Meghalaya murder case: 'Sonam didn't book return tickets', family shares shocking details; Wife made him wear expensive jewellery to honeymoon
NEW DELHI: The murder case of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi in Meghalaya hills has sent shockwaves, with more details emerging. Now, the mother of the murdered businessman, Uma Raghuvanshi, has shared more insights, saying that his son was not willing to go on honeymoon so soon.
But she (mother) told him to go if his wife, Sonam, has booked the tickets.
Uma also said that Sonam planned the trip for their honeymoon but did not book the return ticket. Talking about his wedding, she said, it was an arranged marriage, and Sonam's behaviour was good with the family, so they never had any doubt about her. Meanwhile, Raja's brother Vipul Raghuvanshi claimed that the couple had earlier made plans for visiting Kamakhya temple in Guwahati but unexpectedly changed their plan.
'Raja did not want to go on honeymoon,' says his mother
According to a report from news agency PTI, Uma Raghuvanshi told reporters, "My son went to Meghalaya with Sonam on her insistence. He did not want to go on honeymoon so soon. My son had told me that Sonam booked tickets for the trip to Meghalaya. I told him that if the ticket has been booked, then he should go to Meghalaya with his wife."
"My son also told me that although Sonam had not booked the return ticket for both of them from Meghalaya, they will return to Indore in six-seven days," she added.
No scratch on her body
On seeing the latest picture of Sonam (from Ghazipur), Uma Raghuvanshi expressed shock as there was not even a scratch mark on her body.
"I want to hear from Sonam, where, why and in what condition she left Raja," she said.
'Sonam avoided going out with Raja before marriage'
Sharing details about Raja and Sonam's wedding, Uma said that after their engagement, her daughter-in-law did not spend enough time with her son and avoided going out with him before marriage.
"When we had asked Sonam about this, she said that she has a lot of work to do in the office.
Sonam said if she is not able to call my son, then my son can also call her," she said.
"Sonam's mother had told me that her family is very strict against a man and a woman meeting before marriage and Sonam's father does not like such meetings," she added.
'Wedding happened with consent of the couple'
Uma told reporters that wedding was held in traditional way and with the consent of Raja, Sonam and both families.
"My son was very happy after the marriage. He wanted Sonam as his wife from the bottom of his heart.
We still cannot believe that she could get her husband killed. It would have been better if my son had remained unmarried, as it could have saved his life," she said.
'She should be hanged to death'
Uma said that she feels quite restless at night after losing her son, adding that if Sonam got Raja killed, then she should be hanged to death.
"I tell my son's photo that whoever did wrong to him should be punished," she said.
Family suspects Sonam and her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha's involvement
Talking to IANS, Vipin Raghuvanshi, the brother of the deceased, said, "There is news that has come out, and honestly, we are all shocked because we had never heard any news like this before.
I had never even seen it. Until now, we have been searching for Sonam, and now, Sonam has been found. Sonam's name is coming out as a conspirator."
"Raj Kushwaha, I heard the name before, as he was an employer of Sonam's company. He and Sonam both can be involved. However, we would still like to wait for a proper investigation," he added.
Raja's sister-in-law, Bhumi Raghuvanshi, added, "We were very shocked to hear Sonam's name coming up.
We cannot believe this at all, but now we want a proper investigation to be conducted regarding Sonam. If she did this, then why? The marriage happened with consent, and both were happy, but why would she do this? We demand a swift investigation."
'Plan unexpectedly changed'
Vipul further disclosed that Raja and Sonam initially planned to visit Kamakhya temple in Guwahati but unexpectedly changed the plan and headed to Shillong.
He said that Sonak had made all the bookings, and her family was unaware of the sudden change in their plan.
Raja was wearing expensive jewellery worth Rs 10 lakh
Sonam left for the airport from her paternal home wearing her wedding jewellery, according to the family.
According to an IANS report, the Indore businessman was also carrying ornaments, including a diamond ring, chain, and bracelet valued at over Rs 10 lakh, to their honeymoon.
Uma Raghuvanshi had also questioned the need to carry so much jewellery.
What happened so far?
Raja and Sonam got married on May 11 and left for Meghalaya on May 20.

"Sonam Raghuvanshi Used Burqa To Escape, Was In Indore When Raja's Body Was Found": Cop

