The appointment came as Royal Mail's parent firm, International Distribution Services (IDS), formally left the London Stock Exchange on Monday after being taken over by Mr Kretinsky.
In April, shareholders approved the £3.6 billion takeover deal, giving the more than 500-year-old company a foreign owner for the first time.
Mr Hands said: 'I am honoured to join EP Group as strategic adviser for the UK and Germany.
'I have known Daniel Kretinsky for a long time, and I know that EP Group has a strong track record in energy and infrastructure.
'I look forward to contributing to its continued growth and commitment to energy security and sustainable energy solutions in these regions.'
Mr Kretinsky said: 'We are delighted to welcome Greg Hands to EP Group.
'His deep understanding of the UK and German business and energy landscapes, coupled with his extensive experience in government and international trade, will be invaluable as we navigate the evolving sectors in these key markets.
'Greg has unique capabilities for the job, including fluency in German and good Czech, and understands many of our markets very well.'

Liverpool make two decisions on Luis Diaz as transfer stance revealed

Liverpool forward Luis Diaz has attracted transfer interest from Saudi Arabia but the newly minted Premier League champions have no plans to sell the Colombia star Liverpool have no intention of selling Luis Diaz this summer. The Reds are yet to receive any contact from clubs looking to sign the Colombia international. Diaz, 28, has just two years left on his current contract at the club and has been subject to numerous links this summer about a move away. Saudi Pro League sides Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal have both been linked with him as well as Spanish giants Barcelona. ‌ But Liverpool are confused by the noise around the player's future as they have had no contact about his availability. ‌ He is an important player under boss Arne Slot and scored 17 goals last season in all competitions as the Reds won the Premier League title. But there are also no plans to open contract talks yet with Diaz. Diaz is set to be joined in the Liverpool attack by Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz, once a deal is agreed with the German club. Liverpool have had two bids rejected so far for the Germany star. And former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard believes the club are right to be spending big on Wirtz as the Reds should 'fix the roof while the sun is shining'. They've already confirmed the signing of versatile right-back Jeremie Frimpong in a £29m deal from Bayer Leverkusen and are also closing in on Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez, who could cost them up to £40m. Gerrard is excited and is confident that Liverpool will be the team to catch next season as they look to defend the title. ‌ The Reds legend told TNT Sport: 'Well, I think you've got to fix the roof while the sun is shining. We never had a big summer window last year, because we already had a team and a squad ready to challenge. 'But, if you want to go to the next step, it's important to keep improving, keep pushing. 'So [Jeremie] Frimpong is done and there's obviously a lot of rumours circling around, really good, talented players. So it looks like Liverpool are going to be the team to catch and I've got every confidence that they are going to get stronger next year.' On Wirtz, he added: He is a big talent, he's done fantastic for Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen. There's talk that there's going to be a really big signing, he's a big talent [with a] huge future in front of him, so Liverpool is the place for him, let's hope we can make it happen."

