'Let's make a new Groundhog Day...' Jon Watts calls for Hollywood to stop "ripping" off original films

'Let's make a new Groundhog Day...' Jon Watts calls for Hollywood to stop "ripping" off original films

Jon Watts calls for Hollywood filmmakers to create new movies instead of 'ripping' off successful films.
The 44-year-old director admitted he is frustrated at a lack of creativity and original ideas in Hollywood and believes "medium scale" films should stop looking at the stories which have been successful in the past and presenting them in a different way.
Asked what he would change about how Hollywood makes movies and TV shows, Watts told Collider.com: "I wish there were more original movies in theatres. Original movies in, like, a medium scale.
"We've built this system where you have these giant tentpole movies that are so expensive that people feel like they have to be based on something that you already recognise. They can't be too risky.
"I think that's created a hole in the middle of interesting, new movies. Like, we're still ripping off Groundhog Day. Let's make a new Groundhog Day.
"Let's make new medium-sized ideas that get everyone excited about going to the movies again."
Even though the Spider-Man: No Way Home director agrees that film studios have to rely on previous successes to "make enough money", he thinks there is always space for fresh ideas.
He said "You do have the big things that you rely on to make sure that you make enough money, but at some point, you're going to run out of things to remake, and then you're just regurgitating the same stuff over and over again."
Watts is also concerned that films have to "do great immediately" on release instead of being able to slowly build box office success.
Asked about Pixar's Elio, which was branded a flop after taking just under $21 million at the US box office in its opening weekend, he said: "I haven't seen it. It looks really good. Maybe it will just take some time.
"That's the other thing that I think is stressful in Hollywood right now is things have to do great immediately. They're not given the space to live in theatres and grow and build an audience over time. Used to, movies would start lower and then slowly accumulate over time.
"Now, if it isn't a huge hit immediately, people will start talking about how it's a huge flop, and that's not necessarily true."
With more people beginning to use artificial intelligence (AI) to assist in creative work, it is not something Watts will do because he loves working with "human beings".
Asked if he has concerns about the growth of AI over the next 10 years, Watts said: "I don't want to wade into it too deeply, but I think the first thing that people should think about when it comes to AI is that they should stop calling everything AI.
"There are so many facets to this conversation. It feels like back when people would talk about 'the internet,' and they were like, 'How is the internet going to change everything? How is the World Wide Web going to affect politics?'
"AI is a very complex thing that can be used in very different ways. I think the first thing everyone should do is be a lot more educated when they talk about it, so it doesn't get oversimplified.
"Personally, I don't mess around with it. I like the human beings that I work with, and I'm not interested in replacing any of them. I look forward to working with human beings. So, right now, I'm personally learning about it, but I'm staying away from using it."

