Creedence Clearwater Revival Bassist Stu Cook Is Asking $10 Million for His Modernist Sarasota Home

Stu Cook, the bassist of legendary rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival, recently strummed his Sarasota, Florida, residence onto the market for $10 million—and the waterfront pad has incredible views of Roberts Bay. Cook was a member of the legendary American rock band, sometimes called CCR, from 1959 to 1972. The band, known for still-in-rotation hits like Bad Moon Rising and Fortunate Son, helped define a new era of rock, often cited for revitalizing and popularizing roots rock music and swamp rock as it pertained to the social and political zeitgeist of the '60s and '70s. It was in Sarasota where the guitarist could enjoy the fruits of his labor as a rock 'n roll legend.

The home was designed by Carl Abbott, a visionary architect who has designed some of Florida's most spectacular residences and iconic buildings. He studied under trailblazing modernist architect Paul Rudolph, an early practitioner of what's today known as the Sarasota School of Architecture, otherwise known as Sarasota Modern, a distinct version of regional mid-century modernism that was popular between the 1940s and 1960s and combined the minimalist intentions of the International Style with elements tailored to Florida's subtropical climate. This meant large expanses of glass that foster easy indoor-outdoor living and innovative (and sometimes flamboyant) roof designs. Cross-ventilation, shaded courtyards, and louver systems were frequently employed to manage sunlight, heat, and humidity.

Originally built in 2002, Cook's home was completely overhauled in 2016 with new electrical and plumbing systems, new floors and finishes, and smart house features. Located within the San Remo Estates, a waterfront community prized for its access to the open waters of Sarasota Bay, the clean-lined architectural eye-catcher sits on less than half an acre with a private dock. Spanning about 4,600 square feet, there are four bedrooms and four full bathrooms, plus a half bath split over two main levels.
Beyond the gated entry, you're met with a tranquil Zen garden set against a wall of glass. Through double glass doors, the entryway spills into the double-height great room with unobstructed water views from another towering wall of windows. Telescopic sliding glass doors open to a waterside patio. The bright and modern interiors, with stark white walls and engineered white oak flooring, are reminiscent of Sarasota Modern homes of a bygone era. There are artistic touches throughout, including a wispy paper mâché chandelier custom-designed by a German artist, and large-format artworks hang on either side of an asymmetrical travertine fireplace with an integrated flat-screen TV.
The custom details don't end there; the all-white kitchen is lined with sleek cabinetry from the renowned Italian brand Valcucine and features glass-front cabinets with folding panels that cover them for a totally clean look. There are cement-grey granite countertops, an oversized island with a cantilevered snack bar, and state-of-the-art appliances that include a built-in espresso machine, wine cooler, beverage cooling drawers, and dual wall ovens.
The second floor is accessible via a modern staircase with glass railings or an elevator. A lofted walkway leads to the sun-soaked primary wing, situated behind a sliding wall of wood; when open, the bedroom looks out onto the living space below. A lengthy waterfront terrace, an all-white bathroom with a Roman shower and freestanding tub, and dual closets round out the homeowner's retreat. There are three other en suite bedrooms, which are currently being used as a media room/office, a gym, and a guest bedroom.
The cantilevered rooftop deck is outfitted with a wet bar, ample seating space, and panoramic views, while a cascading terrace at the back of the house includes a shaded dining spot, a circular spa and a turquoise swimming pool, an outdoor shower, and a private dock with a boat lift.Click here to read the full article.
