
Glasgow postcode gets Christmas cards now amid Royal Mail delays
Alyson McKell, chair of Townhead and Ladywell Community Council, says many residents are now choosing to travel to the G1-G5 Delivery Office on Baird Street to pick up letters so they can be sure to get them all.
She says on one occasion she picked up eight letters, despite the postie being out and delivering at that time.

Alyson explained: "[The postie] went out and delivered two, I've went and picked up eight, I went out for the day, came back and there were four more letters."
She says another resident picked up 20 letters when they went up to the delivery office despite the fact they had had some delivered.
The 58-year-old said: "Christmas cards are coming in the door to people, that's how bad it is.
"We're in April now, we're at Easter, never mind Christmas."
Alyson continued: "One person told me he got three bills from Scottish Power telling him 'you're in arrears'.
"These are elderly people and they're panicking.
"It's shocking.
"It's across the whole of Townhead, everybody's talking about it."
The Glasgow Times has previously reported residents living in the Garnethill and Woodlands areas, which are also covered by the Glasgow G1-5 Delivery Office, have been experiencing delays in receiving their mail.

Like residents living in those areas, Alyson says people living in Townhead and Ladywell have had hospital appointments, bills, bank statements and bank cards never arrive or be delivered too late, with one woman having to order a new card three times.
She says the issue has been ongoing since around July last year.
Alyson says she believes part of the issue is the fact there is currently no regular postie serving the area, with one she spoke to earlier this month telling her he was based in Dumbarton.
She said "They bring them in for one day and then not for weeks.
"When you do get mail, it's the wrong address, wrong letterbox, wrong square and then if they can't get in the main door they just slide it under and leave it in the stairwell."

After being contacted by residents about the issue, MSP Kaukab Stewart shared an online survey with community councils to gather further information for a requested meeting with Royal Mail.
The survey has received more than 50 responses so far with more than 90% saying they have experienced issues and more than 50% saying they missed hospital appointments due to a delay in receiving letters.
Stewart said: "Over the past few months constituents throughout G1-G5 have been in touch to share the issues that they have been experiencing with Royal Mail deliveries.
"After receiving a disappointing response from the Royal Mail, I have requested an urgent meeting to discuss these issues, and asked constituents to share their experience with the Royal Mail through a survey.
"This survey has shown that 91% of those responding have been experiencing issues with the Royal Mail, with 55% of those stating that they have missed hospital appointments, and 43% stating that they have missed bills.
"This is shocking, and I look forward to discussing this with the Royal Mail in person."
A Royal Mail spokesperson said: "We can confirm mail continues to be delivered across the area daily, with any items not delivered one day prioritised the next.
"While the delivery office has experienced recent resourcing issues, due to sick absence and vacancies, these have significantly reduced.
"We're continuing to recruit more posties to further strengthen our team and improve reliability for local residents."

West Lothian council has revised its term dates for the new school year in 2026-27. The changes will see Easter holiday moved forward, and will also take account of the council election in early May 2027. In a report to the Education PDSP Hannah Haywood, Customer Services Manager said: 'Easter is early in 2027.' She added: 'Proposed dates for session 2026/27 were presented to Education PDSP on 1 April. Consultation on the proposed dates was still under way at that time. 'Four responses were received, two expressing satisfaction with the proposed dates, and two requesting that the Easter Break should be later. 'Since the meeting on 1 April 2025, new information about the SQA time-scales has been provided, and it is now clear that the previously proposed timing of the Easter break would potentially negatively impact on students meeting submission deadlines for SQA awards. She added: ' Easter is early in 2027, and the original proposal was for the schools to break up on Friday 19 March, and resume on Monday 5 April, with the Easter weekend in the middle. 'A new proposal is now being presented, which moves the Easter break to make it one week later, starting on Good Friday 26 March, and resuming on Monday 12 April. 'As the Easter break is now two weeks and one day long rather than two weeks, the new proposal removes the Friday from the September weekend to make sure that we provide the required 190 teaching days in the session.' As ever the West Lothian holidays are unlikely to tie with neighbouring councils, many of which have yet to be confirmed. Chairing the PDSP Councillor Andrew McGuire said he and fellow councillors were unlikely to forget to move an in-service day to the first Thursday in May as this marks the end of their current council term. The in-service day in May 2026 has also been moved from Tuesday 5 May to Thursday 7 May to coincide with the Scottish Parliamentary Election. Term dates for 2026/27 are:- Pupils return: Wednesday 12 August September weekend: Monday 21 September October holiday: Friday 16 October-Tuesday 27 October Christmas holiday: Friday 18 December- Tuesday 5 January Mid Term: Friday 5 February - Tuesday 16 February Easter Holidays: Thursday 26 March - Monday 5 April May Day holiday Monday 3 May Staff in-service Thursday 6 May. The new term dates will have to be confirmed by the Education Executive when it meets in two weeks' time.

