Merz calls on Netanyahu to provide aid to Gaza's ‘starving' civilians
Chancellor Friedrich Merz 'expressed his deep concern about the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza,' said a government statement.
'He called on Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu to do everything in his power to achieve an immediate ceasefire. He urged him to provide the starving civilian population in Gaza with urgently needed humanitarian aid now. This aid must reach the civilian population quickly, safely, and in the required quantities.'
Faced with mounting international pressure, Israel on Sunday declared a 'tactical pause' in fighting in parts of Gaza and said it would allow the UN and aid agencies to open secure land routes into the war-ravaged territory.
On Wednesday more than 100 aid agencies and right organizations warned that 'mass starvation' was spreading in Gaza.

A Syrian man who allegedly supports ISIS has been charged with attempted murder over the stabbing of a Spanish tourist at Berlin's Holocaust Memorial, prosecutors said Tuesday. The suspect, a refugee partially identified as Wassim Al M., is said to have seriously injured the 30-year-old man at the landmark in the German capital in February. The tourist, from the Basque Country in northern Spain, was wounded in the neck during the attack at Berlin's Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, a somber grid of concrete steles located near the Brandenburg Gate and the US embassy. The suspect, who was arrested shortly after the attack and is in pre-trial detention, has also been charged with causing serious bodily harm and attempted membership of a foreign terrorist organization. Officials said previously he had arrived in Germany in 2023. The attack was one of several which shocked Germany ahead of the general election, which saw a doubling in the vote-share for the far-right, anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD). The election was won by the center-right CDU/CSU, which has since taken power at the head of a coalition and moved swiftly to introduce stricter curbs on immigration. The new government under Chancellor Friedrich Merz has signaled it is trying to resume deportations to Syria, which have been suspended since 2012.

Hamas says delegation leaving Doha after Gaza ceasefire talks breakdown
GAZA CITY: Hamas's negotiating team left the Qatari capital Doha for Turkiye on Tuesday to discuss the 'latest developments' in the stalled Gaza ceasefire talks, a Hamas official told AFP. 'A high-level leadership delegation from Hamas, headed by Mohammed Darwish, president of the movement's leadership council, and including the negotiation team and its head, Khalil Al-Hayya, is departing Doha heading to Istanbul,' the source told AFP. 'The delegation will hold several meetings with Turkish officials regarding the latest developments in the ceasefire negotiations, which stalled last week,' the source added. For over two weeks, mediators in Qatar had been shuttling between Israeli and Hamas delegations in a bid to secure a breakthrough in indirect talks for a ceasefire and the release of hostages held in Gaza, nearly two years into the war. The United States joined Israel last week in pulling its negotiators from the negotiations, with US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff blaming the Palestinian militant group for the failure to reach a deal and saying Washington would 'consider alternative options.' Germany's Merz says Gaza aid airdrops could start as soon as Wednesday
BERLIN: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that two of the country's aircraft could fly aid airdrop missions from Jordan to Gaza as soon as Wednesday, calling the help a small but important signal. 'This work may only make a small contribution to humanitarian aid, but it sends an important signal: We are here, we are in the region,' said Merz at a press conference alongside Jordan's King Abdullah in Berlin. Two A400M aircraft were on their way to Jordan at the moment, where they would refuel and then fly their aid mission at the weekend at the latest, in coordination with France and Germany, said Merz. Merz also welcomed initial steps taken by Israel to allow in aid but said more must follow.
