
All-star lineup: Aphelion, a game made in collaboration with the European Space Agency
There's certainly something to this idea of diversification. Since its founding in 2008, the French outfit has made action-adventure games about memory, narrative games involving magical college students, and a role-playing game about a Georgian vampire. Recently, it released Jusant, an ecological sci-fi fable that was also a refreshingly realistic take on rock climbing.
Aphelion, the team's latest, does have a little in common with Jusant, at least. It is another science-fiction game, but one with a glitteringly hard edge. It's based around a mission to the edge of the solar system where an icy world called Persephone has been discovered. Somewhat inevitably, the crew crashlands on the planet, and what follows is a journey of exploration, survival and stealth in a harsh alien climate.
It's not hard to look at the trailer with its grappling hook and walls of climbable ice and view this as a spiritual successor to Jusant. This is not the case, according to Weideli. The team working on the new game actually came directly from another project, the episodic supernatural game, Tell Me Why.
The emphasis is different, too. Aphelion's climbing is simpler than Jusant's, which could get very technical in places, and it's not the central preoccupation this time around. Several developers who worked on Jusant have joined the Aphelion team in the last few months, however, and have shared their experiences dealing with rope physics and vertical level design.
The real inspiration for Aphelion largely came from movies such as Interstellar, The Martian, Ad Astra and Arrival. 'We wanted to create a great story-driven game,' says Weideli. 'But we wanted to go within another genre, that led us to a more action-adventure oriented game.'
Intriguingly, everywhere you look in Aphelion there's the presence of real science. Persephone itself is based on Planet Nine, a hypothetical large planet that many astronomers believe orbits the sun far beyond Neptune where it is patiently awaiting discovery.
But Planet Nine is only the starting point for the fiction here. 'Planet Nine was an important source of inspiration,' Weideli says, 'and an interesting scientific grounding for an adventure featuring astronauts who explore a new planet. [But] we then added our own lore, imagination, and most importantly, human drama.'
Aphelion is also pitched as a collaboration with the European Space Agency. 'The ESA team gave us access to space experts and scientists, with whom we could discuss and challenge our ideas about the story of the game,' Weideli says. 'For example, our narrative team could discuss the scientific aspects of a space or extraterrestrial mission, review the vocabulary of a space mission, how astronauts talk to each other during a mission. They also offered to review and give advice regarding the technology.'
The design team won't be playing things entirely straight, however. Alongside exploration and survival, there's that final element: Aphelion is also a stealth game. Weideli isn't ready to talk about it yet, but something has survived out in the ice of Persephone, and it doesn't seem entirely friendly.
Whatever lurking horrors await, it's nice to see Don't Nod back making complex, hard-to-classify video games, after a recent round of redundancies. With so many people working in games at the moment engaged in an awful real-world spin on the survival genre, it's thrilling to see a team still turning to the stars.
Aphelion is released next year on PC, PS5 and Xbox

For the uninitiated, the game - unsurprisingly - lets you become a football manager, taking minnows from the depths of the footballing pyramid to the Premier League and beyond. Details are thin on the ground, but Football Manager 26 will have all of the updated teams from the 2025/26 season in the leagues it covers around the world. The Premier League license is included in the game for the first time, meaning that all 20 of the official teams will be represented, including kits, logos, player photos and more. The game engine is moving to Unity, and delays in this move are why Football Manager 25 was cancelled back in February. The new match engine seems to offer the game's best-ever graphics. As in previous years, it's likely that Sports Interactive will add a handful of new teams, but this has not yet been confirmed. Can I pre-order Football Manager 26? Football Manager 26 is not yet available to pre-order. Availability usually coincides with the annoucment of a release date. Which platforms can I play Football Manager 26 on? Previous Football Manager titles have been playable across PC, Mac, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and mobile. The full, traditional game is usually available on PC and Mac. A console-optimised version is usually available on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, with Touch usually releasing on Nintendo Switch consoles, tablets and mobile. Clara Amfo says depression played a part in Radio 1 exit
Former BBC Radio 1 DJ Clara Amfo has spoken about how depression played a part in her decision to leave the station last has previously spoken about her periods of struggling with her mental health and anxiety, and told Fearne Cotton's Happy Place podcast last week she has "dealt with deep, deep, deep depression in my life".She told her former Radio 1 colleague she decided to leave the station partly because she felt "completely satiated" by the job and didn't want it to become "a chore".But she went on to say she was suffering from depression in 2023 and took a break "to have a little reset", before deciding to leave for good. Amfo joined Radio 1 in 2015 and took over Cotton's mid-morning slot the same year, before moving to Annie Mac's evening show in 2021. Amfo left the station in March 2024. Burnt out She told Cotton her depression had become particularly bad at the start of 2023."Mate, I was in the flipping trenches," she said. "I think I was burnt out, I wasn't taking care of myself properly, I think I was a bit sort of overwhelmed by life's weird - not weird, valid - injustices."I just wasn't feeling great and I was in a bit of a negative headspace, and yeah I was really, really depressed mid-2023, and I took some time off of radio, and just had to have a little reset. And that's when I decided I was going to leave my show, actually, at the time."Cotton, who has previously said she left Radio 1 because the job was "ruining her mind", told Amfo she had also experienced "very, very low mental health in periods".Amfo also spoke about other factors behind her departure from Radio 1 earlier in the interview, saying she was determined not "to resent anything that that I do" in her job."I don't ever want anything to feel like it's being forced or like it's a chore. And I wasn't feeling that way, but I want to be able to listen to music as a fan always, rather than as a business," she explained."I want to be able to talk to people on a human level, rather than thinking, I've got to get that viral interview clip."She quoted a comment that Annie Mac told her when she left. "She was just like, 'Yeah babe, I'm just ready to do my next thing'."And I think that's how I felt. I felt so completely satiated by it and I was like, well, I think there's nothing new for me to do. Wayne and Gary Lineker have finally put their differences aside after a 17-year feud. The brothers were reunited over the weekend as they attended the wedding of Wayne's daughter Tia in Mallorca. Tia shared the first glimpse of her lavish wedding on Instagram on Wednesday as she tied the knot with husband Harry Agombar. Now Wayne has publicly declared his love for his brother, taking to Instagram on Thursday to share a snap of the pair embracing. Wayne captioned the picture: 'Great to see my bro and my nephews at my daughters wedding #reunited #happy #family.' He also shared a sweet family snap with Gary and the crisp connoisseur's sons George, Harry, Tobias, and Angus.
