Entire family of five killed in horror crash while traveling on Mother's Day

Daily Mail15-05-2025

A family of five from Texas were tragically killed in a horrific car accident while traveling together for Mother's Day.
Hermenegildo Melendez, 55, his wife Veronica Cerda, 53, and their three daughters - Denise Cerda, 26, Rebecca Cerda, 20, and Daniela Cerda, 18 - were traveling together in their 2023 Ford F-150 on Interstate 45 in Houston on Saturday, celebrating the holiday weekend as a family.
However, their lives were tragically cut short when their truck collided head-on with a 2016 Dodge pickup, resulting in the deaths of all five family members and leaving the other driver in critical condition, according to a fire department press release.
'It just, it rips my heart out because I know they deserve better,' Jillian De Haro, a family friend of the oldest daughter, told Click 2 Houston.
'This wasn't supposed to happen to them,' she added. 'They were a really close-knit family.'
On Saturday afternoon, the Cerda family left their home in Greenspoint, climbed into their family pickup truck and set out on the road to Dallas.
Shortly after 3pm, near the 157-mile marker on I-45, a Dodge pickup traveling southbound veered off the roadway and struck a guardrail on the right side of the freeway.
The truck, driven by 42-year-old Toriano Fair of Dallas, then crossed the roadway into the center median, broke through the cable barrier and collided head-on with the Cerda family's vehicle as they traveled northbound.
Both vehicles were engulfed in flames upon impact. Bystanders, noticing the smoke and realizing something was wrong, rushed to help while waiting for emergency crews to arrive.
Mujtaba Quadri, a Houston man driving home with his wife, was among those who spotted thick smoke while traveling northbound, prompting them to pull over.
'There were at least seven people there, everybody actively just doing something, somebody was dictating what we should do,' Mujtaba Quadri, who stopped to help alongside his wife, told KHOU 11 News.
As everyone at the scene frantically called for water, Quadri grabbed a bottle in an attempt to extinguish the flames, but tragically, it wasn't enough.
However, despite the overwhelming circumstances, the good Samaritans managed to pull the 42-year-old driver from his Dodge truck, helping him escape the blaze.
'The fire was raging, I wish I was able to see the other people because I was on the driver's side, I only saw that one person,' Quadri told KHOU.
The other driver was placed on a stretcher made of blankets and rushed to the hospital in critical condition, suffering from severe, unspecified injuries, Click 2 Houston reported.
Devastatingly, the five members of the Houston family were declared dead at the scene by the Justice of the Peace, as confirmed by the fire department.
'Just imagine how we are feeling, like we couldn't save them and imagine what he's going to have to go through knowing what happened, and it's devastating,' Quadri told the outlet, referring to the bystanders and the driver of the Dodge.
'If I was in their situation, it would give me solace at least, to know that there were random strangers out there helping my family.'
De Haro, a family friend of the oldest daughter, received a call from an unknown number on Saturday but chose not to answer. It wasn't until State Troopers arrived at her home that she realized it was them trying to reach her.
'I kind of just froze,' De Haro told Click 2 Houston, recalling the moment she was given the heartbreaking news.
'All I remember saying, as soon as I hung up, my mom was like, "What's wrong?" Cause I started crying,' she explained. 'I just remember saying, "Vero, Vero and her whole family passed away."'
'She's one of those best friends that your mom always wants you to have in your life,' she added. 'I say the friendship of a lifetime.'
Firefighters from the Centerville and Leona Volunteer Fire Departments worked together to put out the blaze and recover the victims from the scene, according to the department.
CHI St. Joseph Health EMS Medic 71, EMS 4, Air Med 12 North, Texas Highway Patrol, Leon County Sheriff's Office and Boren To Tow and Drake's wrecker services also assisted at the scene.
On Monday, a family member launched a GoFundMe page to raise money for the Cerda family's funeral and memorial expenses, aiming to 'give this beautiful family the farewell they deserve'.
'They were a close-knit and loving family, known for their warmth, kindness and deep love for one another,' the fundraiser read.
'Their sudden passing has left a deep void in the hearts of everyone who knew them, and their absence will be felt forever.'
As of Thursday morning, the family had raised nearly $70,800 of their $90,000 goal.
'In times of tragedy, even the smallest acts of kindness can bring light into darkness,' the description read.
'If you're able, we humbly ask for your support - through donations, sharing this page, or simply holding this family in your thoughts and prayers,' it added.
'From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for standing with us during this time of unimaginable grief.'
Investigators have not yet released details about what may have caused the crash, as the Texas Department of Public Safety's investigation remains ongoing.

