Investigation after fans 'jeer player' at rugby league youth game
Rugby league's governing body is investigating reports of fans heckling a young player as he attempted to take a kick during a junior match.The player for Widnes-based West Bank Bears allegedly was jeered during an under-14 youth cup semi-final against Hull side Myton Warriors.Paul Farrell, the chairman of the Bears, described the heckling as "disgraceful", but praised the player for "keeping his cool".In a statement, a spokesperson for Myton Warriors said the club would not tolerate poor behaviour. The Rugby Football League (RFL) said it shared "the club's disgust and disappointment".
A spokesperson for the RFL said: "We have prioritised touchline behaviour at all levels of the sport as it is so important to create a welcoming and inclusive environment."It is important to stress that this type of incident remains rare in the hundreds of junior and open-age fixtures that take place every weekend."A spokesperson for Myton Warriors said the club was committed to upholding the integrity of the game and ensuring that all participants conducted themselves in a manner consistent with the values of respect, discipline and sportsmanship."Where necessary, appropriate action will be taken against those whose conduct falls below these standards," they added.The club said it would not be making any further comment while investigations were ongoing.
Pitch invasion
Some spectators are reported to have entered the field of play during the match at the Bears' ground in Widnes on Sunday.Mr Farrell said it had been "a cracking game" for the most part, but added that he was disappointed with the behaviour of some supporters.He criticised those who took part in a pitch invasion after the Bears scored a try shortly before the end. "We've never had an incident like this before," he said.Mr Farrell said the club was taking disciplinary action against those identified as being involved in the "melee" on the pitch, including banning them from the clubhouse.West Bank Bears won the game 14-10 and will now play in the British Amateur Rugby League Association national youth cup final.

Oxford defender Brown signs new deal

French police used tear gas and pepper spray to disperse hundreds of migrants looking to board boats headed for Britain, while some officers were seen entering the water and dragging them back to shore. Just days ago, nearly a dozen officers equipped with anti-riot gear watched as asylum seekers boarded boats bound for Britain. When asked by broadcaster Sky News why they did not intervene, one officer said: 'It's for their safety. There are children there. We are not going to throw grenades at them.' A record number of migrants have left the northern french coastline and arrived in the UK so far this year, with figures surpassing the 15,000 mark. The UK government has vowed to crackdown on people smugglers and illegal migration, with Chancellor Rachel Reeves announcing as part of the government's spending review on Wednesday that the Border Security Command would be funded up to £280m more per year by the end of the review period in 2028-2029. The latest images from Calais come as people smugglers have been reported to be adopting a dangerous new tactic of simultaneously launching multiple small boats at once to try and dodge French police, officials warn. EU border agency Frontex said in an official updated that traffickers were adapting their methods in an attempt to boost the number of successful crossings. They are the first to make the journey to the UK so far this month after a record first five months of the year bringing the provisional total so far to 14,812 arrivals. This has also surpassed the highest total recorded for the first six months of the year, which was previously 13,489 on June 30 last year.
