Despite geopolitical tensions, India's port sector expected to grow faster than major economies: Report
The growth is being driven by rising domestic consumption, increasing trade volumes, and strong government-led infrastructure projects.
It stated, "we believe, despite ongoing geopolitical tensions and global uncertainty, India's ports sector is expected to grow faster than other major economies, driven by an increase in consumption and government-led projects".
The report stated that ports and economic growth in India go hand in hand. The government's push to make India a global manufacturing hub, along with efforts to boost exports, is expected to fuel the growth of ports and the overall logistics sector.
As per report, cargo volumes at Indian ports grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.2 per cent over FY02 to FY25.
This growth was led by non-major ports, where volumes rose at a higher CAGR of 9.1 per cent, compared to a 4.7 per cent CAGR growth at major ports. The demand for port infrastructure remains strong due to increasing trade and infrastructure development in the country.
India currently has 12 major seaports and over 200 non-major ports, with a combined capacity of approximately 2,700 million metric tonnes (mmt). Major ports fall under the jurisdiction of the central government, while non-major ports are managed by state governments.
The country has set an ambitious target to increase total port capacity to 10,000 mmt by the year 2047.
The report highlighted several factors that are expected to drive this growth, including the rising aspirations of India's young population, the government's strong infrastructure focus through programs like Sagarmala and PM Gati Shakti, the increase in industrial and manufacturing activity, growing containerization, and a shift toward multimodal logistics. In addition, private sector participation in port development is also rising.
The report also mentioned that the ports sector is undergoing a structural transformation. Capacity expansion, use of technology to reduce turnaround time, better loading and unloading standards, and improved connectivity are all contributing to making Indian ports more efficient and capable of handling future trade volumes.

The official visit reflected the mutual desire of Oman and Mongolia to build a diverse and sustainable strategic partnership. Philippine President Marcos arrives on 5-day state visit to India
New Delhi: Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr arrived in the national capital on Monday for a five-day state visit to India, aimed at further strengthening the India-Philippines relationship, the Ministry of External Affairs stated. This is the first visit by the President of the Southeast Asian country to India since he assumed office back in 2022, marking a significant milestone, as his visit aligns with the celebration of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations. According to a post on X by the MEA, Marcos was welcomed with a warm reception by the Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita. "Mabuhay, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.! President Bongbong Marcos has arrived in New Delhi on his first State Visit to India. Received by MoS Pabitra Margherita and accorded a warm welcome. India & the Philippines are celebrating 75th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic ties. This visit will lead to further strengthening of India-Philippines relations," the MEA stated on X. He was accompanied by First Lady Louise Araneta Marcos and a high-level delegation including several Ministers from his Cabinet. According to a statement by the MEA, during his visit, President Marcos will be holding talks with President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with other officials. He will also be meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. On August 5, he will lay a wreath at Rajghat, and following that, he will hold talks with PM Modi at the Hyderabad House. Exchange of Memoranda of Understanding and Press Statements will take place thereafter. The Philippine President will then meet Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare JP Nadda and thereafter President Droupadi Murmu. Diplomatic relations between India and the Philippines were established in November 1949. Both countries have since developed a strong partnership across a broad spectrum of areas, including trade and investment, defence and security, maritime cooperation, agriculture, healthcare, pharmaceuticals and digital technologies. The two countries also engage closely at the regional level, including through India's Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with ASEAN. The statement added that India's relations with the Philippines are an integral pillar of our 'Act East' Policy, Vision MAHASAGAR and our vision of the Indo-Pacific. South China Sea: India, Philippines hold first joint patrol
India and the Philippines conducted their first joint naval exercises in the disputed South China Sea, the Filipino military said Monday. The naval exercises come as the Philippines' President Ferdinand Marcos departed for a state visit to New Delhi on Monday, where he is expected to hold talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. What we know about the joint Indian-Filipino patrols in the South China Sea Before departing for his five-day trip to India, Marcos praised the two countries' "steadfastness in upholding international maritime law, including the UNCLOS", the UN treaty granting an exclusive economic zone within 200 nautical miles (370 kilometres) of a country's shores. The two-day exercises started on Sunday and include three Indian vessels. India's naval vessels, including the guided missile destroyer INS Delhi, arrived in Manila for a port visit late last week. The Philippines deployed two frigates. The patrol "started yesterday afternoon, then it's ongoing up to this moment... the activity at the moment is replenishment at sea," Lieutenant Colonel John Paul Salgado told news agency Agence France Press. How did China respond to the joint naval patrols? The cooperation between India and Philippines is likely to upset China, which claims the South China Sea in its entirety. Answering a question about China's retaliatory move to the naval exercises, Armed Forces of the Philippines chief of staff Romeo Brawner said without elaborating that "we did not experience any untoward incident but we were still shadowed. We expected that already." Brawner said the naval patrols had been successful so far and expressed hopes that Filipino forces could engage India's military in more joint maneuvers in the future. The Philippines has actively increased its military cooperation with several allies in the last after a series of clashes in the disputed areas with China. China has made claims over large parts of the South China Sea, including maritime zones claimed by the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. Some $3 trillion-worth (€2.6 trillion) of goods are shipped through the strategically important region annually. China also has a longstanding border dispute with India in the Himalayas. Last week, China called Manila a "troublemaker" that has aligned itself with foreign forces to stir up trouble in what China deems its own territorial waters.
