Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors
The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a smash hit when it was released in 2023, with the film quickly becoming the highest grossing video game film adaptation and the first ever film based on a video game to bring in over $1 billion at the box office. The movie ended on a tease for a sequel, which was subsequently confirmed by Nintendo and Universal to be in production in 2024 — and now we finally know its name.
In a corporate press release revealing its slate of content for 2025, NBCUniversal revealed that a host of future movies would be coming to its streaming service Peacock immediately after their theatrical release. Among them were films including Megan 2.0, How to Train Your Dragon, and Bad Guys 2, but a few others were seemingly left in by mistake, including one big one.

What is the Mario Movie Sequel Called?
According to the press release – which has since been edited to remove mention of Mario and a few other films – the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be titled "Super Mario World":
An exciting range of films from Universal Pictures, Focus Features, DreamWorks Animation and Illumination were presented, including Megan 2.0, Nobody 2, Bad Guys 2, How to Train Your Dragon, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, Black Phone 2, HIM, The Phoenician Scheme, Super Mario World, Shrek, and Minions.
The name is an homage to the fourth mainline Super Mario Bros. game, also called Super Mario World, which was released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990 in Japan and 1991 in the US. The game is considered one of the greatest video games ever made, and is remembered fondly by fans to this day.
Super Mario World ties in to the tease at the end of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, too — the game was the first to feature Mario's trusty steed, a dinosaur named Yoshi, who hatches from an egg in the game. The same egg was seen in the post-credits scene in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, leading many to believe that the film's sequel would heavily feature the dinosaur companion.
Super Mario World Release Date
Nintendo and Universal revealed in a Mario Day stream in 2024 that Super Mario World would be released on April 3, 2026 in the US and in most countries globally, with a few additional territories getting the film later in April and May.
Like The Super Mario Bros. Movie before it, Super Mario World will be animated by Minions studio Illumination and produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and Nintendo representative director Shigeru Miyamoto. The film will be directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, and written by Matthew Fogel, all of whom held similar positions in the production of the first film.
The news comes after Nintendo revealed the release date for its live-action The Legend of Zelda movie, which is currently in production under Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment, with each financing 50% of the production. No cast has been announced for the film, but Spider-Man veteran Avi Arad will be acting as producer alongside Miyamoto-san, and Maze Runner director Wes Ball will be directing the film.

CostCo is the latest US retailer to confirm Nintendo Switch 2 stock
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. A Nintendo Switch 2 bundle listing has appeared on the CostCo website It's the Mario Kart World bundle, with 12 months of Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription time No price as of yet, but we expect it to be around $549.99 I've got some potentially great news if you're a CostCo member and still on the hunt for a Nintendo Switch 2, as the retailer is expected to have launch day (June 5) stock. The US retail giant now has a Nintendo Switch 2 bundle listed on its website. It includes the console itself, a digital copy of Mario Kart World, and a 12-month Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription. Stock could obviously vary depending on your location, but the webpage states that the Switch 2 "is expected to be in stock and available for purchase soon" and urges shoppers to "check back again later." There is, however, still no sign that Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders will be available at CostCo. Furthermore, the retailer is limiting purchases to one unit every seven days. But after a week, it's realistic to expect Switch 2 stock to sell through entirely at CostCo given how difficult it has been to already secure a pre-order. As for price, CostCo hasn't disclosed this quite yet. But if I had to guess, given the addition of a 12-month NSO + Expansion Pack membership on top of the $499.99 Mario Kart World bundle, I'd expect this bundle to go on sale for around $549.99. Likely not the most affordable bundle out there, then, but certainly one worth considering if you'd like a Switch 2 console on day one, and are running out of options elsewhere. Nintendo has updated its Switch 2 game compatibility page, identifying over 100 titles with 'start up issues' on the upcoming console Check your Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order ASAP, as some retailers are reportedly cancelling them PowerA reveals new line of Nintendo Switch 2 accessories including a wired controller with Hall effect thumbsticks