Best TV shows the whole family can watch together these school holidays

It's the second week of the school holidays and your kids are climbing the walls. Don't despair — there's plenty on the small screen to keep the children entertained and your brain intact. Here are a few of our tried and tested TV favourites to watch with the whole family. Modern Family has become something of a modern classic in recent years. Though it began in 2009, all these years later the plots remain current, the characters still relatable, and it more than stands the test of time. It's a delight to watch the extended Pritchett family grow through 11 fabulous seasons — well worth a rewatch. You may not have heard of this delightful animation, all about a relentlessly optimistic chicken named Archibald and his family, but it should certainly be on your radar. Based on a book written by Arrested Development's Tony Hale, it stars the comedian as the central character and has a delightfully offbeat premise. A hidden gem! Not yet discovered these great Spider-Man spin-offs? Rectify this immediately! This film came out in 2023 as a sequel to 2018's incredibly popular — and incredibly clever — Into The Spider-Verse. Dare we say it: it might even be better. The animation is terrific, but the best part is the story: it's engaging from the get-go, for tweens, teens and adults alike. Good news: there's another film in the works. Wicked hit streaming just in time for the holidays — hooray! If you are one of those who missed it the first time around in the cinemas (guilty!), it's well worth a watch on the small screen. Before you dive in, head on over to Max, Binge or Apple TV Plus to watch the original film. It's amazing that at 85 years old, it still holds up. The perfect double-header. It's hard to underestimate just how popular this original animated film is with young audiences — it's rocketed up the streaming charts, and is one of the world's most popular flicks for kids right now. It's so popular, in fact, that songs from the film's fictional band are racing up the US pop charts. They recently surpassed Blackpink as the highest-charting female K-pop group! If you've not yet checked out this latest season, now's the perfect time. We're getting to the pointy end of the competition and things are getting serious. This week sees the first group of dancers return to the floor for another chance to impress the judges. With Rebecca Gibney now out of the comp, the trophy is anyone's to win! Great fun for the whole family. We couldn't have this list and not include Bluey — it's far and away the best thing on TV for kids. And let's face it, it's an absolute joy to watch as an adult as well. The best bit? You can 'set and forget' with this one, knowing your kids are well looked after by everyone's favourite Heeler family while you get those household jobs done. Got small people in your lives? Chances are they own at least one of Andy Lee's children's books. This series has been reimagined for television, and it sees everyone's favourite blue monster Wizz getting up to all sorts of adventures with his mates: a lime, a kiwi, a tortoise and a scientist. Goofy good fun. Take a trip to Vegesaur Valley to hang with 'the juiciest and freshest creatures ever to rule the planet'. This locally produced series about a group of fruit and vegetable dinos is super popular here and in the UK, where it racked up 48 million views on BBC iPlayer, leading the British broadcaster to come onboard as a producing partner for subsequent seasons. Silly and sweet — your new favourite. This one's for all of us who grew up watching Charlie, Snoopy and the gang as kids. The classic cartoons are available to watch on Apple TV Plus, and it's heaps of fun to watch them again with your kids (who will probably be more than a little bemused by the decidedly lo-fi animation and simple plots). A new special, Snoopy Presents: A Summer Musical, will hit screens on July 18.

Tom Holland reveals how Spider-Man: Brand New Day will improve on No Way Home

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be better than Spider-Man: No Way Home because it will 'shoot in real locations' instead of on production sets, Tom Holland has said. The 29-year-old actor is due to suit up as the Wall-Crawler once again for the upcoming Marvel superhero blockbuster, and has now stressed Spider-Man: Brand New Day will improve on its 2021 predecessor by dropping the sound stages in favour of filming on location - with principal photography set to start in Glasgow next month. Speaking with Flip Your Wig, Holland said: 'I'm obviously over the moon and so excited. Playing Spider-Man is like hanging out with an old pal, and I think we were really restricted with what we could do in the last movie because of COVID. We shot the entire film on stages. 'Now, we're really gonna lean into that old-school filmmaking and shoot in real locations, which is why we're starting in Glasgow.' The Odyssey star added the streets of the Scottish city would be used for a 'massive set piece' in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Reflecting on Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Holland teased the film would feel like a 'breath of fresh air', like his original 2017 movie Spider-Man: Homecoming. He said: 'It's gonna feel like making [Spider-Man: Homecoming] again. It's been such a long time that I've done it that it's gonna feel like a breath of fresh air. 'And I think the fans are gonna be over the moon with what we're putting together.' As well as Holland's Webhead, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will see the return of Zendaya as Michelle 'MJ' Jones-Watson, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds and Jon Bernthal as The Punisher. Spider-Man: Brand New Day will also introduce Stranger Things actress Sadie Sink and The Bear's Liza Colón-Zayas, though it has not been confirmed what roles they will be playing in the movie. While little is known about the plot of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it has been rumoured Mark Ruffalo's Hulk may be the main antagonist of the film, but this has not been confirmed. Spider-Man: Brand New Day - which will be helmed by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton - is set to land in cinemas on July 31, 2026. When Holland and Cretton revealed the title for Spider-Man: Brand New Day at CinemaCon in March, the Uncharted star teased the movie would be a 'fresh start' for the Wall-Crawler. Appearing on screen at the event, Holland said: 'I know we left you with a massive cliffhanger at the end of No Way Home, where Peter Parker sacrificed his identity to save the people that he loves most in the world. 'So, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a fresh start. It is exactly that. That's all I can say. That's all I've been allowed to say, and I'm well over the hump of giving away spoilers. So don't you worry: I'm not gonna do that today.'
