Huda Alkhamis-Kanoo talks about the Abu Dhabi Festival, international cooperation and joint exhibitions with SeMA
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates -- Barely two years after a visit to Korea by one of Abu Dhabi's key cultural figures, internationally acclaimed Korean pianist Lim Yunchan performed to a packed concert hall in Abu Dhabi, the Korean National University of Arts Orchestra performed with young Emirati musicians in Abu Dhabi, and an exhibition of contemporary Korean art co-curated by the Seoul Museum of Art and the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation opened at the prestigious Manarat Al Saadiyat cultural complex.
All this and more was set in motion by Huda Alkhamis-Kanoo, founder of ADMAF and founder and artistic director of the Abu Dhabi Festival, during her whirlwind visit to Seoul in May 2023, where she met with leading figures in Korea's cultural scene.
Her timing was prescient. The World Health Organization had declared the end of the COVID-19 pandemic earlier that month and the world was slowly coming out of long isolation, ready to engage with each other.
'We went on a journey together, we dreamed together, we shared our vision together. We are on a mission to bring our cultures together, open doors of conversation, culture to culture, conversation to conversation,' said Alkhamis-Kanoo during an interview with The Korea Herald at her residence on June 13.
'But I don't own this conversation. You don't own this conversation. We open it,' she said.
'For me, the beauty of this conversation is that it started with a vision, it became a reality. Now, we are building a legacy. The legacy is moving forward together for a greater future,' she said.
International cooperation is a key component of the Abu Dhabi Festival, and when it comes to international cooperation, the most important thing is relevance, Alkhamis-Kanoo pointed out. 'Relevance not only for us, but more importantly for our society, for our artists, our audiences and the relevance of the conversation that such international cooperation enables,' she continued.
'What is important to us is that every single international cooperation we engage in challenges, refines and expands our perspectives,' she said.
Held as part of Abu Dhabi Festival 2025, 'Layered Medium: We are in Open Circuits,' which comes to a close Monday, is an example of such international cooperation. Featuring 48 works by 29 artists, the first large-scale exhibition of Korean contemporary art in the Middle East is also the first of two co-curated and co-produced exhibitions developed through a three-year collaboration between SeMA and ADMAF.
Education is also a very important part of the Abu Dhabi Festival, especially given that the UAE is a relatively young country, formally established in 1971.
'We are a young nation but we come from a very old soul. This old soul with the energy of the young is the future. (Education) will always be a major element of the festival,' said Alkhamis-Kanoo, pointing out the educational function of the festival. She cited the example of the Korean National University of Arts Orchestra's open rehearsal, which was attended by public school children. 'Opening up to government schools is very important. Public schools all over the world are almost the underprivileged when it comes to liberal arts in all its forms, music included. We need to work more. Music creates empathy and happiness, joy. You know, that's the basis for the future,' she said.
Meanwhile, the second co-curated and co-produced exhibition, 'Intense Proximities,' will run at SeMA from Dec. 16 to Feb. 22, 2026, bringing three generations of UAE-based artists from the 1980s to today.
The partnership between SeMA and ADMAF also includes co-commissioned artworks, artist residencies, institutional exchanges and public programs in Seoul and Abu Dhabi.
'We see Korea not just as a partner but as a creative counterpart and even as something of a twin because we both have very rooted cultures and are very innovative.
'I don't think we have a finish line. We are building a process. I'd say our timeline is generational but the impact is already here,' Alkhamis-Kanoo said.

