Priyank Kharge was allegedly denied clearance to travel to the US, accusing the Centre of denying nod without official explanation.
Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge, son of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, said he has received the clearance from the central government to travel to the United States, days after he said he was denied the necessary the required clearances.
Kharge was slated to lead the state's delegations at the prestigious BIO International Convention in Boston and the Design Automation Conference (DAC) in San Francisco. However, sources close to the developments indicate that while other members of the delegation, including senior officers, received their clearances, Kharge's approval from the ministry of external affairs (MEA) did not come through.
In a post on X, Priyank Kharge said, 'So in a U-turn, the Ministry of External Affairs has now decided to revoke its earlier decision and grant me a clearance for an official visit to the United States."
The Karnataka minister said he had sought permission on May 15 to travel between June 14-27 to represent the state government at two major global forums and over 25 official meetings with top companies, universities and institutions for collaborations and pitch for investments.

'My application was denied without any official explanation. On 19 June, I addressed a press conference, laying out the full chronology, questioning the basis of the denial and raising concerns about possible political interference. The matter was widely reported in the media," he added.
However, the MEA revoked its earlier denial and issued a 'No Objection" clearance dated on June 19, which was 36 days after his original application and five days after his scheduled departure. 'The timing raises serious questions: Why was the clearance denied in the first place? Was the previous order revoked to avoid accountability after the matter became public?" he asked.
He also wrote a two-page letter to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, seeking clarity on why his clearance was revoked. 'Denying a Cabinet Minister and the custodian of one of the world's largest technology clusters, the ability to carry out such official responsibilities without explanation, raises serious concerns. It is not only against the interests of the state but also undermines the spirit of cooperative federalism," he said.

Cleared for US visit, Karnataka minister Priyank Kharge now questions MEA's ‘U-Turn' for rejecting his request earlier

Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge on Friday questioned the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) over their decision to grant him permission to visit the US, when an application for the same was rejected earlier. In a detailed post on X, Kharge said that the ministry had taken a 'U-Turn' and sought explanation for the same. The Karnataka Minister highlighted that he sought permission for his US travel to represent the Karnataka government between June 14 and 27 on May 15 at two major global forums and hold 25 official meetings with top companies, universities and institutions for collaborations and pitch for investments. He explained that the application for the minister and his delegation was submitted on May 15, which was later rejected on June 4. Kharge added that an application for the officer delegation without the minister was submitted on June 6 and it got clearance on June 11. The minister said that his application was rejected without any reason or any official explanation. He also said that the application of the KEONICS Chairman, which was submitted on May 12, was cleared on May 14. The Karnataka Minister said that he addressed a press conference on the matter on June 19, explaining the chronology and raising concerns about the possible political interference. Following the MEA's decision to grant clearance to Kharge for travelling to the US, he asked why his application was rejected in the first instance. Kharge queried whether MEA revoked its previous order to any kind of accountability after the matter became "public". He also said that the MEA issued a 'No Objection' certificate dated June 19. '36 days after my original application, 15 days after the official denial and 5 days after my scheduled departure, they 'revoke' their previous decision,' Kharge wrote in his post on X. 'The timing raises serious questions: Why was the clearance denied in the first place? Was the previous order revoked to avoid accountability after the matter became public? What is the point of granting clearance after the key events are either over or nearing completion? Will the MEA now avoid explaining the original decision by pointing to the belated approval?' Kharge asked on X. Criticising the central government, Kharge said that while they coin visions like 'Make In India', 'Digital India' and 'India AI Mission', ministers like him are blocked by the government from doing 'the work'. 'While the Centre gives us slogans like 'Make in India,' 'Digital India', 'National Quantum Mission' and 'India AI Mission,' the real work to realise these aspirations is happening here in Karnataka. They coin the vision, but when we do the work to bring investments, create jobs and position India as a global leader - they block us,' Kharge wrote. 'The Prime Minister once said: MAGA + MIGA = MEGA. But what does that even mean in practice, when the very state driving India's tech and innovation engine is denied the support it needs to lead globally? These questions warrant an urgent response. Karnataka deserves answers,' the minister added.