Reeves to stick to fiscal rules amid budget wrangles ahead of spending review

The Chancellor has been involved in wrangles with Cabinet colleagues over departmental budgets ahead of next week's spending review. She insisted her self-imposed 'fiscal rules' were 'non-negotiable' because she would not risk the economic chaos that could be caused if the markets lost faith in her ability to control spending. Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves used a speech at a bus factory in Rochdale to prepare the ground for her spending review (Peter Byrne/PA) The Chancellor said the combination of tax hikes she has already unveiled and the changes to the way borrowing for investment is accounted for meant £300 billion extra was available over the coming years. But she acknowledged this was not enough to meet the demands made by ministers. She said: 'Not every department will get everything that they want next week and I have had to say no to things that I want to do too.' But, she added: 'That's not because of my fiscal rules. It is a result of 14 years of Conservative maltreatment of our public services, our public realm and of our economy.' She said there were 'good things I've had to say no to' but 'the reason for that is because it is important to have control of the public finances'. Ms Reeves denied she would be forced into mounting another massive tax raid in order to meet her fiscal rules, which include a promise to match day-to-day spending with revenues. She said: 'We made decisions in the budget last year to increase taxes by £40 billion. 'We have absolutely no intention of repeating a budget on that scale again.' And she rejected claims that a squeeze on the Home Office budget – reportedly one of the departments holding off on agreeing a deal with the Treasury – would damage policing. Scotland Yard chief Sir Mark Rowley has warned about the impact of a squeeze on police budgets (James Manning/PA) In a letter to the Prime Minister, Sir Mark Rowley, the head of the Metropolitan Police, warned that cuts to police budgets will have 'far-reaching consequences'. Asked about warnings from Sir Mark and other policing leaders, the Chancellor said: 'We will be increasing spending on police in the spending review next week, so that's not a decision or a choice that I would recognise.' Ms Reeves was speaking in Rochdale as she confirmed plans to tear up Treasury Green Book rules to help fund billions of pounds of investment in cities across England. The £15.6 billion package for mayoral authorities included funding to extend the metros in Tyne and Wear, Greater Manchester and the West Midlands, along with a renewed tram network in South Yorkshire and a new mass transit systems in West Yorkshire. Green Book rules have been criticised in some quarters for favouring investment in London and the South East. The move means more money for areas of the North and Midlands, including the so-called red wall, where Labour MPs face an electoral challenge from Reform UK. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander, second right, and Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, right, listened to the Chancellor's speech (Peter Byrne/PA) Ms Reeves said: 'The choice is already clear: Where Reform and the Conservatives would gamble with Britain's future, Labour will invest in that future. 'Where they offer chaos, Labour offers stability. 'Where they offer decline, Labour offers investment. 'And where they offer more of the same, we offer change; change that we can now deliver because of the choices we have made.' For too long, people in the North & Midlands have been locked out of the investment they deserve. With £15.6bn of investment, we're giving local leaders the means to drive cities, towns and communities forward, investing in Britain's renewal. — Rachel Reeves (@RachelReevesMP) June 4, 2025 The investment announced on Wednesday includes £2.4 billion for the West Midlands to fund an extension of the region's metro from Birmingham city centre to the new sports quarter, and £2.1 billion to start building West Yorkshire Mass Transit by 2028. Greater Manchester will receive £2.5 billion for projects including new tram stops in Bury, Manchester and Oldham and an extension of the tram network to Stockport. A £1.5 billion investment in South Yorkshire will include £530 million to renew the region's trams, while the East Midlands will receive £2 billion to design a new mass transit system between Derby and Nottingham. In the south, the west of England will receive £800 million, including £200 million to develop mass transit links between Bristol, Bath, South Gloucestershire and north Somerset. Shadow Treasury minister Gareth Davies said the transport plans were repeats of promises made by the previous Conservative administration. He said: 'Rachel Reeves is scrambling to salvage her failing economic plan after the Prime Minister has made U-turn after U-turn, punching holes in her credibility. 'She needed to do better than copying and pasting announcements made by the previous Conservative government. The country is not falling for their lies anymore. Britain deserves better.'

Madeleine McCann: Search teams scour scrubland and abandoned buildings

Teams of German and Portuguese police officers, as well as firefighters, face the daunting task of hunting for evidence 18 years on from the disappearance of the British three-year-old in 2007. (PA Graphics) This week's operation is focusing on a sparsely developed area of land around 3.5 miles from Praia da Luz, where Madeleine was last seen while on holiday with her parents and siblings. She vanished after she was left sleeping in a room with her toddler twin brother and sister while her parents went for dinner with friends in a nearby restaurant. Kate and Gerry McCann are not commenting during the 'active police investigation', staff at the Find Madeleine Campaign said. Scrubland was cleared next to a derelict and abandoned property as part of the search operation (James Manning/PA) On Wednesday, officers were seen clearing vegetation around abandoned buildings, wearing protective gear such as hard hats and face masks, and a digger was used to move rubble. The area where they are working is an area of fields and scrubland between a main road and the sea, with a few buildings including a vineyard. Search teams use a digger during the painstaking operation (James Manning/PA) It has been variously reported that teams will look where trenches were dug near the resort at the time of Madeleine's disappearance, at wells, ruins and water tanks, and that there are plans to examine 21 pieces of land. The search is being carried out at the request of the German federal police, as they look for evidence that could implicate prime suspect Christian Brueckner, who is in prison for raping a 72-year-old woman in Praia da Luz in 2005. He is due to be released from jail in September if no further charges are brought. Tents have been put up for the officers to use during the search activity (James Manning/PA) In October last year, Brueckner was cleared by a German court of unrelated sexual offences, alleged to have taken place in Portugal between 2000 and 2017. About 30 German police, including forensic experts, are expected to take part in the search alongside Portuguese officers. The operation is expected to last until Friday. The Metropolitan Police said they were aware of the operation but that British officers will not be present. (PA Graphics) German investigators and Portuguese officers last carried out searches in 2023, near the Barragem do Arade reservoir, about 30 miles from Praia da Luz. Brueckner, who spent time in the area between 2000 and 2017, had photographs and videos of himself near the reservoir. It was previously searched in 2008, when Portuguese lawyer Marcos Aragao Correia paid for specialist divers to search it, after he claimed to have been tipped off by criminal contacts that Madeleine's body was there. British police were later given permission to examine scrubland near where she vanished in 2014.