Police still probing crash that saw car plunge off 300ft cliff - killing two: Witnesses tell of watching 'man be pulled from wreckage'

Police are continuing to investigate the deaths of two people after a car plunged 300ft from a cliff at a well-known coastal landmark. A car left the road and went crashing into the water at Alum Bay on the Isle of Wight on Friday evening, as holidaymakers looked on in horror. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police confirmed on Saturday evening that two people have died, The Isle of Wight County Press reported. Police have been carrying out enquiries and were seen at an address in Cowes later on in the evening. It has not been confirmed what the scope of their investigation is. Coastguard, police, firefighters and ambulance crews all rushed to the scene, with a man later being 'recovered' from the water. Witnesses watched on as a naked male was pulled from the wreckage and onto the shore. Response teams were then seen commencing CPR on one of the casualties. Photos of the aftermath show the wreckage of the car submerged in the water. With the roof and bonnet crumpled, while coastguard search around it. In a statement released on Friday evening, the police said: 'We're currently at the scene of a serious incident in Totland. 'We were called at 7.21pm this evening after a car, which was being driven along Alum Bay New Road, left the road, came off the cliff top and came to rest in the water below.' Emergency services rushed to the scene and a winchman was lowered from the coastguard helicopter down to the bottom of the cliff. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance landed at Yarmouth where two ambulances, a critical care paramedic and Police had relocated awaiting the arrival of a casualty. Two coastguard teams responded and were stood down in the early hours of Saturday morning. The cliff sits near the world-famous Isle of Wight Needles, which is a row of three stacks of chalk that rise about 30 metres above the water. Near the landmark is a small theme park with a viewing point and chairlift down to the beach, with views of The Needles. The attraction brings in thousands of visitors every year and is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the island. The Needles Landmark Attraction was closed by police yesterday while emergency teams attended the incident. Access to the beach, an observation tower and the Needles Old Battery fort were also restricted. Despite the incident, a one-day yacht race around the Isle of Wight, named The Round the Island Race, still went ahead yesterday. Yachts passed Alum Bay, where the car fell. The annual event is organised by the Island Sailing Club. The race attracts more than 1,200 boats and around 10,000 sailors a year. It is one of the largest yacht races in the world.

US troops make first detentions in Trump border military zones

June 8 (Reuters) - U.S. troops have made their first detentions inside military areas set up on the U.S.-Mexico border as part of the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigration, the U.S. Army said. The unprecedented military areas along 260 miles (418 km) of border in New Mexico and Texas were declared extensions of U.S. Army bases by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, allowing troops to temporarily detain migrants and other civilian trespassers. Three 'illegal aliens' were detained by troops in the New Mexico area near Santa Teresa on June 3, before being handed to U.S. Border Patrol, Army spokesperson Major Geoffrey Carmichael said in an email. "This marks the first time Department of Defense personnel have recorded a temporary detainment within either National Defense Area," Carmichael said. U.S. presidents have long used active-duty and reservist troops on the international boundary in support roles to U.S. Border Patrol such as surveillance and construction. President Donald Trump took military use a step further by giving troops the right to hold trespassers they catch in the zones until civilian law enforcement assumes custody. Federal troops can also search people and conduct crowd control measures within the areas, according to the Army. Designation of the zones as military bases allowed troops to detain migrants without the need for Trump to invoke the Insurrection Act. The 1807 law lets a U.S. president deploy federal troops domestically to suppress events like civil disorder. Prosecution of dozens of migrants caught in the zones has faced setbacks in court after judges in New Mexico and Texas dismissed trespassing charges, and acquitted a Peruvian woman, ruling they did not know they were entering restricted areas. The primary role of troops in the zones is to detect and track illegal border crossers, with around 390 such detections so far, the Army said. News of the detentions inside military areas came as Trump deployed state-based National Guard troops to Los Angeles during protests over immigration raids.

Two dead after car falls 300ft off cliff at beauty spot

Two people have died after a car plunged 300ft off a cliff at a beauty spot. Police, ambulance crews, firefighters and the Coastguard rushed to the scene at Alum Bay in the Isle of Wight just before 7.30pm on Friday. Hampshire Police said in a statement at the time: 'We're currently at the scene of a serious incident in Totland. 'We were called at 7.21pm this evening after a car, which was being driven along Alum Bay New Road, left the road, came off the cliff top and came to rest in the water below.' Pictures of the aftermath show the grey vehicle submerged in water. A member of the Coastguard can be seen searching the shore around the car, which had its bonnet and roof crumpled. A man was hauled to shore and given CPR. On Sunday, police confirmed to Isle of Wight County Press that both victims have been pronounced dead. A spokesman said: 'Formal identification has yet to take place, but their next of kin have been notified. 'As part of the ongoing investigation into the incident, on behalf of the coroner, officers have been carrying out enquiries at an address on Arctic Road, Cowes.' Detectives were carrying out searches at an address in Cowes earlier on Sunday.
