Ford announces $30,000 EV pickup truck built in America
It will be built in Kentucky, where Ford also assembles internal-combustion pickup trucks (F-Series Super Duty), and push the boundaries of affordability in the EV space while, apparently, taking the form factor of America's favorite vehicle: A pickup truck.

Well, the new vehicle will be a truck at first. According to Jim Farley, it will later adopt various other body styles, including multiple SUVs and maybe even a sedan (seemingly previewed by animations on large monitors behind the stage from which he delivered this news). Farley went on to lay out several other superlatives about the new vehicle, including that it will have impressive range; be capable of powering one's home in the event of a power outage for up to six days; and be "[Toyota] RAV4-sized," at least in terms of passenger space.
The truck will have both a useable bed in back and a frunk in its nose, and it will be "faster than the Mustang twin-turbo," a curious claim given there is no factory twin-turbo Mustang on sale today. Perhaps he was referring to the entry-level Ford Mustang EcoBoost, a single-turbo four-cylinder powered coupe or convertible that's quick but hardly Tesla quick.

All of this is centered around Ford's Universal EV platform, a new architecture that aims to leverage cost savings, engineering cleverness, and manufacturing changes to streamline development and more to reduce parts count, complexity, and weight. There will be "unicasting," or larger and simpler casting techniques, fewer fasteners, 4,000 fewer feet of wiring, and a battery claimed to deliver equivalent range to today's expectations with a third less size (so, 33 percent less capacity). About that battery: It's definitely a newer, lower-cost LFP-style unit, and apparently will be structural, serving as the floor of the vehicle.
Ford chief EV, digital and design officer Doug Field even noted that the way the car will be assembled is different, promising that no worker will ever need to contort an entire dashboard or other large interior or powertrain component into a body structure through a door opening again — suggesting that Ford is really looking at changing not only the design, parts sourcing, prototyping, and other elements of the vehicle but also upending the way cars have been built for the better part of the last century. Ford calls it an "assembly tree" as opposed to the traditional assembly line, where multiple sections of the vehicle are assembled in parallel before being joined near the end of the process.
So far, Ford hasn't shown what the new-age Model T will look like beyond some simple line drawings of the truck's profile, as well as profiles of what appear to be a small SUV, large three-row SUV, and a van. Most likely, the first truck won't roll off Louisville's plant floor until 2027 at the earliest, but we'll keep you posted.

Ryan Preece earns 2nd career pole position in hunt for NASCAR playoff spot at Richmond
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Ryan Preece will start from the pole position Saturday night at Richmond Raceway while trying to lock in a spot for the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. Preece earned his second career pole in 212 Cup starts with a lap at 121.381 mph around the 0.75-mile oval in his No. 60 Ford. 'What a great car,' said Preece, whose previous pole came at Martinsville Speedway in April 2023. With two races remaining in the regular season, Preece still can make the playoffs through the points standings, but a win would secure an automatic berth. Tyler Reddick, who can lock into the 16-driver playoff field on points with a strong result Saturday, qualified second. AJ Allmendinger will start third despite his No. 16 Chevrolet failing prerace inspection twice, which resulted in a loss of pit stall selection and the ejection of car chief Jaron Antley. Denny Hamlin and Chase Elliott rounded out the top five in qualifying. Sweeping the top three starting spots, Preece, Reddick and Allmendinger were joined by six other winless drivers qualifying in the top 15: Brad Keselowski (sixth), Alex Bowman (ninth), Michael McDowell (10th), Austin Dillon (11th), Chris Buescher (12th) and Carson Hocevar (15th). It'll be a tougher slog to get to the front for Ty Gibbs (22nd) and Kyle Busch (28th). Three-time Cup champion Joey Logano, a two-time winner at Richmond, will start last in the 38-car field after being unable to turn a lap in qualifying. Logano hit the Turn 4 wall in practice because of a right-front tire problem on his No. 22 Ford. Starting position is critical at Richmond, which tends to have long green-flag stretches when it's easy to fall a lap down. Last August's race had only three caution flags, which is tied for the fewest on a short track since the 2022 debut of the Next Gen car. ___

Did the Lexus EV Sports Car Die So the 'LFR' Could Live?
To the eagle-eyed, the new Lexus Sports Concept might look familiar. And I don't mean to those who've pored over the many spy photos and renderings of both the upcoming road and racing versions. This new car—which we and others have been calling the LFR—owes a lot to the LC and LFA, sure, but also the Electrified Sports concept from 2021. But this new car will have gas power. So what happened to the EV? The Lexus Electrified Sport debuted in December 2021, when Toyota unveiled a number of EV concepts . Its long-hood, short-deck proportions scream front-engine rear-drive sports car, but Lexus said that this was a pure EV, with solid-state batteries promising a 435-mile range and a sub-2-second 0-60 mph sprint. Since 2021, however, popular sentiment around electric cars has shifted. Their growth has slowed, and many automakers— Toyota included —have scaled back their EV ambitions. Photo by: Lexus Photo by: Brian Silvestro / Motor1 Back then, Lexus did say it would build an EV sports car. Akio Toyoda himself said, "Lexus will develop a next-generation battery EV sports car that inherits the driving taste, or the secret sauce, of the performance cultivated via the development of the LFA.' As of now, the company hasn't said whether it's cancelled this project entirely. But there's no doubt that the new Sports Concept uses many of the same design cues as the 2021 EV. The overall proportions are the same, but Lexus carried specific details forward, too: The largely open front intake with a split in the center; the LFA aping C-pillar and cutaways in the rear bodywork; the full-width light bar at the back; the cutaways in the hood; the double-bubble roof; and more. The two cars are not identical, but they are very much cut from the same cloth. 27 Source: Brian Silvestro / Motor1 We know that this new Lexus concept previews a production car that will have a Toyota twin. In 2022, Toyota debuted the GR GT3 concept , a low-slung, front-engine, rear-drive race-car design that very much has an engine up front (likely, a twin-turbo V-8). An official confirmed a road-going Lexus version of the car in 2022 , with the Lexus version expected for the US, and the Toyota version hitting other markets. A Lexus spokesperson declined to comment on what, if any, relationship the two concepts have. If you'll allow us a bit of speculation, it's not hard to imagine Toyota cancelling a Lexus EV sports car, since there doesn't seem to be a market for such a thing. But with the Electrified Sports concept, Lexus at least had a good design basis for the internal-combustion sports car that will eventually come. Plus, there's a possibility the production road car could be a hybrid of some sort to compete with new, electrified offerings from AMG, Porsche, and Corvette. But for now, at least, it appears an all-electric Lexus sports car will have to wait. More on the 'LFR' The Lexus LFR Isn't an LFA Successor.