All five accused in the Raja Raghuvanshi honeymoon killing - wife Sonam Raghuvanshi, her lover Kushwaha and three alleged hitmen Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan and Anand Kurmi - have admitted to their crime, said the police on Friday. The Meghalaya Police would take all five accused in the case to the crime spot at Sohra-Cherrapunji areas of the East Khasi Hills district next week for reconstruction of the crime, officials said. The newly-wed couple - Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi - from Madhya Pradesh's Indore went missing from a village near Sohra (Cherrapunji) in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district on May 23, two days after they landed in the northeastern state on their honeymoon. They were married on May 11. The man's body was retrieved from a 200-foot deep gorge on June 2. Wife Sonam, said police, surrendered at a police station in Uttar Pradesh in the early hours of Monday. "The murder was planned right before Raja Raghuvanshi and Sonam's wedding. Raj Kushwaha is the mastermind behind this and Sonam is his partner in crime. The three killers were Raj's friends, and one among them is his cousin," Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, Syiem Vivek, who is overseeing the investigation, told NDTV. "Since February this year, the planning was going on about how to make Sonam disappear. Two ideas were under consideration to make her disappear: first, Sonam should be shown jumping into the river; second, someone should be murdered and the body should be burnt presented as Sonam's. But the accused could not implement these plans. The plan to murder Raja was made 11 days before his marriage," said the officer. Sonam Raghuvanshi, 24, was in love with Raj Kushwaha, 21, and had warned her family of "consequences" if she was pressured to marry Raja Raghuvanshi, police sources said. As per the preliminary autopsy report, Raja Raghuvanshi, 29, was hit twice, once each on the back and front of his head. "This is not a contract killing, however, an investigation regarding the same is underway. Raj had paid the three hitmen Rs 50,000 each," said the police officer. Raja Raghuvanshi was told by his wife Sonam that she would let him consummate the marriage only after making an offering at the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, investigators had said on Wednesday. "When Sonam and Raja reached Guwahati to visit Kamakhya after marriage, the killers had already reached Guwahati on 19 May. Their initial plan was to kill Raja in Guwahati itself. But Sonam had planned to go to Shillong and Sohra. Therefore, this plan was shelved," said the officer. "After that, they reached Nongriat. Thereafter, all of them attacked Raja and killed him and hid his body. They left soon after," said the officer. After this, the officer said, Sonam wore a burqa offered by one of the hitmen and reached Guwahati in a taxi. "Then from Guwahati she took a bus and went to Siliguri, from Siliguri she went to Patna, from Patna she took a bus to Ara, from Ara she took a train to Lucknow, from Lucknow she took a bus to Indore," said the officer, detailing her movements after the murder. "After the three hitmen were arrested, Sonam was told by Raj to leave Indore and tell her family that she was kidnapped," said the officer. The day Raja's body was found, on June 2, Sonam was in Indore, said the officer. Sonam was in Indore from June 25 to 8, the officer said. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Meghalaya police is probing the sensational murder.

Mamata writes to Modi, seeks international pressure on B'desh govt for vandalism of Tagore property

Expressing her anguish over the incident, Banerjee urged Modi to 'take up the matter very strongly with the neighbouring country's government, so that no stone is left unturned to swiftly bring to justice the perpetrators of this heinous and mindless act'. What was damaged is not just a house but a 'towering fountain of creativity' in the subcontinent, she said in the letter. Kolkata, Jun 12 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister on Thursday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his intervention into the alleged vandalisation of Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral mansion in Banglaesh's Sirajganj district by a mob on June 11. According to local reports, the attack on the Nobel Laureate poet's ancestral residence was a follow-up of a June 8 dispute over the parking fee for a two-wheeler between a visitor and staff member of the Rabindra Kachharibari in Sirajganj which also doubles up as the Rabindra Memorial Museum. 'Although untold damage has already been done, a strong international protest would at least deter in future any attack on monuments of cultural legacies that have withstood steadfastly all tests of time,' Banerjee wrote in the letter, while adding: Tagore is famous not only in Bengal but also in the whole world. Reports in Bangladeshi media have stated that the Department of Archeology has temporarily suspended visitor access to the building and set up a three-member committee to probe the incident. 'Tagore frequented the place repeatedly in his lifetime, and many of his finest works were conceived or written while he was there,' Banerjee stated. 'The poet's creativity was intertwined with his association with this ancestral estate of theirs in an intimate manner. What has been vandalised is not a mere house, but a towering fountain of creativity in our subcontinent,' she continued. Local reports in Bangladesh suggested that what began as a minor dispute escalated quickly after the visitor was allegedly locked inside a room and physically assaulted, sparking anger among locals. A mob later stormed inside the museum premises and ransacked the building, especially its auditorium while also allegedly assaulting the director of the institution. 'For the people of Bengal, this attack is an onslaught on the commonly held legacy of Tagore… To strike at the ancestral traditional roots of Tagore today tantamounts to striking at the roots of immortal creations of the great poet intrinsically bonding the brothers and sisters of the world,' the chief minister wrote in her letter. Located in Shahzadpur in the Rajshahi division, the Kachharibari served as the Tagore family's revenue office and residence. Purchased by Rabindranath's grandfather Dwarakanath Tagore in 1840, the premises worked as a favourite recluse for the Nobel laureate who wrote many of his notable literary works at this site. Tagore's celebrated works from the Sirajgunj Kachharibari include plays like 'Bisarjan', poetry collection 'Sonar Tori' and several shorties of 'Golpoguchho'. The BJP has already slammed the Md Yunus government alleging that the destruction was a 'preplanned attack' by radical groups, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh.
