NCAA's Gavitt: Duke, ACC tell selection committee Flagg will be available for March Madness
Top-ranked Duke and the Atlantic Coast Conference have informed the NCAA Tournament selection committee that freshman Cooper Flagg will be available for March Madness, NCAA senior vice president for basketball Dan Gavitt said Saturday.
Gavitt made the comments on CBS in the lead-up to Sunday's announcement of the field of 68 teams. Flagg sprained his left ankle during Duke's win against Georgia Tech on Thursday in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament quarterfinals.
The 6-foot-9 forward — named the ACC player and newcomer of the year by The Associated Press on Tuesday — missed Friday's semifinal win against rival North Carolina. Afterward, coach Jon Scheyer ruled Flagg out for Saturday night's title game against No. 13 Louisville.
Flagg sat on the bench in black warmups during the UNC game, standing at the back of huddles with injured teammate Maliq Brown (shoulder). Flagg walked with no major limp or protective boot during Friday's game.
Gavitt said Flagg's status isn't the only injury the committee is tracking through the weekend since player availability can play a factor in a team's seeding.

Ohio State ranking in AP poll not as high as Coaches
Just a week after the US LBM preseason Coaches Poll was released, the Associated Press has followed suit. And while Ohio State was behind just one team in the Coaches Poll at No. 2, it appears below another team in the AP. The Texas Longhorns are the No. 1 team in both polls, but instead of OSU at No. 2, it slipped below Penn State to No. 3 in the AP Preseason poll. The Buckeyes did receive 11 first-place votes, but it wasn't quite enough to surpass the Nittany Lions. While Ohio State is the defending College Football Playoff national champion, there are a lot of question marks. OSU will be breaking in a new quarterback, will have to replace two 1,000-yard rushers in the backfield, and must find answers for multiple spots on the defense. Still, the thought is that there is enough talent to reload and absorb the 15 starters now off to the NFL, namely because OSU still has perhaps the two best players in college football with the return of safety Caleb Downs and superstar receiver Jeremiah Smith. But ... time will tell. Behind Ohio State and rounding out the top ten in the preseason AP Poll are Clemson (4), Georgia (5), Notre Dame (6), Oregon (7), Alabama (8), LSU (9), and Miami (FL) (10). Texas, Penn State, OSU, Georgia, Notre Dame, and Oregon received at least one first-place vote. As always, preseason rankings mean very little, but it's still interesting to see where the media believes the pecking order is, with Ohio State still thought of very highly. OSU begins the defense of its national championship on Saturday, Aug. 30 vs. Texas in the 'Shoe. MSU basketball listed among top teams in Big Ten in latest preseason rankings

Texas TechCC: @FDSportsBook, @ Michigan State basketball remains just outside of the top 20 in the latest preseason rankings from one of the game's top analysts. Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports has released an updated batch of preseason rankings for the 2025-26 college basketball season, and the Spartans remain listed just outside the top 20. Rothstein has the Spartans at No. 21 in his updated version of the rankings that were released on Tuesday. Among Big Ten teams, the Spartans rank No. 5 in Rothstein's list but there is a notable drop off after the top three. He has Purdue (No. 1), Michigan (No. 5) and UCLA (No. 7) all in the top 10, and then next from the Big Ten is Oregon (No. 20) one spot before the Spartans. Michigan State is the reigning Big Ten champs and went the furthest of any team from the league in the NCAA Tournament by reaching the Elite Eight this past season. However, the Spartans have lost a number of key pieces off that highly-successful team, including leading scorers Jase Richardson and Jaden Akins -- so many like Rothstein anticipate a step back from the Spartans next season. As I've said during most of this offseason, I feel like anywhere from No. 15 to No. 25 is about right for the Spartans in next year's preseason poll. I would be quite surprised if they were any higher than No. 15 and shocked if they were unranked when the official preseason polls drop in a few months. American sprinter Fred Kerley provisionally suspended for anti-doping 'whereabouts failures'
MONACO (AP) — U.S. Olympic sprinter Fred Kerley has been provisionally suspended for 'whereabouts failures' under the sport's anti-doping rules, the Athletics Integrity Unit said Tuesday. Lawyers for the 30-year-old Kerley hit back in a statement posted on the athlete's account on X. 'Fred Kerley has already notified the AIU that he intends to contest the allegation that he has violated the anti-doping rules related to whereabouts failures, as he strongly believes that one of (or) more of his alleged missed tests should be set aside either because he was not negligent or because the Doping Control Officer did not do what was reasonable under the circumstances to locate him at his designated location,' the statement said. It added: 'Fred will not comment further at this time out of respect for the process, and looks forward to presenting his case to the appointed hearing panel.' Kerley won the Olympic silver medal in the 100 meters at the Tokyo Games and the bronze in Paris last year. He has also earned six medals at the track and field world championships. 'You can try to break me in the storm, but all you're doing is giving me a better story at the finish line,' Kerley later posted on the same account. In May, Kerley was charged in Florida with punching a woman, a hurdler who also competed in the Olympics. That came just a few months after he was arrested for allegedly punching a Miami Beach police officer on Jan. 2, an incident in which police used a Taser on him.
