Nigeria: Bauchi, Toro LGA launches empowerment programme, distributes $31,158
The people of Toro LGA in Bauchi State have benefitted from various empowerment items worth ₦50 million through the Dembo Economic Empowerment Programme (DEEP), initiated by the Executive Chairperson of the Council, Pharm Abubakar Dembo.
The items were distributed to selected beneficiaries during the official launch of the programme by the Chairperson, held in Toro, the headquarters of the LGA, on Saturday.
While launching the programme, Abubakar Dembo said, 'I am pleased to inform the good people of Toro Local Government Area that we have officially launched the first phase of the Dembo Economic Empowerment Programme (DEEP).'
Speaking further, he said, 'The programme includes the distribution of equipment and financial support amounting to approximately ₦50,000,000.'
He explained, 'This initiative is part of our administration's plan to boost economic development within the community, particularly among youths and women, with the aim of reducing unemployment and encouraging self-reliance.'
The Council Boss stressed, 'The purpose of the programme is to create meaningful change in the lives of our people by providing them with the tools and financial support needed to become productive members of society.'
While announcing the items, he disclosed, 'In this phase, the following items and financial support were distributed: 26 motorcycles, 26 grinding machines, 30 noodle (spaghetti) making machines, 20 sewing machines, 1 volcanic machine, ₦300,000 cash support to 5 individuals, and ₦200,000 cash support to 1 individual.'
'I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed (Kauran Bauchi), for his leadership, guidance, and unwavering support to my administration and the Toro Local Government as a whole,' he added.
Abubakar Dembo further stated, 'I also extend my gratitude to the members of the Local Government Council, traditional and religious leaders, and all stakeholders for their continued cooperation and support for this administration.'
He assured, 'This programme will not stop here. It will continue in batches to increase the number of beneficiaries across various parts of the Local Government Area. This is in line with our commitment to inclusive grassroots development.'
He also said, 'I reaffirm that the PDP-led government remains committed to protecting the dignity of our people and improving the economy.'
The Council Boss concluded, 'We hope this programme will bring about a significant positive transformation in the lives of our citizens while promoting peace and sustainable development in Toro Local Government. #GreaterToro #GreaterBauchi Insha Allah.'
Some of the beneficiaries commended the initiative, expressing hope that it will go a long way in reducing unemployment among youths and women, as well as promoting job opportunities.

Israel has sold a record amount of debt in the US since its war on Gaza erupted on 7 October 2023, according to a report by Bloomberg on Friday. The government of Israel's US-based bond broker, Israel Bonds, says it has sold $5bn worth of debt in the last twenty months. The level of bond issuance is more than double that raised by Israel Bonds, in similar time periods previously. Israel's war on Gaza started after the 7 October 2023 Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel killed around 1,200 people. Israel responded by pummelling the Gaza Strip and invading it. More than 54,000 people, mainly women and children, have been killed in the Israeli attacks, and the population is facing "imminent famine", the United Nations says. Israel Bonds is affiliated with Israel's finance ministry and sells bonds inside the US to both retail and institutional investors. The starting price for non-tradable retail Israeli bonds is as low as $36. A five-year Israeli bond has a yield between 4.86 percent and 5.44 percent, according to the Bloomberg report. Meanwhile, public opinion on Israel has turned sharply negative from France to Japan. However, in March 2024, Israel saw strong demand for its debt among international investors. It sold $8bn in international bonds. Israel enjoys investment-grade ratings from major credit ratings agencies.

US to investigate army vehicle displaying word ‘kafir' in northeast Syria
The US-led coalition in Syria has launched a formal investigation after 'unapproved symbols or language' were observed on a US military vehicle in northeast Syria, the coalition said in a statement to Middle East Eye on Friday. On Thursday, MEE reported that a US military vehicle patrolling near the city of Hasakah last weekend displayed the word "kafir" - infidel in Arabic - on its front next to a Christian cross. The term "kafir" gained global notoriety during the Syrian war, frequently used by the Islamic State (IS) and other extremist groups to justify violence against those deemed non-believers - including Muslims who did not share their ideology. Local residents described the graffiti as "offensive" and a 'provocation', particularly as IS no longer has a presence in the region. "Markings of this nature violate U.S. Department of Defense policy," the Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR) said in a written statement. There are currently an estimated 2,000 American troops in Syria, with the number expected to be halved in the coming months.

Israeli military recovers bodies of two hostages held by Hamas
Israel's military recovered the bodies of two hostages, Judi Weinstein-Haggai and Gad Haggai, who were held by Hamas, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday. The Israeli army said in a statement that the bodies of the husband and wife were recovered in a special operation from Khan Younis area in the Gaza Strip. Following the recovery of two bodies, 56 hostages are still held by Hamas, with fewer than half believed to be alive, according to Israeli estimates. Israel launched its military campaign in Gaza following the October 7, 2023 assault in which Hamas-led gunmen killed 1,200 people and took 251 hostages, by Israeli tallies. In the subsequent fighting, more than 54,000 Palestinians have been killed, local health authorities say.
