New Bipartisan legislation protecting Pennsylvania families from lead poisoning
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — Childhood lead poisoning — it's what healthcare professionals, state representatives and other advocates say is an epidemic throughout the Commonwealth. It's also something that's believed could be prevented with more testing. 'So, my son was typical,' said Dr. Karalyn McGrorty Derstine. 'He was developmentally appropriate hitting all the milestones. And just after his first birthday, he started to regress.' After changing pediatricians and several tests, McGrorty Derstine learned her son had lead poisoning. He developed lead poisoning after being exposed to lead inside their own Montgomery County home. A similar situation for many Pennsylvania families — including State Rep. Shelby Labs of Bucks County. 'I have two young daughters. When my oldest daughter was nine months old, she was tested for lead during a routine wellness visit,' Labs shared. 'As a result of a standard pediatrician questionnaire which was, was your home built before 1978. Our home was thus prompting a lead test, which came back elevated.' Proposed bill would provide resources to help solve unsolved violent crimes in Pennsylvania According to the Lead-Free Promise Project, seventy percent of Pa residences were built before 1980. Lead can be found in paint, pipes, contaminated soil and even baby food. 'Thankfully, we were able to identify it early,' she added. 'But what about those children who don't identify early? This needs to change.' That change would happen under new bipartisan legislation. 'Legislation that will require all children in Pennsylvania to be offered lead testing by their doctor twice before the age of two,' Labs explained. 'This is a reasonable measure to save children because as we know, childhood lead poisoning is 100% preventable. And early testing is the best way to catch lead exposure before it causes irreversible harm.' As for McGrory Destine's son, he's now four and is getting better. 'Had we been educated, we would have taken the steps necessary as all parents would to make their homes that are safe,' she said. City surpasses $10 million put into Hotel Topeka
TOPEKA (KSNT) – Topeka city leaders will put $291,086 into Hotel Topeka, but not everyone on the governing body was on board with the investment. Councilmembers Christina Valdivia-Alcala, Sylvia Ortiz and David Banks voted against this resolution. The city has now invested more than $10 million into the hotel, since buying it almost two years ago for around $7.6 million. The latest investment going into the hotel is because the city has to make up operational deficits, but Banks was against it. Groundbreaking set in Emporia for $43 million internet project 'I voted no because my constituents feel that it was an unnecessary purchase and have asked that if we're going to consider the fact that we have to keep it, we do not have to make improvements, we don't have to,' Banks said. 'It's important to keep it up if we ever want to get rid of it, but constituents' requests is what I do.' Banks told 27 News that he believes the amount of money the city has put into the hotel is a lot more than it should, and that while they've had interest in the hotel, they don't have a buyer at this time. A city spokesman told 27 News back in January that the city had seven offers, but Banks said they don't have a timetable on when the hotel will be sold. For more local news, click here. Suspects in deadly Makaha shooting make first court appearance
HONOLULU (KHON2) — The suspects in the deadly Makaha shooting made their first court appearance after being charged. Styren Stevens, Matthew Moon and Olsen Burrows-Fonoimonana are charged with second degree murder, first degree attempted murder, three counts of attempted murder in the second degree and multiple firearms offenses. Four suspects in Makaha shooting have been charged According to court documents, the violence erupted around 9 p.m. on May 28 at a home on Lahaina Street in Makaha. Detectives said the suspects, including a juvenile male, arrived at the home and approached the group yelling, 'You ready to die boys?' before opening fire. The victims tried to run into the house and at some point, one of them also fired a gun. Marcus Araneta, who was at the home, was fatally shot in the chest. Four others, including Stevens himself, were hit. According to police, Araneta was pronounced dead just over an hour later. An autopsy confirmed his death as a homicide. Police believe Stevens, who was shot in the back of the leg, may have been accidentally shot by one of his own family of one of the suspects who asked not to be identified, told us outside the courtroom they understand it began as a disagreement and the groups had agreed to meet up at the house, but they don't know how it turned deadly. 'You cannot just walk around judging these kids, and you never had a conversation with these kids. You don't know these kids. I've been around these kids, and they're good kids. nothing but respect I ever got from all of them,' said the Stevens' family member. Stevens' family tells us they have received hateful messages and fears for the safety of their loved ones. 'You know how hurtful that is. He belonged to one family that loved him. He belonged to one family that could stand behind him. And we not going nowhere,' said the family member.