New Shotts Boys' Brigade company host first annual display
Rev Phil Geary, Captain, welcomed the company members and parents to the EU Congregational Hall including guest of honour Mrs Gillian Agnew from 1st Shotts Girls Brigade, and MP Kenneth Stevenson. A new Boys Brigade Company has been established in Shotts and the members of 3rd Shotts took part in their first annual display and presentation of awards. Rev Phil Geary, Captain, welcomed the company members and parents to the EU Congregational Hall including guest of honour Mrs Gillian Agnew from 1st Shotts Girls Brigade, and MP Kenneth Stevenson. Rev Phil said: 'It's seeming a little surreal that two years ago, the idea if a BB hadn't even been dreamt up, yet here we are at the end of the first year. 'The boys have worked hard in everything we have thrown at them, not least this display which has meant al of the boys are stepping out of their comfort zone in one way, shape or form, so please encourage them along the way.' Rev Phil also thanked his officers Andy Allan, Sean Chalmers, Naomi Geary, Yvette Geary, Martin Phillips, Edith Ross, and Jim Williams, with Helpers Morag Forsyth and Janice Whitefield, for all their efforts for the company and their work with the young people, He also expressed thanks to David Sneddon who was part of team who trained the officers of the new BB Company which adopted the 3rd Shotts title, which was formerly used 30 years ago. Throughout this first year the boys took part in the annual Remembrance Service at the War Memorial and in the church; along with the Sunday School, they were involved in making shoeboxes for boys and girls in parts of the world who wouldn't have ordinarily receive a gift at Christmas. The boys also enjoyed a number of outings, including a trip to the bowling alley with members of 1st Shotts GB. A highlight of the year was a trip to Northern Ireland which was a great success. Regular meetings include scripture lesson, games, crafts and activities, all of which counts towards boys gaining their badges at the end of term. The boys have learned the discipline of arranging themselves in squads, the importance of teamwork and supporting those who need a little extra help; and being aware of their surroundings and the need to enjoy and respect the world around them. The evening also included the opening prayer by Martin Phillips, Scripture Readings by Jim Williams and Janie Whitefield, and closing prayer by Edith Ross. Everyone joined in the final hymn which is associated with Boys Brigade 'Will Your Anchor Hold'. Rev Phil completed the evening by saying: 'As you will see and hear, we are unashamedly a Christian organisation and we seek to present the Gospel to the boys each week and also to instil in them good Christian morals that will no doubt be of help as they grow into young men.'

Scots warned of bin collection chaos this week - check if you will be impacted
The local authority has apologised for the changes to the bin schedule and has issued advice for residents Scots are being warned about disruption to their bin collections, with thousands facing changes to when they can expect their rubbish to be lifted. This is after a refuse worker was apparently hurt after getting caught in the lorry's lifting mechanism, as per the BBC. The lifting mechanisms on all Scottish Borders Council bin lorries have now been suspended over safety concerns. No household food waste will be collected as a result of the incident. Instead, locals have been asked to put food waste in their general bin. Domestic food waste collections have been suspended between June 9 and June 13. The local authority told the BBC they are unsure of when normal service will resume. The news affects residents in the Scottish Borders who reportedly face a second week of upset. "We are not sure how long this disruption will continue," a council spokesperson told the broadcaster. "If you do not have enough space in your food waste bin, we ask that you place any food waste into your general waste bin until further notice. We are very sorry for this inconvenience. "If your general waste or recycling bin is not collected as scheduled, please leave it presented as we will make every effort to return for it." They added that if services haven't returned by Sunday, households should take their bins back and then present them outside again on the next scheduled collection day. They highlighted that "remaining restraints" will be removed by staff where possible but in the case this can not occur, they "will not be able to collect the bin". The spokesperson added that they can not guarantee that all restraints removed by staff will be returned and ask for "continued patience and cooperation" until the matter is resolved. The council's website states that collections may change due to public holidays at Christmas and New Year. Otherwise, with the exception of this latest incident, there should be no changes to collections on other public holidays throughout the year. Elsewhere, North Lanarkshire councillors have spoken out against the local authority's impending charges for brown bin collections. From June 1, North Lanarkshire Council has started charging £40 a year for the service. However, council tenants who need a permit will benefit from having their permit costs incorporated into their rental costs, which means their permit charge is spread over the year. Meanwhile, private renters, housing association tenants and home owners will be forced to pay the full permit fee up front. Progressive Change North Lanarkshire's housing spokesperson, Gerry Brennan branded the move "ill-conceived and completely unfair on those council tax payers who do not rent their homes from North Lanarkshire Council."
