The ecosystems of these places suffer from this littering - beaches, forests, hiking trails, name it, and you will find trash sadly scattered around, marring the beauty of the landscape and affecting the flora and fauna.
Giving travel a complete 'eco-makeover' is the need of the hour. But all hope is not lost, as it has already started, showcasing a rising consciousness for sustainability, which is prompting a shift towards responsible tourism with eco-friendly habits.
Booking.com, the online travel agency, released its 10th edition of the Travel & Sustainability Report 2025, revealing some encouraging trends among Indian travellers who are making eco-friendly choices to reduce their carbon footprint, from reducing waste to opting for greener transport.

Booking.com's Travel & Sustainability Report 2025 identified some key trends that indicate Indian travellers are embracing sustainable practices on their gateways. Here are some of the stats that demonstrate the trend, as shared by the report:

Sustainable stays are rising, becoming a popular choice among travellers who are keen to stay in eco-friendly places. These stays are rooted in local communities and focus on sustainability through energy-efficient systems like solar power, water conservation, waste recycling and more.
Booking.com's report identified 10 Indian destinations and 10 global locations that have a booming share of eco-friendly accommodations. These destinations were selected for having the highest percentage of overall properties with an independent third-party sustainability certification. Here are the destinations as per the report:

In its initial phase, Navi Mumbai Airport will handle 20 million passengers and 0.5 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo annually, with ultimate capacity expanding to 90 million passengers and 3.2 MMT cargo. The launch of Navi Mumbai airport will create a dual-airport system for the country's financial capital, enabling the decongestion of Mumbai airport and enhancing the overall passenger experience. The airport spans over 1,160 hectares (2,866 acres) of land. In March 2025, Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani visited the Navi Mumbai airport site, which is almost ready for operations. Adani Group earlier hinted that it plans to inaugurate the Navi Mumbai airport in the first half of 2025. The greenfield Navi Mumbai airport will have two parallel runways, enabling two aircraft to land and take off simultaneously. The Navi Mumbai airport features a 3,700-meter runway capable of handling large commercial aircraft. Adani Airport Holdings Limited was incorporated in 2019 as a 100 per cent subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Ltd, the flagship company of the Adani Group. But here, we are living in the era of office besties, work wives or work husbands, so the trend justifies. A rise of about 20 percent has been observed, driven by global concerts, sporting events, festivals, and from these, wellness tourism and gastronomical experiences have significantly impacted travel as luxury stays, smart planningIn this digital-first scene, social media, OTT, and AI are catalysts for travel and planning. '60% of respondents indicated that social media, OTT platforms, and movies are increasingly shaping their travel decisions,' the survey 85% plan to increase their travel frequency and 84% are ready to spend 20–50% more, both mini-vacations and long getaways are on the cards. Travellers are ready to leverage long weekends, public holidays, and mini-moons to unwind and reconnect.
