Association is urging the government to improve the island's infrastructure to enhance the quality of life for residents, accommodate rising tourist numbers and ease congestion. In the first six months of this year, the number of tourists passing through Phuket airport immigration surpassed figures from both 2019, before the pandemic, and 2024 over the same period, said Thaneth Tantipiriyakij, president of the association. Russian visitors top the tourist arrivals list, followed by Chinese and Indian travellers. Data from the Tourism and Sports Ministry showed a 34% decline in Chinese visitors nationwide, which the association said also occurred in Phuket. However, Indian tourist arrivals have grown, partly offsetting the decline. The association also noted shifts in tourist behaviour. Chinese holidaymakers are now extending their stays. Average stays have increased from 2.5 nights to nearly seven, with spending also up four times, according to Alipay data shared by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). During this low season, Phuket attracts tourists from Australia, the Middle East and nearby Asian countries. European visitors are also rising despite their peak season typically starting in November. The association expects this year's tourist arrivals to surpass those of both 2019 and 2024. However, the island's infrastructure is facing significant strain as tourism numbers remain high. This rapid growth has created new challenges. Mr Thaneth said while some areas like beach areas might not seem overcrowded, visitors may feel congestion due to existing infrastructure issues. Thep Krasattri Road (Highway 402) is the only major connection between Phuket and the mainland. Phuket airport has just one runway with a capacity of around 20 flights per hour, he said. The airport manages more than 250 flights per day during the rainy season and over 300 flights per day during the high season. Mr Thaneth said the island's waste incinerator can process around 700 tonnes per day, while daily waste generation averages 1,200 tonnes. The surplus is sent to landfills. Although a new incinerator is under construction, it will only address current waste levels, leaving no room for future growth. Water demand surges in the summer and the island lacks a fully integrated wastewater treatment system. The association is calling for urgent government support to tackle these issues. "If we could only choose one urgent improvement, it would be the roads," he said.

Oasis reunion tour set to worsen UK inflation woes
The Oasis comeback tour looks set to add to a resurgence of inflation in the United Kingdom, complicating an already tricky situation that has divided the Bank of England. The Britpop band's sell-out concerts this month could lift headline inflation by as much as four basis points if they coincide with the Office for National Statistics' data collection dates, according to economists. A jump in the consumer prices index would be unwelcome ahead of a crucial autumn for the BOE as it decides whether it can carry on cutting interest rates even as prices spike. The situation echoes Taylor Swift's UK tour last year when some commentators argued that it helped to fuel services inflation, primarily by pushing up hotel prices. However, any effect will be temporary and contained to July and August's data as the tour moves on to North America in September before returning to London long after possible data collection dates. The Oasis reunion caused a rush to see the most successful band of the 1990s Britpop era with fans paying hundreds of pounds for tickets, while songs such as Live Forever, Wonderwall and Don't Look Back in Anger re-entered the UK singles chart. The Gallagher brothers Noel and Liam — known for their feuding — last performed together in 2009. The effect from today's Edinburgh gig may be amplified by it coinciding with the Fringe festival that takes over the Scottish capital throughout the month. 'At a stretch, if prices remain where they are, this could temporarily boost UK headline inflation by about 3-4 basis points in August.' The ONS has tweaked how it collects hotel prices after recent volatility caused by surges in demand. Instead of relying on quotes on a single day, it now takes price readings at different times during the month. Barclays estimates that fans expect to spend more than £1 billion (44 billion baht) attending the Oasis tour — an average of £766 per person. However, economists believe that such events are unlikely to be a major boost for the economy as gig-goers merely offset the extra spending elsewhere.

Taylor Swift announces new album called 'The Life of a Showgirl'
Superstar Taylor Swift on Tuesday announced her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl. Swift, who has won 14 Grammys including an unprecedented four trophies for album of the year, announced the album in a podcast episode with her boyfriend and US football star Travis Kelce and his brother Jason Kelce. "This is my brand new album, 'The Life of a Showgirl'," Swift said while holding a blurred-out version of the album cover, in a clip of the New Heights podcast on Instagram. The full podcast episode is set to release at 7pm (1100 GMT). Swift's website said the official release date of the album would be announced later.