Ensure continuity of studies for Iran-evacuated students: Samajwadi MP Awadhesh Prasad to Centre

Ayodhya (Uttar Pradesh) [India], June 21 (ANI): Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad on Saturday urged the Centre to ensure the continuation of studies for students evacuated from war-torn Iran. 'Citizens of our nation -- most of whom are students -- are returning to the country today, and we welcome them. We demand that the government make all possible and vigilant efforts for their continued studies, resettlement, and safety,' Prasad told ANI. Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that so far, 517 Indian nationals have returned to India from Iran under Operation Sindhu. Jaiswal stated that a special flight from Turkmenistan's Ashgabat arrived in New Delhi on June 21. The Indian government has launched Operation Sindhu to evacuate Indian nationals from Iran, given the deteriorating situation as a result of the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel. In a post on X, Jaiswal stated, 'Operation Sindhu continues. A special evacuation flight from Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, landed in New Delhi at 0300 hrs on 21st June, bringing Indians from Iran home. With this, so far 517 Indian nationals from Iran have returned home under Operation Sindhu.' The Indian Embassy in Tehran coordinated the safe movement of students, while the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) ensured their safe return. An Indian national who was evacuated from Iran, Zaffar Abbas Naqvi, recounted how he and his family stayed indoors initially after hearing about the attack on Iran. They later moved to Mashhad, which also came under attack, prompting them to contact the Indian government. Naqvi praised the swift action taken by the government and thanked Prime Minister Modi and UP CM Yogi Adityanath for their support. 'Everything was going fine, but one day we heard that Iran had been attacked. We stayed indoors for some time. We then moved to Mashhad. soon. Mashhad then came under attack. We then contacted the Indian government. The action was so swift that we cannot express our gratitude in words. I want to thank Modi ji and Yogi ji who made all the arrangements for us...,' said Naqvi. The first batch of 110 Indian students, including 90 from Kashmir, was safely evacuated from northern Iran and transported to Armenia before being flown to New Delhi. These students were primarily from Urmia Medical University. The conflict between Israel and Iran entered its ninth day on Saturday. The conflict started after Israel, on June 13, launched a massive airstrike on Iranian military and nuclear sites, dubbed 'Operation Rising Lion'. In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched a large-scale drone and missile operation, 'Operation True Promise 3', targeting Israeli fighter jet fuel production facilities and energy supply centres. Tehran [Iran], June 21 (ANI): The Indian Embassy in Iran has said that the embassy will make efforts to evacuate citizens of Nepal and Sri Lanka. The embassy noted that the efforts will be made at the request of the Governments of Nepal and Sri Lanka. 'On request of the Governments of Nepal and Sri Lanka, the Indian Embassy's evacuation efforts in Iran will also cover Citizens of Nepal and Sri Lanka,' the Indian Embassy in Iran posted on X. It is pertinent to note here that it is not the first time that the Indian government has launched an operation to evacuate citizens from another country. Earlier in 2023, India launched Operation Kaveri to evacuate its citizens during violent military clashes in Sudan. India had launched Operation Ajay to evacuate Indian nationals from Israel during the Israel-Hamas conflict in 2023. Operation Ganga was launched by the Indian government in 2022 to evacuate Indian nationals when war erupted between Russia and Ukraine. Earlier in 2021, Indian government launched Operation Devi Shakti to evacuate Indian citizens from Afghanistan after Taliban takeover. India launched Operation Samudra Seta to evacuate Indians through sea during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. India launched Operation Raahat to evacuate citizens after civil conflict erupted in Yemen in 2015. Earlier in 2011, India launched Operation Safe Homecoming to evacuate Indian nationals during civil war in Arab Spring in Libya. (ANI)