These raw, awkward and often hilarious portrayals of first love quickly helped "Better Late Than Single" to become a breakout hit. Following 12 participants, most of them in their late 20s, who had never been in a romantic relationship, the Netflix Korea show has gained global popularity since its July premiere. Just one week after its release, the series broke into Netflix's global Top 10 for non-English TV series at No. 10. In Korea, it climbed to No. 2 on the weekly domestic chart and entered the Top 10 in multiple Asian locations, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia. Producers attributed the show's broad appeal to its honest depiction of first love. 'We were all first-time daters once,' the show's producer Kim No-eun said in an interview in Samcheong-dong, Seoul. 'Because it's something everyone has experienced, it naturally creates empathy and deep emotional immersion. I think the cast's feelings came through clearly.' The production team said they were surprised to receive over 4,000 applications from people who had never dated. Most applicants were in their mid- to late-20s and had attended university during the COVID-19 pandemic. Given the show's unique premise, the vetting process for the applicants was rigorous. Before filming, the team said they verified each applicant's dating history through family, friends and acquaintances and required participants to sign a pledge grounded in mutual trust. "Of course, the participants went through a verification process, but even when we met them for interviews, just based on their appearance, we thought they probably weren't true never-daters. However, after talking with them for about 10 to 20 minutes, we became convinced that they were for real," laughed producer Won Seung-jae. One participant who made a lasting impression during the casting process was Jae-yoon, who ultimately joined the final lineup. During the interview, producer Jo Wook-hyoung recalled Jae-yoon's reflection. "To be in a relationship, he said, he has to become a man. But to become a man, he said, he first needed to become a person. Jae-yoon added that he didn't yet feel like a fully realized person and hoped to grow into one through his experience on the show," said Jo. "The moment I heard that, I knew I wanted to work with him." Reflecting on the cast's decision to take part in the show, producer Jo Wook-hyung noted, 'It takes tremendous courage to reveal one's awkward side in situations where people usually want to show only their best selves.' 'We hope viewers will warmly support the cast members who found the courage to do so.' The emotional investment paid off, resulting in two final couples. Beyond the show, news that another participant was dating an older woman brought delight to the production team. On the prospects for a second season, the team expressed optimism: 'If given the opportunity, we would gratefully make it.' At the same time, they urged fans to be considerate, warning that overwhelming attention could be harmful to the participants. Park Chan-wook's ‘No Other Choice' to open this year's Busan International Film Festival

Venice-bound black comedy to kick off Korea's top film event on Sept. 17 Park Chan-wook's latest film, "No Other Choice," will open the 30th Busan International Film Festival on Sept. 17, festival organizers announced Monday. The black comedy marks Park's return to feature filmmaking three years after "Decision to Leave." Based on Donald Westlake's 1996 novel "The Ax," the film follows a laid-off middle-aged man who begins eliminating rival job seekers in a desperate bid to secure employment and support his family. Park reportedly spent 17 years developing the screenplay, which he described as a 'long-awaited passion project' during an appearance at BIFF in 2019. The film wrapped production in January. "No Other Choice" is set to make its world premiere later this month in Venice, where it will compete for the Golden Lion. It is the first Korean title to screen in the festival's main competition since Kim Ki-duk's "Pieta" took home the top prize in 2012. Following its Korean premiere in Busan, the film is slated for domestic release via CJ ENM later in the same month. Lead actor Lee Byung-hun will host the BIFF opening ceremony ― marking the first time for a male actor to do so solo. Lee has maintained a long-standing relationship with the festival, dating back to his first appearance in 2003. BIFF director Jung Hanseok voiced high hopes for "No Other Choice" as the festival opener. 'I sincerely hope the inclusion of Park's new film will spark renewed global interest in Korean cinema,' he said in a statement. This year's festival marks a historic shift as BIFF launches its first official competition after decades as a noncompetitive event. Fourteen Asian titles will compete for five awards. Total programming expands to approximately 240 films, up from last year's 224 entries, as organizers aim to restore the event's prepandemic scale. The 30th Busan International Film Festival runs Sept. 17–26 at venues throughout Busan, with the Busan Cinema Center serving as its main hub.

Day6 to mark decade-long career with concert, album

Day6 shared its plans to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its debut via a video clip on Monday. It is planning to roll out fourth full album 'The Decade' on Sept. 5 after hosting a live show of the same title at Goyang Sports Complex in Gyeonggi Province on Aug. 30-31. The group will be the first-ever Korean guitar band to hold a standalone concert at the venue. This marks another historic step for the quartet which has been pushing the envelope for a Korean band taking over major concert venues in Korea: Inspire Arena, Gocheok Sky Dome and KSPO Dome. Its May gig at the last venue, concluding an international tour, drew 96,000 fans combined through six shows. The LP will follow a year after its ninth EP 'Band Aid' and close to six years since its previous LP 'The Book of US: Entropy.'