Nintendo has updated its Switch 2 game compatibility page, identifying over 100 titles with 'start up issues' on the upcoming console
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Nintendo's list of compatible Switch games for Switch 2 has been updated The company has identified well over 100 games with start-up issues The vast majority should still work without issue on the new system The list of Nintendo Switch 2 games that could have compatibility issues at launch has been updated by the company. Nintendo's compatibility page has links to three PDFs. These highlight 115 games "with start up issues on Nintendo Switch 2," 46 games that successfully start up but may have some compatibility issues, and finally 49 games that have issues "planned to be addressed at launch or shortly after." Furthermore, Nintendo has highlighted software that outright cannot be used on Nintendo Switch 2. These include Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit, as well as video apps including Crunchyroll, Niconico, Abema, and Hulu. The comics and manga app InkyPen will also be unusable. It remains to be seen if these apps will receive dedicated Switch 2 versions in the future. Lastly, a bunch of original Nintendo Switch games will require the use of that console's Joy-Con controllers, and presumably won't be compatible with the Joy-Con 2. These are as follows: Ring Fit Adventure 1-2 Switch Everybody 1-2 Switch! Game Builder Garage Nintendo Switch Sports WarioWare: Move It! Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 01: Variety Kit Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 02: Robot Kit Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 03: Vehicle Kit So far, Nintendo has tested well over 15,000 Nintendo Switch games for Nintendo Switch 2. The vast majority, around 99% of Nintendo games and 65% of third-party games, have no compatibility issues. For everything else, the issues are at least being investigated by Nintendo, and it should be fair to expect most Switch 1 games to work just fine on Switch 2 by the end of 2025. Check your Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order ASAP, as some retailers are reportedly cancelling them PowerA reveals new line of Nintendo Switch 2 accessories including a wired controller with Hall effect thumbsticks The Nintendo Switch 2 has been spotted at retailers ahead of its June release - but the reported stock numbers aren't huge

Hunter Schafer Urged to Play Princess Zelda in New Movie
Some fans have a clear idea of who they want to play Zelda in the upcoming movie based on the video game, The Legend of Zelda. There's no question that Hunter Schafer, who has starred in HBO's Euphoria, resembles the videogame character. Nintendo announced the live-action Zelda movie in 2023. "The film will be produced by Shigeru Miyamoto, Representative Director and Fellow of Nintendo and Avi Arad, Chairman of Arad Productions Inc., who has produced many mega hit films," Nintendo wrote then. Some fans are hoping that the Internet buzz that Schafer might be cast as Zelda is true. "Hunter Schafer as Princess Zelda is THE vision," a fan wrote on X. "She's a great actress, too. I'd be so down to see her in the role," another fan wrote. "She's perfect, though! She was born for this role!" wrote another person. The latest buzz came after an X influencer named Daniel Richtman tipped that Schafer might actually be tapped to play the Zelda role, but fans are debating whether they believe it. "IG RPK EXCLUSIVE SCOOP," Richtman's subscriber-only post on X started on May 29. Schafer is "being eyed for the role of Zelda in the live-action Legend of Zelda movie," CBR reported, citing Richtman's locked-down "scoop." This is "in part because of her physical resemblance to the iconic video game princess, CBR reported. A Reddit thread emerged to discuss Richtman's post, with the poster declaring the news "very exciting if true." Another wrote that "she genuinely looks like Zelda." However, others cast doubt on the reliability of the tip. Richtman has been debated on Reddit before, with some calling him an "extremely reliable trailer leaker." His post has people buzzing, though, about the possibility of Schafer playing Zelda, which some fans have been urging for a while. According to The Pink News, the live-action film "will be inspired by one of the most beloved franchises in the gaming world." Schafer stars as Jules Vaughn on Euphoria and also appeared in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, as well as Cuckoo, according to IMDB. The film "will be produced by Nintendo and Arad Productions Inc., and directed by Wes Ball. The film will be co-financed by Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc., with more than 50% financed by Nintendo. The theatrical distribution of the film will be done worldwide by Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc.," according to Nintendo. "By producing visual contents of Nintendo IP by itself, Nintendo is creating new opportunities to have people from around the world to access the world of entertainment which Nintendo has built, through different means apart from its dedicated game consoles," the company Schafer Urged to Play Princess Zelda in New Movie first appeared on Men's Journal on May 30, 2025
